Tension control mechanism.
The object of the invention is a tension control mechanism, in which a braking force is applied to a rotary support to control the unwinding of a material which exerts a torque on said support, the latter being mounted so as to be able to move from a position of equilibrium determined by the equality of forces applied in one direction by the material under tension and in the other direction by a deflection load of the support.
The mechanism according to the invention can be used during the handling of any flexible material, such as that carried en masse wound on a rotating support. It can also be employed when such materials, during a manufacturing process, are wrapped around a drum or support for the purpose of controlling their movement from one point to another. Examples of such materials are textiles in the form of yarns, bands, fibers, sheets or the like; flexible metal or metallic material of similar shape, such as foils, tapes, bands, wires or the like; plastics and paper.
When it is desired to adjust the tension of the material during withdrawal, it is customary to apply a braking force to the carrier and adjust the braking force relative to the withdrawal force to produce the desired tension.
The tension control mechanism according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a rotary braking element mechanically connected to the support to receive the torque, at least one braking member intended to cooperate with the rotary braking element under the influence of load means intended to produce a static frictional condition the effect of which is sufficient to normally prevent rotation of the carrier, the mechanical connection between the carrier and the braking member being liable to flex to produce a force intended to control any desired braking force of the braking member on the rotary braking element so that it is proportional to the torque exerted on the support by the tension of the material,
means capable of being adjusted and intended to cause a nitre force to act on the braking member with a movement of variable amplitude on the latter and said means capable of being adjusted being intended to impart a movement to the brake member braking relative to the rotating braking member without changing the applied braking load such that when the tension of the material exceeds a certain limit, the static friction conditions between the braking member and the member are broken and replaced by conditions of dynamic friction, which allows a controlled rotation of the support, said movements of the braking member varying according to the variations in the tension in order to keep the average tension of the material substantially constant.
A particular example of a problem where such a mechanism can be used is the adjustment of the tension of the warp threads of a loom in which these threads are carried on a rotating support, called a beam, and withdrawn by tension during the process. a weaving process, the woven fabric being wound on another roll or drum, which is driven mechanically at a predetermined speed.
Since, in most textiles, the breaking force of the warp threads is substantially constant, it will be seen that if the tension thereof is normally kept near their breaking point, some mechanism must be provided to. counteract any tendency towards variations in tension which might otherwise exceed this breaking force, and the mechanism must be extremely sensitive to the factors causing such variations, in order to compensate for them automatically and instantaneously.
Mechanisms have been developed and are well known to counteract major cyclic variations such as fulling, but there still remains the problem of automatically compensating for variations due to the gradual change in the diameter of the mass of yarns on the beam.
In a loom in which yarn or other material is withdrawn from a drum, beam or other rotating support or feed member and exerts a torque on that member which varies with the effective radius of the applied tension, the mechanism of tension control may include a brake drum or the like, a control link between this supply element and the brake drum or the like, so that the latter is caused to rotate at a speed proportional to that of the 'feed element,
at least one brake member coming into contact with the brake drum or the like under an applied initial load which is sufficient to prevent rotation of this member under conditions of static friction between the contacting brake surfaces, means for adjusting automatically the load applied to the member, or brake members to compensate for the variations in torque acting on the supply element and which are due to variations in the effective radius, in order to maintain an initial static braking effect determined at the 'advance above a predetermined minimum and means controlled as a function of the tension of the material, so that,
on increasing the tension above a determined limit, an intermittent movement of the brake member or members relative to the brake drum or the like takes place in such a way that, while the applied braking load remains unchanged, the static friction in the brake is broken during this relative movement and replaced by kinetic friction, so that, under the effect of the torque acting on the rotating element, the latter can rotate by not of an amplitude determined by the amplitude and or the speed and or the duration of the movement communicated to the organ or brake organs.
In a loom, the brake members are preferably actuated so that under conditions of kinetic friction the beam can rotate by a comparatively small degree, preferably twice per shuttle language. , and under conditions of static friction is caused to stop between each movement. The stops are well defined and take place alternately at or near the threshing and center-back positions of the leaf. The degree of each movement is determined by the state of the chain tension at all times and is automatically increased if the tension increases and decreases if the tension drops.
Preferably, the aforementioned means for adjusting the load applied to the brake member (s) are provided in, or in association with, the control connection between the rotary member and the brake drum or the like, the arrangement being such that the braking load is adjusted according to the torque exerted on the rotating element, for example by means of a tension roller or pulley in contact with a control chain and acting on a support mounted removably for the or the braking members to vary the applied braking load.
