Figs. 7, 8 and 9 finally, are detail views partly in elevation and partly in vertical section illustrating the transfer of a molded part from a mold to a case at the transfer station of the machine, these detail views also showing the construction of the transfer device and intermediate alignment.
We see, in fig. 1 and 2, the machine, object of the invention, intended for molding sticks of rouge, as well as for the transfer of said sticks in their cases, machine comprising a frame 10 which comprises upper and lower horizontal plates 11 and 12, res pectively, spaced apart and supported away from the ground surface in any suitable manner.
On the top plate 11 is mounted a vertical sleeve-shaped support 13 which in turn supports a turnable plate 14. Between the plates 11 and 12 of the machine is mounted, so as to be able to turn, a second horizontal plate 15 supported by upper and lower plates 16 and. 17 respectively, plates fixed to the frame plates 11 and 12.
The upper plate 14 is arranged to carry cases 18 for rouge sticks (fig. 3 and 7 to 9), while the lower plate 15 is intended to support the molds 19 for rouge sticks, the. plates being animated with intermittent rotational movements and arranged in such a way that the cases 18 and the molds 19 can cooperate at a point of the machine designated by 20 in FIG. 1 and designated by transfer station since at this point the molded red sticks are transferred from the molds 19 to the cases 18.
So that the cases 18 for the red sticks are properly carried by the plate 14 and so that said cases can be easily placed. on the plate and remove them, there has been provided a holding mechanism operating by vacuum, a mechanism comprising rings 21 arranged at appropriate intervals on the periphery of the plate, these rings pass through the plate, as seen in FIG.
3, and have on their lower faces frustoconical recesses 22 intended to receive the closed ends of the cases 18. The rings 21 are pierced with axial bores 23 communicating with the recesses 22 and connected to pneumatic ducts 24 extending radially. of a hollow dispensing head 25 fixed to the center of the plate.
The plate 14 comprises a hub 26 extending downward from said plate and in which is mounted a shaft 27 which passes through the sleeve 13 forming a bushing, the sleeve mounted in the frame plate 11. The shaft 27 is axially drilled. and, at its lower end, engaged with a flanged tubular connector 28 housed in a housing 29 and held in engagement with the shaft 27 by a helical spring 30 working in compression.
The tubular connector 28 is connected to a flexible duct 31 going to a vacuum source (not shown) by means of which air can be extracted from the pneumatic ducts 24, from the distributor head 25 and from the bore of the shaft. 27. By virtue of this vacuum holding arrangement, an operator can quickly and conveniently place the lipstick cases 18 on the intermittently rotating platen 14 so that they are held on him by the vacuum created in the conduits 24. and in rings 21:
it suffices for this that he places the closed ends of the cases 18 flat against the flat surfaces of the frustoconical recesses 22 of the rings 21. The inclined surfaces of the recesses 22 automatically act as guides for the cases 18 during this operation and said cases are maintained. in place thanks to the fact that the atmospheric pressure exerted on them is greater than the pressure in the air ducts 24 and in the bores 23 of the rings.
The plate 14 is driven by a periodic rotational movement of a fraction of a turn each time by a ratchet wheel 32 keyed to the shaft 27 and placed between the hub 26 and the bearing 13, the wheel 32 being engaged. with a pawl 33 subjected to the action of a spring and carried by a bar 34 capable of conlisse horizontally and connected by a connecting rod 35 to a lever 36 provided with a roller 37 cooperating with a cam 38 mounted on a horizontal shaft 39 of the machine, shaft which is the main shaft of the latter and which rotates in a continuous movement.
The plate 14 is locked in each of these successive positions by a trigger 40 (fig. 1) triggered by the bar 34.
The lower plate 15 of the machine carries the molds 19 for the sticks of rouge at regular intervals on its periphery, these molds being generally tubular in shape and placed in the vertical position with their open end or mouth 41 facing upwards. . As seen in Figs. 2 and 7 to 9, each mold 19 is formed of a section comprising an outer section or sleeve 42 having an outer flange 43 at its upper part, which flange is intended to cooperate with the upper wall of a heating and cooling jacket 44. in the form of a segment and surrounding the mold.
