Electric shorthand machine. The present invention a. for object an electric stenographic machine, characterized by an electromagnet, the armature of which, by moving, causes the launching of the character-carrying bars and the driving of the ink ribbon and of the writing paper.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawing shows, schematically and. by way of example, an embodiment of the machine; Fig. 2 shows details of the machine in section; Fig. 3 refers to a circuit diagram; Fig. 4 shows another detail.
On a base 1 and isolated from it are keys 2 isolated from each other. A rubber roller 3 is mounted on two pivots 10. Characters 4. are mounted on bars 5 with return springs. At opposite ends of the bars. 5 are small solenoids 7. The characters 4 can be launched on the paper 19 (fig. 2) unwinding on the roller 3. A main electromagnet 6 is placed in the base 1. The armature 16 of this electromagnet carries a part 8 of brass which can drive the armatures of the coils 7 and launch the characters 4 on the paper 19, when the current passing through one of the solenoids 7 couples its armature with the part 8.
An ink ribbon 9 is mounted on two reels 11 and 12 and takes place under the influence of a pawl 13 with a lever 14 actuated by the armature of the main electromagnet 6.
A part 15 is integral with the frame 8 which operates the lever 17 actuating a pawl 18 and the paper 19 after each typing of the characters 4. A spring 20 returns the frame 8 to its initial position.
Each time the electric current passes through one of the solenoids 7, the latter advances a driving finger fixed to its frame, in the path of the part 8 so that the corresponding character is launched against the paper 19, when the current passes. in the coil of the main solenoid 6.
The paper 19 unwinds from 21- and winds up on the roller 22, which is actuated by means of a belt or by means of a mechanical transmission (not shown in the drawing). Several characters can be marked on the paper at the same time.
The. Fib. â schematically represents the course of the current in the machine. The current produced by a battery 24 passes through the keys 22, then through contacts 25 and from there into the solenoids 7 to return through the wire 26 to 24. Under the machine is placed a contact 27 which only controls the electricity. tro-magnet 6, this contact. being closed only after the contacts of the coils 7. In this way the electromagnet 6 always acts after the solenoids 7 corresponding to the keys of the machine.
Fig. 4 shows the attachment of a spool 7 to the end of a character bar 5. In spool 7 there is an antagonist spring which pushes the armature out of the. bo bine. The frame carries a rod forming a driving finger, which comes to be placed in front of the part 8 when by the current passing through the. coil 7 the frame is. drawn into the. bo bine.