The brake member (s) may move relative to the brake drum or the like in a direction transverse to the plane or direction of rotation thereof and may undergo an oscillatory movement, or an intermittent or pulsating movement in one direction. , under the control of means sensitive to variations in tension on the material.
The movement of the brake member (s) relative to the brake drum or the like can be regulated by a feeler lever mechanism actuated by the movement of a support for the rotating member.
The means for effecting the movement of the brake member (s) according to the variations in tension may comprise adjustable loader means, such as a weight, arranged so that the tension produced by the control means can be adjusted and maintained.
According to a preferred embodiment, the brake drum or similar member has an eireonferential groove and a brake member in the form of a friction bar, arranged tangentially to rotate around its axis and arranged to cooperate with the groove.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the mechanism which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an elevation view thereof.
Fig. 2 is a partially cut away side view.
The embodiment of the tension control mechanism shown in the drawing is intended for the warp control of a loom. This tension control mechanism forms an assembly capable of being attached to a loom by brackets or spacers. It comprises a base 1 fixed to a fixed frame 2 extending upwards and which may be part of the loom, a sub-frame 3 pivotally supported on a flexible blade 4 carrying a rotating element, consisting of a beam 5, carried by a tubular shaft 6 provided with a driving crank 6a, the chain A being brought from the beam onto a counter-roller 7.
Tension control means comprise a brake drum 8, circularly grooved, which is mechanically connected to the shaft 6, in order to rotate at a speed directly in proportion to that of the shaft 6, for example by means of 'a chain 9 intended to cooperate with a chain wheel 10 on the shaft 6 and a chain wheel 11 on a shaft carrying the groove brake drum S. A pulley 12 provided with adjustment means 13 is intended to take up the play in the chain.
The brake member 14 in the form of a friction bar is mounted to rotate in a support 15 capable of pivoting at 16, the friction bar being disposed tangentially with respect to the grooved drum 8.
The carrier 15 is loaded by means of an adjustable spring 17 to apply an initial braking load determined in advance.
In order to adjust the initial loading on the brake according to the variations in the diameter of the material on the beam 5, a tension roller 18 is arranged to be in contact with the chain 9, this roller being mounted on a lever 19 pivotally mounted on the support 15 and provided with adjustment means 20 in contact with a stop 21 of the support 15, the arrangement being such that the initial preliminary loading of the brake is adjusted according to the tension in the chain 9, which. in turn, depends on the torque exerted on the shaft 6 resulting from the tension in the warp threads A and the radius of the warp on the beam 5 from its axis, at any time. Thus, as the diameter of the chain on the beam decreases, the load on the brake proportionally decreases.
The initial pre-loading of the brake is such that, under conditions of static friction between the friction bar 14 and the brake drum 8, the braking force is maintained above a sufficient pre-determined minimum. to retain the beam 5 against a rotation. If the friction bar is rotated in order to move relative to the brake drum 8 in a direction transverse to its plane so as not to change the brake load, the static friction conditions will be broken and replaced by kinetic friction which in reducing the braking effect, thus allowing the rotation of the beam 5.
In order to compensate for the variations in the tension of the chain A, means controlled by such variations are intended to produce the movement of the friction bar 14 relative to the brake drum 8 in steps, of which the speed and or the amplitude and or the duration varies according to the variations of the tension of the chain.
For this purpose, the friction bar 14 is provided at one end with a lever arm 22 extending laterally from. thereof, and at its outer end, this lever arm 22 is connected by a suitable universal connection to a connecting rod 23, which, at its lower end, is provided with a pin 24 extending in a opening extended in a lever 25 of triangular shape, this pin 24 penetrating into the interior triangular space of the lever 25 when empty.
The lever 25 is mounted on a counter-shaft 26 which is made to oscillate at a certain frequency coming from a part of the loom, such as a clapper sword, by means of a connecting rod 27 capable of to pivot on an arm 28 fixed to the counter-shaft 26 ,. and thus intermittent oscillatory movements will be imparted to the friction bar 14, the amplitude of such movements depending on the distance of the stud 24 from the axis of the countershaft 26.
The variation in the amplitude of the movements communicated to the friction bar 14 as a function of variations in tension in the chain A is obtained by connecting the lower end of the connecting rod 23 by means of a rod 29 at the end bottom of a feeler lever 30 which is pivotally mounted at 31 and is provided with a roller 32 intended to come into contact with an adjacent face of the pivoting frame 3. The lever 30 is provided with an arm 30a which carries a poicls 33 adjustable along the arm 30a. The tension to be maintained in the chain is determined by the position and size of the weight 33 on the arm 30a.