A number of shirts have been provided as can be seen in FIG. 1, liners extending along the periphery of the tray 15, so that a heating or cooling liquid can be circulated around all of the molds by the means described below.
In the external section or sleeve 42 of each mold is mounted, so as to be able to slide, an internal section 45 comprising a housing 46 having a lower surface 47. The internal sections 45 of the molds are in the form of plungers and have tails 48 passing through. the lower walls 49 of the mold sections 42 and carrying coil springs 50 (Fig. 3j working in compression and held in place by enlargements 51 of the lower ends of the tails 48.
Plungers 45 are normally held in the lowered or withdrawn position, as seen in Figs. 2 and 7, by the springs 50; they can be periodically raised, so that their upper edges come to be placed slightly above the flanges 43 of the mold sections 42, by a push rod 52 mounted so as to be able to slide in a sleeve 53 carried by the plate 12 of the mold. lower frame of the machine, said rod being connected by a connecting rod 54 to an elbow lever 55 provided with a roller 56 controlled by a cam 57 carried by the main shaft 39, with continuous rotational movement, of the machine.
The push rod 52 is located at the transfer station 20 of the machine (FIG. 1); in consequence, the plungers 45 of the molds can be moved upwards when they are at the transfer station, this movement constituting part of the transfer operation which will be described below in more detail and thanks to which the molded red sticks are transferred from the molds 19 to the cases 18 carried by the upper plate 14.
As seen in Figs. 1 and 2, the heating and cooling jackets 44 are connected to supply and discharge conduits 58 and 59 engaged in openings 60 of the plate 15, orifices arranged in concentric circles. A rotary valve (or slide) 61 is mounted on studs 62 carried by the plate 17 of the machine and it is pushed upwards against the underside of the dial 15, so as to co-operate by sliding and by friction with the latter , by helical springs 63 working in compression and engaged on the studs 62.
The valve 61 has on its upper face two grooves in concentric arcs of circles 64 and 64a extending over a relatively long arc and another pair of grooves in ares of concentric circles 65 and 65a extending over a much shorter arc, all these grooves being established to communicate, in a predetermined order, with the apertures 60 of the dial 15 whereby the molds 19 can be heated before they receive the initial charge of lipstick, and then cooled after they have received said charge.
Coolant conduits 66 and 66a are attached to the rotary valve 61 and communicate with the grooves 64 and 64a of this valve respectively, so that a coolant can be circulated in the liners 44 of the tray 15 on about three quarters of the stroke of the latter (see fig. 1). From Mrs. hot fluid conduits 67 and 67a (FIG. 2) have been provided communicating with the grooves 65 and 65a of the valve to supply hot liquid to the liners 44 immediately after they have left the transfer station 20, for a period of time. about quarter turn of the plate 15.
The molds 19 are filled with loads of heated plastic lipstick capable of being molded and which contracts on cooling; the filling is done in such a way that each mold conveys a maximum quantity of said material, taking into account its dimensions, to transfer it to the cases 18 for lipstick. To obtain this result, two loading stations 68 and 69 have been provided in the machine, which makes it possible to supply each mold with a complete initial charge of material capable of being molded, then to cool the initial charge ( which contracts it) and then to fill the mold with an additional charge of substance capable of being molded to fill it again and to compensate for the shrinkage of the first charge.
Compared to fig. 1, the lower plate 15 is moved, as indicated by the arrow, by a movement of rotation in the direction of clockwise (movement which is intermittent as will be explained below) and we have shown loading station 68 as being on the left of the centerline
C crossing the dial, while the loading station 69 is to the right of this line and in a position almost diametrically opposed to that of the station 68.
