Electric typewriter. The object of the present invention is an electric typewriter with a character roller. This machine is characterized in that the character roll is mounted rotativemnent on the frame of a main electromagnet serving to launch this roll against the paper roll, each time a print is to be made, the character roller being mechanically connected to the frame by a device tending to set it in rotation when it is launched towards the paper,
its rotation then being limited by the reinforcement of one or the other of several secondary electromagnets arranged in a row surrounding the axis of this roller, caused to form an obstacle in the path of a part driven by the roller.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view of the middle part of the machine; FIG 2 is a section on II-II dle of FIG. 1; fig. 3 8 shows a detail in section along III-III of FIG. 1; Fig. 4 is the electrical diagram, and FIG. 5 is a schematic plan view of the whole machine.
On the machine frame, formed by a base 1. of insulating material. Keys 2 are mounted, each integral with an elastic contact blade 3 capable of coming into contact with a fixed blade 4. In a recess of the base 1 is housed a main electromagnet whose coil 5 surrounds an iron core 6. The latter forms part of a frame comprising, in addition, a non-magnetic rod 7 and a plate 8 guided by rollers 9 in two grooves 10 made in the walls of an opening 11 of the base. On this plate is rotatably mounted the character carrier roller 12 integral with the shaft 13. On this shaft are fixed a lever 14 and a pulley 15. A rope 16 is wound around this.
last and connected to the base by means of a spring 17. The plate 8 carries a series of secondary electromagnets arranged in a row surrounding the axis of the roller 12. These electromagnets each comprise a coil 18 and a armature composed of a magnetic part 19 and a non-magnetic part 20. When one of the coils 18 is energized, its iron core 19 is attracted and causes the non-magnetic part 20 to emerge from the plate 8, which forms an obstacle in the path of the lever 14. A part 21 fixed to the plate 8 can come into contact with the arm <B> 22 </B> of an elbow lever whose other arm 23 carries a pawl 24 in engagement with a rack 25 integral with the carriage 26 of the machine.
This is biased to the right by a spring barrel 27 and a rope 28 winding around the barrel; it is retained by a pawl 29 mounted on the base; the two pawls 24 and 29 can be disengaged by means of a rod 31 articulated, at 30, to the base and abutting against two pins 32 which are carried by the pawls 24 and 29. The displacement of the rod is caused by the tou che 33 acting on a rope 34 by means of an angled lever, not shown.
35 and 36 are rowing return springs in the rest position, one the main frame and the other the character roller.
Fig. 4 shows the electrical connections. From the positive pole of the source, the current arrives at the blades 3 via an adjustment resistor 51 and, when one of the keys 2 has closed its contact, travels through the coil 18 of the corresponding secondary electromagnet to arrive at the coil 5 of the main electromagnet connected to the negative pole of the source. The contact of a key 37 intended to cause the movement of the carriage 26 from right to left without printing a letter, can connect the positive pole of the source to one of the ends of the coil 5, without the intermediary of one of the coils 18.
The operation of the machine is as follows: When the key corresponding to the letter e is pressed, for example, the current flows through one of the coils 18 and the main coil 5; the core 6 is therefore attracted by this reel and causes the frame and the roller 12 to advance towards the paper holder roll 38; the roller 12 is rotated clockwise by the cord 16, but stops as soon as the lever 14 has reached the ar mature of that of the electromagnets which corresponds to the letter e . Thanks to the spring 17, the armature of the main electromagnet can continue its course and the character e which now is in front of the paper holder roll will be printed.
At the same time, the part 21 moves the elbow lever 22, 23, and advances by one tooth, through the click 24, the rack 25 and, consequently, the carriage 26. As soon as one lets go the key, the current supplying coils 5 and 18 is interrupted; the armature of the main electromagnet moves back, thanks to the spring 36, and assumes its original position. The character-carrying roller 12, urged by the spring 35, also turns over. The pawl 24 is brought back from left to right, but the carriage 26 is held against its spring by the pawl 29 which has come in. taken with the next tooth of the rack.
The carriage 26 automatically returns to the line start position when the two pawls 24 and 29 are released by actuating the key 33.
The ink used for printing can be delivered either by an ink ribbon, as in most typewriters, or as shown, by a roll of felt 50 impregnated with ink and in contact with the carrier roller. -characters 12. In the latter case, a sector of the roller 12 will be. characterless, so that there are no characters that are printed without touching the ink roller 50.
In the machine shown, the roller 12 comprises two rows of characters, one 39, -presenting lowercase letters, the other 40 -investigating capital letters. Fig. 4 shows the position of the roll 12, where the lower case letters are opposite the paper holder roll. The machine is therefore ready to print lowercase letters. The roll 12 must be lifted by a space corresponding to the distance between the two rows 39 and 40 to prepare the printing of the caps. This is done by acting on the lever by a key 42 connected to this lever by a mechanism similar to that of the key 33 and comprising a string 43.
The lever 41. is integral with an axis 44 and a pure board 45 which can slide the lower end of the shaft 13. By acting on the key 42, a lever is actuated, not shown and which, for its part , tightens the rope 43 and turns the lever 41. Therefore, the board 45 goes up and lifts the shaft 13 and the roller 12.
Of course, instead of this mechanism, a device could be applied which would raise and lower either the entire main frame and the reel 5, or the paper holder roll, mechanisms of this kind being known for the usual machines.
A contact 46 (FIG. 4) actuated by the movement of the carriage and mounted in series with a small lamp 47 can be provided to announce that a line will soon be finished.
The rotation of the paper holder roll can be produced electrically by an electromagnet 48 controlled by a key 49 and actuating this roll by means of a ratchet lever.
Resistor 51 makes it possible to adjust the intensity of the current and, therefore, the force by which the roller 12 is launched towards the paper. Will vary this force according to the number of copies to be printed.
The machine can be powered by direct or alternating current.
Several machines can be put in parallel by means of a multiple cable, to control all these machines at the same time and thus print a large number of copies, for example fifty, in the same period of time that it takes to write a letter . These machines, with the exception of one, may not have a keyboard.
