Tab intended to be housed in the hollow edge of a printing machine cliché. Address printing machine polo plates and the like are provided along one of their edges with a number of slits in any of which can be fitted with a removable indicator tab. By modifying the number, position, color or other indications of the legs carried by the different plates, it is possible to greatly facilitate the selection by hand of the individual plates or of the classes of plates. The indicator tabs can also be used to automatically control the operation of the printing machine or press through which the clichés pass.
Ideally, these tabs should be simple to manufacture, and their insertion into the clichés and their removal should be simple and quick. do not have to. not require the use of a tool. However, when they are in place, they must be prepared against accidental release and they must be sufficiently rigid in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the cliché to withstand the forces exerted by the maneuver of divers or contacts. controlling a printing machine in which the cliché is used.
The successive fitting and removal of the tabs must not cause wear to the tabs or the clichés.
The object of the present invention is. a tab intended to be received in the hollow edge of a cliché for a printing machine, a cliché of the type having a marginal slot and a locking slot parallel to the marginal slot and formed in one of the walls of said edge.
It is characterized in that it is formed of a flank made of an elastic sheet folded back on itself, one of the branches thus formed having a raised end moving away from the other branch so as to constitute a locking tab. and the other branch having lateral edges curved towards the first, so as to constitute lateral ears, so that, when this tab is introduced, with the ends of the branches forward, in the marginal slot From said edge, the rusting worm tongue elastically enters the locking slot and thus prevents the tab from coming out, said side ears fitting into the marginal slot increasing the rigidity of the tab.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, three embodiments of the tab forming. the object of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the first embodiment of the leg mounted on a photograph.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the embodiment of FIG. 1, on a larger scale.
Fig. 3 is a section along the line III-III of FIG. 4.
Fig. 4 is a front view, on a larger scale, of part of FIG. 1. Fig. 5 is a view similar to that of FIG. 3, showing how to fix and remove the tab on the cliché.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are sections along the line VI-VI of FIG. 3, showing the effect of fortuitous differences between certain respective dimensions of the plate and of the leg.
Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the second embodiment and of the edge of a cooperating cliché.
Fig. 10 is a perspective view of. third embodiment.
The first embodiment of the tab shown in. fig. 1 is mounted on a cliché 1, of a well-known type, made of a U profile with thin flanges, the flanges of the edges of the cliché being in a plane parallel to, the main part the. of the cliché. A marginal portion 1c of each flange is folded back so as to come parallel to. a neighboring part lb and at a certain distance therefrom. The top flange, looking at fig. 1, has, on its upper edge, that is to say along the line of the fold, a row of marginal slots 1d, each of which is intended for. receive a leg 2.
This well-known type of cliché further comprises, in the top flange, a second row of slots 1e, obtained by cutting in the. marginal part 1c of the retangal notches each intended to receive a locking tab carried by the tab 2, as will be seen below.
Each of these locking slots 1c is long enough to correspond to several slots 1d (Fig. 3). This facilitates the manufacture without affecting the rigidity of the construction, since teeth 1f included between the slots bridge it against the recurved part 1g of the ZT of the cliché, between the main part la and the flange and these teeth. are close enough to each other to give the necessary rigidity.
This plate 1 is intended to be used with legs 2 each consisting of a single blank made of an elastic sheet, for example, an alloy of copper and glucinium. The blank is folded back on itself, the fold constituting the upper edge of the tab, the two branches being parallel, but at a distance from each other. The upper part 2a of the tab is, as a whole comprising the two branches, of rectangular shape, and its width is greater than that of the slots 1d of the upper edge of the plate.
The inner part of the leg is narrower and designed to fit exactly in one of the tents 1d. Lia lower part 2b of the front branch (looking at Fig. 22) of the leg, has its lower end curved forward, so as to constitute a worm tongue 2c perpendicular to said branch which is. destined to. enter the locking slot 1e of the cliché when the tab is in place.
The lower part 2d of the rear branch is curved forward, on its two sides, so as to constitute ears 2e projecting from each side of the lower part 2b of the front branch. These ears 2e have such a width, from back to front, that they adapt. exactly in the slots 1d, when the legs are mounted on the cliché, as will be seen in more detail below.
To introduce the leg into the cliché, it suffices to take it between the finger and the thumb, thus tightening the front branch against the rear branch, which allows the lower part of the leg to be inserted into one of the slots 1d of the upper edge of the cliché. By releasing the tab, the front branch returns elastically to the front and the tab 2c enters the locking slot the of the snap. The 2nd ears adapting. tightly in the slots 1d give the tab the desired rigidity in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the cliché.
In order to facilitate the introduction of the tab, the lower part 2b of the front branch is longer than the lower part 2d of the. rear limb, so that when the two limbs are clamped together, the tab 2c and the lower end of the front limb can be placed first with the tab angled forward, like this is shown in solid lines in FIG. 5, after which we can bring the leg phis or less vertically, as shown in phantom, and push it down into place.
The establishment is also. facilitated by the special shape of the ears 2e which will be examined later.
The leg can be easily removed when desired by squeezing the two branches together with a finger and thumb and pulling directly on the leg. Since it is not necessary to back up the tab in the plane of the flange, neither to put it in place, nor to remove it. The tabs arranged in adjacent slots 1d may be of such a width that they come to fit closely against each other.