As seen in fig. 6, each loading station comprises a conduit 70 which is presented in the form of a three-way valve and comprises a key 71 which can turn in a plug 72; the latter has three 73 threaded inlet and outlet fittings. One of the fittings 73 is provided with a nozzle 74 fixed to the upper frame plate 11 of the machine, whereby the fitting can flow into any of the molds 19 placed on the plate 15 and coming under. him. The opposite connector 73 of the tap is connected by a nozzle 75 to a power source (not shown) of heated viscous lipstick, capable of being molded.
The last connection 73 of the valve is connected to a tube 76 acting as a cylinder and in which a plunger or piston 77 can move.
We see in fig. 1, that keys 71 are controlled by connecting rods 78 and 79 connected to levers 80 and 81, respectively, which in turn are periodically controlled by cams 82 and 83 mounted on the main shaft 39 of the machine. The pistons 77 are controlled by connecting rods 84 and 85 which are connected to levers 86 and 87 periodically controlled also by cams 88 and 89 mounted on the main shaft 39 of the machine.
To produce the periodic advancement movement of the lower plate 15, the latter has been provided with a certain number of rollers 90 placed at its periphery and intended to come into engagement with a control cam 91 mounted on the main shaft 39. ; thanks to this arrangement, the plate 15 is driven by an intermittent movement in the direction of clockwise, each movement corresponding to a fraction of a turn, the intervals during which the plate is at rest being such that a pair of molds 19 are placed at the loading stations 68 and 69, whereby it is possible to introduce loads of lipstick into the molds.
Likewise, during the periods of rest of the plate 15, a mold 19 is brought to the transfer station 20, thanks to which the stick of rouge which has been molded therein can be transferred into a case 18, as will be described below. detailed way.
A device has been provided for guiding the molded lipstick stick with a view to its transfer from a mold 19 into a case 18 and for positioning and aligning the mold 19 at the transfer station 20, with the case 18. .
As seen in Figs. 1 to 5, this device takes the form of a floating clamp comprising two jaws 92 and 93 cooperating with each other and constituted by straight blocks supported, so as to be able to slide, by two guide bars 94 and 95 fixed at their ends in blocssupports 96 which can slide on bars 97 mounted in blocks 98 fixed to the upper plate 11 of the frame of the machine.
The guide bars 94 and 95 carry coil springs 99 working on compression, springs normally tending to urge the clamping jaws 92 and 93 towards each other and into engagement with each other, said jaws being able to be moved apart by slides 100 provided with arms 101 which come into engagement with the rollers 102 carried by the jaws. The slides 100 can slide in guide blocks 103 and 104 fixed to the frame plate 11 of the machine; these slides 100 are controlled by a cam 105 cooperating with studs 106 mounted on the slides.
The cam 105 is mounted on a shaft 107, one end of which rests on the guide block 103, while the other end rests on a support bar 108 fixed to the blocks 98. The cam 105 is controlled by an arm 109 connected to a connecting rod 110 which, in turn, is connected to a lever 111 controlled periodically by a cam 112 mounted on the main shaft 39 of the machine.
The control of the cam 105 forces the jaws 92 and 93 either to move away or to move closer to each other, under
Faction of compression springs 99.
In fig. 5 and 7 to 9, it is seen that the clamping jaws 92 and 93 have semi-circular vertical grooves 113 in their opposite faces, which grooves form, when the jaws. Close together is a channel through which a molded stick 114 of lipstick can pass. The upper parts of the jaws are widened to receive and to embrace the cases 18 and the lower parts of the jaws 92 and 93 have semi-circular bushings 115 directed downwards and arranged to be placed around the outer flanges 43 of the molds 19 coming from engaged with them.
The jaws 92 and 93 also include air passage channels 116 extending parallel to the grooves 113 and the lower ends of which are in communication with the housings formed by the bushes 115. At their upper ends, the passage channels d 'air 116 are connected to flexible ducts 117 which are themselves in communication with a source of compressed air (not shown).