If the weight on the arm 30a acting by the roller 32 against the subframe 3 is not released by an opposite bore exerted on the subframe 3 by the tension in the chain A, the lower end of the lever feeler 30 will be disposed in a position in which the stud 24 on the connecting rod 23 connected to the lever 30 by the rod 29 will be disposed at such a distance from the axis of the countershaft 26 that the empty displacement between the stud 24 and the interior triangular formation of lever 25 is such that no movement is imparted to friction bar 14.
As the tension in chain A increases, the subframe 3 will move towards the fixed frame 2 and by exerting pressure on the roller 32 will cause the feeler lever 30 to rotate clockwise, so that the stud 24 will be moved towards the free end of the lever 25 and, depending on the degree of such displacement, the stud 24 will be engaged by the lever 25 to transmit oscillatory movements to the friction bar 14, l 'amplitude of such movements depending on the distance of the stud 24 from the axis of the countershaft 26.
Thus, the greater the increase in tension in the chain A, the greater will be the amplitude of the movements of the friction bar 14 and vice versa. As already mentioned, the movement of the friction bar 14 relative to the brake drum 8 breaks the static friction, and the resulting reduction in the frictional effect allows a controlled release of the beam 5 in small steps. which takes place twice per language of the shuttle with a defined stop between each movement, the stops being well defined and taking place alternately near the threshing and center-back positions of the leaf.
The degree of each movement is determined by the chain tension at that time, automatically increasing if the tension increases and decreasing if the tension drops.
In order to compensate for the cyclical variations in the tension of the chain, the feeler lever assembly is mounted as follows: The pivot 31 of the lever 30 is carried by an elbow lever 34, capable of pivoting at 35 to a console e 2a mounted on the frame 2. An arm extending horizontally from the lever 34 is connected by means of a rod 36 to a groove lever 37 rigidly mounted on the countershaft 26, the connection of the rod 36 to the lever 37 being adjustable as regards its distance from the axis of the countershaft 26.
This mounting of the feeler lever assembly ensures a reciprocating movement cl-Li sub-frame 3 in synchronism with the loom, which compensates for the main cyclical variations in tension, will not reduce the pressure exerted. by the subframe 3 on the roller 32 under the effect of the tension in Ja chain A and thus will not interfere with the automatic maintenance of the constant mean tension already described.
In order to counteract any tendency for irregular operation of the feeler lever 30, this lever 30 is provided with an arm 43, the outer end of which is pivotally connected to a falling rod 44 ,. the lower end of which is connected by a connecting rod 45 to a lug 47 on the upper part of the lever 25. The falling rod 44 is provided, at its lower end, with a damping plate 46 disposed between fixed plates 48 with the interposition of friction pads 49 loaded by an adjustable spring 50.
This damping mechanism also serves to prevent any sustained reactionary stress on the chain when the loom is stopped.
The movement of the subframe 3 in the counterclockwise direction is limited by means of a stop 51 on a fixed frame part 52. An extension 15a on the support 15 is intended to be actuated manually to release the brake if desired, while, to rotate beam 5 to adjust or initially adjust the chain: 1, a hand wheel 38 is mounted on a shaft 39 having at its lower end an angle pinion 40, which, by an axial displacement of the shaft 39 against the action of a spring 42, is capable of being brought into engagement with an angle wheel 41 integral with the brake drum 8.
The purpose of the variable pre-loading of the brake under the effect of the tension roller 18 is to maintain the initial static friction of the brake in a range of values for which the control by kinetic braking makes it possible entirely to maintain a tension determined in advance.
It is understood that the tension control mechanism described is capable of being applied to machines other than weaving looms, the rotary element with which the tension control mechanism is intended to cooperate may comprise a drum. feeder or a roll around which the material is wound passing from one point to another, or in which the material is kept in frictional contact by means such as a nip roll, and in these arrangements there is no There is no need for variable pre-loading of the brake for any given voltage.
A variable pre-loading of the brake according to the variations in the diameter of the material on the beam or other rotating element can be carried out in any other suitable manner. In addition, the brake may be of any other suitable construction provided with one or more brake members cooperating with a friction drum or similar member and movable relative thereto, so as not to influence the applied braking load. . Furthermore, instead of operating the friction bar with an oscillatory movement, this bar can be moved stepwise in one direction, for example by means of a ratchet wheel and single or double action pawls. Two or more assemblies controlling the chains under different tensions can be used in combination.