The width from back to front of the 2e ears gradually increases, from a minimum width at the free end of the rear limb to a maximum width a little below half the height of the lower part of this branch, so that this part 2e has an inclined front edge 2f, after which its width remains constant and it has a front edge 2g parallel to the branch. Thus, when the tab is -in place, its ears can sink in like wedges in the slots 1d, which facilitates the establishment. The ears are curved at an angle of less than 90 relative to the lower part 2d of the rear branch, these ears 2e are inclined outwardly away from one another.
From this dewlap, the edges of these ears come to bear on the ends of a marginal slit 1d in which they are introduced.
It has been found, in practice, that it is not possible, under industrial manufacturing conditions, to maintain the clearance between the two parts 1b and le of the cliché flange, so It is exact between close limits. On the other hand, the length of the slots 1d can be kept exactly between very close limits. The distance between the edges 2g of the ears 2e is slightly greater than the length of the slits 1d and Figs. 6, 7 and 8 show how the lug fits into the picture in the case of different clearances between parts 1b and 1e of the flange.
Fig. 6 shows the case in which the play between parts 1b and 1e is minimum. The sharp corner of the marginal part 2g of each ear then cuts a small groove in the cliché, both in the end of the slit 1d and in the back surface of the part 1c of the flange. Figs. 7 and 8 represent cases in which the clearance between parts 1b and le of the flange is maximum.
The sharp outer corner of each edge 2g can then cut a slight groove in the end of the slot 1d, as seen in fig. 8, or the part 2d can be slightly curved as seen in FIG. 7. In all cases, the ears 2e firmly engage the ends of the slits. In the case of fig. 6, the 2nd ears fit tightly. between the two parts lb and the. In fig. 7 and 8, they are a little more free.
In all cases, the solidity of the fixing of the whole of the tab in the flange is reinforced by the ears.
The ears 2e are intended to function as wedges, so as to facilitate the installation of the tab either that the wedges act only against the ends of the slots, or that they also bear against the surface of the part 1e of the flange.
The position of the ears 2e in the ends of the slot 1d prevents the movement of the tab in the direction of the arrow X in FIG. 3, even under the worst possible conditions. Grooves formed in the slots do not adversely affect or affect the safety of the tab, even after it has been put in place several times.
Likewise, it is not possible in practice to adjust between close limits the distance measured parallel to the branches between the upper end of the plate flange and the upper edges of the slots 1e and, consequently, it would not be possible to em fish moving the. tab in vertical direction by engaging the lower shoulders of the upper part 2a of the tab with the top of the flange when the tab 2c is in engagement with the upper edge of a slot the.
The distance measured parallel to the branches between the marginal edges 5 of the slots 1d and the upper edges of the slots 1c can, however, be adjusted closely and, therefore, it is possible to prevent the displacement of the tab in the vertical direction by providing the branch front, the tab of a projection 27z. pyramid-shaped, the lower edge of this projection being intended for. engage the marginal edge of the slot 1d when the tab 2c engages the upper edge of the slot 1c.
This 2h protrusion is. obtained by cutting a horizontal slot in part 2b of the front branch. and stamping. the metal to the front, immediately above this slot. This slot is made exactly at the desired height, so that, when the tab is fully inserted and its locking tab 27t. is in the slot le, in engagement with the upper edge of this slot, the lower edge of the projection 2h comes. bear against the front marginal edge of the. slot 1d.
The protrusion 27z also serves to indicate how the tab should. be introduced into the snapshot.
Of course, the tab just described need not necessarily be used with the cliché shown. It could be used, for example, with a similar cliché, but in which the slots are numerous. equal to that of the slits ld and correspond exactly with these slits.
Fig. 9 shows part of a cliché and the second embodiment of the tab intended to be mounted on this cliché. In the latter, instead of the locking slots, it is.
provided a row of locking slots 1h. formed by elongated rectangular openings located in the le part of the flange, at a certain distance above the lower edge of the latter which abuts against the part 1g. The slots 1h. each correspond to a slit ld although, if we wished, they could be longer,
like the slots 1e of the preceding figures.
The rear branch 2d of the leg is longer than its front branch 2b. Consequently, when the. tab by pushing it, so that the tongue 2c engages in a slot 1h and the projection 2h bears on the front marginal edge of the slot 1d, the edges 2g and 2f of the ears 2e can. fit substantially along their entire length against the the part of the. flange. We see that the bottom of this part 1c of the flange, which is curved inward so as to bear. right angle on the part 1g, is shaped so as to fit on the inclined edges 2f of the ears 2c. This results in a very solid engagement.
Fig. 10 shows a third embodiment of the tab, this is longer and is intended to be introduced into two adjacent slots 1c7 instead of one or, in other words, into an interrupted slot. Its two branches are therefore cut in 2 days. It also has two projections 2h intended to engage the front marginal edges of two adjacent slots 1d.
Due to the. cutout 2j, the locking tab 2c is divided into two parts, but the rear branch has only two ears 2e intended to engage with the ends distant from each other of two adjacent slots ld.
The two parts 2c of the tongue are intended to engage with a single slot the or with two adjacent slots 1c.
In another embodiment, two cutouts 2j or more could be made in an even longer tab intended to be placed in three slots 1d or clav anta-e.
The forms of execution of the leg we come from. to describe can easily be inserted into and removed from a hollow edge of a cliché. Once in place, they are rigidly fixed in the edge of the cliché and can withstand the push of selector needles. They do not damage the cliché, appreciably, even after repeated placement and removal.