In the arrangement as described, a combined mechanical and pneumatic transfer of the lipstick sticks is obtained between the molds 19 and the cases 18 which are presented successively and placed at the location of the transfer station 20 of the machine, this transfer sucking performed very quickly and without risk of damage or deformation of the molded sticks. In addition, the possibility of depositing dust or other foreign bodies on the molded lipstick sticks is avoided: as a result, the finished product is of substantially constant shape and it is free of any foreign body which could be harmful.
The control of the compressed air which is supplied to the clamping jaws 92 and 93 is ensured by an air valve 118 (fig. 1) controlled by a cam 119 mounted on the shaft 39 of the machine. The air is automatically supplied to the jaws 92 and 93 after they have been closed and its supply is interrupted before the separation of the jaws.
The operation of the machine, object of the invention, is as follows: all the moving parts of the machine are controlled by the rotation of the main shaft 39 of said machine, by means of cams carried by this shaft. Under these conditions, the correct adjustment, over time, of the various components of the machine can be automatically ensured by correct design and adjustment of the cams. For each revolution of the main shaft 39, the lower plate 15 receives from the cam 91 an advancing movement of a fraction of a turn thanks to which successive molds 19 are presented to the loading stations 68 and 69 and also to the transfer 20, the plate remaining stationary for a determined period with the molds occupying said positions.
At the same time as the lower plate 15 thus moves, the upper plate 14 receives a rotational movement of a fraction of a turn from its ratchet control mechanism, itself controlled by the cam 38 mounted on the shaft 39, whereby successive lipstick cases 18 are presented to the transfer station 20; dial 14 also remains. motionless for periods of time when the cases 18 remain at the transfer station.
It is understood that the cases 18 are placed by hand on the dial 14 and that they are held there by the suction exerted in the conduits 24 connected to the rings 21 of the plate.
During the rest periods of the trays 14 and 15, the loading mechanisms at the stations 68 and 69 are made operative by the rotation of the main shaft 39 and loads of lipstick are deposited in the molds 19.
In fig. 6, it is seen that, before the deposit of a charge in a mold 19 at any one of the loading stations, the material capable of being molded, viscous and hot, from the power source is supplied to the channel of the valve 71 by the effect of gravity and the withdrawal of the piston 77, which occurs during the movements of the plates 14 and 15. When the plates remain stationary, the valve 71 is controlled so as to communicate its channel with the end 74, after which piston 77 advances to the right, causing substance to flow from the valve, through mouthpiece 74, into mold 19.
A predetermined quantity of material is thus placed in the mold 19, after which the piston is brought back, whereby the substance remaining in the nozzle 74 is sucked into the valve 71 and into the cylinder 76. After this operation, the valve 71 receives a new rotational movement bringing it to the position shown in FIG. 6. By the aforementioned suction effect, an advantageous removal of the substances A is obtained from the connector 74, which eliminates any tendency for said substances to drip onto the plate 15, which would lead to losses. or would create unpleasant working conditions.
When the plate 15 continues its intermittent advancing movement, the molds 19 which have been loaded at the molding station 68 are cooled by the cooling jackets 44: the material capable of being molded and placed in the molds contracts by the cooling effect. When the molds 19 initially loaded reach the loading station 69, the withdrawal (or contraction) of the substance therein has become sufficient so that an additional load can be introduced into the molds, which takes place at station 69 in the same way as for depositing the initial charge at station 68.
With the plate 15 continuing to rotate clockwise, the molds 1. 9 which have been loaded twice are presented to the transfer station 20. At this point, when the plates 14 and 15 are at rest, the guiding and positioning device consisting of the clamping jaws 92 and 93 acts and the jaws are forcibly pushed towards each other, whereby they grip the lipstick case 18 presented at the post of transfer and also the flange 43 of the mold 19 also presented to said station.
In this way, the mold and the lipstick case are precisely aligned and held; any slight irregularity in the position of the mold 19 is therefore corrected by the floating mounting of the positioning devices, thanks to which the jaws 92 and 93 can move on the guide bars 94 and 95 and laterally with the support blocks 96, since the latter can slide on the transverse bars 97 fixed to the block 98.
When the clamping jaws 92 and 93 close on the case 18, the latter can move sideways if it is not in line with the jaws, since the recess 22 of the ring 21 is sufficiently large. to allow slight lateral displacement of the case on the flat surface of the recess.
When the clamping jaws 92 and 93 come against each other, the plunger 45 of the mold 19 thus clamped is lifted, to be brought to the position shown in FIGS. 8 and 9, under the action of the push rod 52 and the angled lever 55 which controls it. This device partially ejects the molded lipstick stick 46 from the mold 1. 9. Compressed air is then supplied through conduits 117 and passes through the air channels 116 in the directions indicated by the arrows in FIG. . 8.
This compressed air passes around the molded lipstick stick which has contracted slightly, as seen, and which has moved away from the walls of section 45 of the mold.
Air pressure on the lipstick stick produces a lifting effect and quickly pushes the lipstick stick upward like a projectile. The lipstick stick then passes from the channel formed by the grooves 113 of the clamping jaws to the case 18 where it is retained. For retaining the stick of lipstick in the case 18, the transverse wall 18a of the case is preferably pierced with an opening 18b (fig. 7,8 and 9), an opening made so as to form a projection. on the underside of the wall. This protrusion tends to penetrate into the material of the lipstick stick while firmly holding said stick in the case.
When the molded lipstick stick 114 is transferred to the case 18, the jaws 92 and 93 are separated by the action of the cam 105, after which the trays 14 and 15 continue their intermittent rotational movement to present to the station. transfer 20 the next filled mold and the next lipstick case. The case 18 carrying the molded lipstick stick 46 is held on the tray 14 by the suction device provided and it can be removed by an operator when empty lipstick cases are placed on the tray.
The inner diameter of the outer mold section 42 is slightly larger than the diameter of the bore or passage formed by the grooves 113 of the jaws 92 and 93, the difference in diameter being such that the larger diameter molded lipstick stick is forced to fit tightly into the passage formed by the clamping jaws. This has the result of making more efficient the action of the compressed air which transfers the sticks of red.
A variant of the sequence of operations which the machine can perform, and which offers several advantages, is as follows: When the molds 19 arrive at the transfer station 20, the plungers 45 of the molds advance first, after which the clamping jaws 92 and 93 are close to each other.
The pressurized air then acts through the passages 116 of the clamping jaws, producing a transfer of the stick of rouge from the mold 19 to the case 18. This variant of the process has several advantages; in the first place, it prevents planing of the lipstick from the mold stick by the lower edges of the clamping jaws; such planing would give rise to a loss of material and, by accumulating, it would end up giving rise to the deformation of the sticks of rouge. Second, there is no delay in the advancement of the plunger 45, which delay could occur if the plunger advanced after the clamping of the jaws.
Such a delaying action would have the effect of firmly applying the stick of rouge in the plunger, making it difficult for the compressed air to pass around said stick of rouge and its ejection from the mold.
After the jaws 92 and 93 have been brought together, the plunger 45 can be withdrawn slightly, leaving a greater clearance between the molded stick of red and the bottom of the recess of the plunger, since the stick of red is retained. by the clamping jaws. This further facilitates the action of the compressed air.
These variants in the following operations of the plunger and of the clamping jaws can easily be carried out by a suitable modification of the cams of the main shaft 39 of the machine, as is easy to understand for any person skilled in the art.
With the described arrangement whereby the ejection and transfer of the molded rouge sticks into the cases are ensured primarily by pneumatic action, the risks of deformation or contamination by dust or foreign bodies of the molded rouge sticks are removed and a more uniform product can therefore be obtained.
The initial ejection of the stick of rouge molded out of the molds by the action of the plunger sections of the molds is not sufficient to deform said stick, as could happen if the sticks of rouge were completely transferred to the cases. by divers and if, at the end of such a transfer, they were put in their position by stops provided in the cases.
