sheet transfer mechanism. The present invention relates to a sheet transfer mechanism.
Feeders have already been widely used in connection with printing machines and generally include an oscillating gripper transfer mechanism, by which a margined sheet is gripped while at rest, and then fed to it. increasing speed to a rotating impression cylinder or other printing member. In these known devices, the transfer grippers travel, during the transport of the sheets to the printing cylinder, quite simply a circular path.
The mechanism which is the subject of the present invention, which is a mechanism for transferring sheets to a machine which makes them undergo an operation, comprises transfer grippers and a control device arranged to move them through a determined angle, is characterized in that it comprises an additional device arranged to move, at least for a moment, the ends of said grippers out of the way that said control device would subject them if it were alone, to make them grasp a margined sheet ready to be transferred.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the sheet transfer mechanism according to the invention.

Fig. 10 is an end view of the members shown in FIG. 3, and fig. 11 is a schematic view similar to FIG. 6, showing the path followed by the transfer grippers in the event that sheet delay means are incorporated in the device.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, there is a transfer shaft 10 mounted in bearings 12 and 13 provided in the side walls 11 of a frame. This shaft 10 constitutes a support for a row of arms 14 which have been clamped on it and which in turn carry a shaft 15 supporting clamps and mounted so as to be able to turn.
The transfer shaft 10 carries, at that of its ends where it receives its order, a disc 16 on which a segment 17 has been fixed by means of screws 18.
The transfer shaft 10 is driven in an angular back and forth movement from the disc 16 by means of a coupling comprising, on the one hand, all tube 19 (see FIG. 2) having a notch 99 , on the other hand, a compression spring 20 and a wedge 21 fixed on the adjacent end of the tube 19 which can slide into an opening provided for this purpose in the transfer shaft, and which can be raised or lowered quickly to put it on or off with the control disc 16. in a manner which will be explained later.
The means provided for animating with a reciprocating angular movement the control disc 16 and thereby the transfer shaft 10 are shown in FIG. 4. There is a distinction between lever 22 coming from manufacture with a toothed segment 23 which meshes with the control segment 17. This lever is tightened by means of a screw 25 on an axis 24 which can rotate in said frame.
Similar rollers 27 and 28 are fixed to the lever 22 by means of adjustable pins 26 and cooperate with the cams 29 and 30 respectively. The latter are wedged on the control shaft 31 which makes one revolution per printing in the case where we are dealing with a printing machine of the double-turn type.
The cams 29 and 30 and the rollers 27 and 28 are shaped and arranged so as to animate the lever 22 and thereby the control disc 16 in an angular reciprocating movement. . The rollers 27 and 28 are mounted on the lever 22 by means of adjustable pins, in order to allow adjustment giving permanent contact, free of play, of said rollers with the adjoining cam.
This assembly also makes it possible to vary the amplitude of the movement of the lever 22 in one and the other of the two directions. Several similar grippers 33 (see fig.1) are mounted on the shaft 15, at a certain distance from the grippers provided on the printing cylinder; these clamps have fingers 34 (Fig. 5). A lever 37 (see FIG. 5) is also fixed by means of a screw 35 and a key 36 on that of the ends of the shaft 15 by which the latter receives its command. This lever carries a roller 38 rotating on an axis 39 mounted so as to allow adjustment of said roller for purposes which will be explained further below.
During the transfer operation, the roller 38 cooperates with a cam 40 fixed to the left part of the frame by means of screws 41.
A lever 44 pivotally mounted on one of the ends of the shaft 15 cooperates with the lever 37 and actuates a bar 42 carrying tabs 43. Said bar 42 is pivoted on supports integral with the shaft 15 and passes through recesses made in the arms 14 (Fig. 7). On the free end of the lever 44 is mounted, by means of an adjustable axis, 11n roller 38A (see fig. 2) similar to the roller 38 mounted on the lever 37.
During the transfer movement, the roller 38A overlaps a cam 45 fixed on the frame 11.
A rod 47 (see fig. 5) pivoted on the lever 37 ali by means of a pin 46 has one end which can slide in a boss -18 of the lever 44. A compression spring 19 surrounding the rod 47 extends between the boss 48 of the lever 44 and that of the ends of the rod 47 which is fixed to the lever 37. This spring tends to bring the fingers 34 into contact with the corresponding tabs 43.
In order to allow the adjustment of the amplitude of the movement, which is done in an anti-clockwise direction, of the lever 37, and consequently the intensity of the pressure exerted by the fingers 34 on the adjacent legs 43 , there is provided an adjusting screw 50 carried by the lever 44 and in contact with the axis 46 which is solidary to the lever 37.
In mechanisms of this type, the sheets to be transferred are usually brought one by one onto a feed table 51 and put in place or margined by pressing one of their edges against the guides 52 (FIG. 5). To allow the transfer of a sheet previously placed in place, these guides are retracted by means of the lever 53 pivoted at 54 and provided with a roller 55 which overlaps on a rotating cam 56 mounted on the shaft 31.
The means for opening and closing the grippers 33 in order to grasp one sheet after the other are formed by the cam 57 (see fig. 5), fixed to the lever 58 which is pi voted on a pin 59 and provided with 'a roller 60 overlapping on a rotating cam 61 also mounted on the shaft 31. The movement of this cam 61 has the effect of raising and lowering the lever 58 and thereby moving the. cam 57 to place it at an appropriate time in and out of the path of roller 38, thereby producing the opening and closing of grippers 33 on the sheet to be transferred. A spring 62 which surrounds a sliding rod maintains the roller 60 in permanent contact with the cam 61.
During the transfer of a sheet, the fingers 34 of the grippers and the legs 43 follow a substantially parabolic path, as shown in FIG. 6, this path being tangent. to the impression cylinder 62 at the transfer point. The circular path followed by the grippers of known sheet transfer mechanisms is indicated by a mixed line C clans this same FIG. 6 and in fig. 11, with a view to clearly showing the dif ference existing between the paths of the grippers of known mechanisms and those of that which is now described.
At the transfer point, the clamps 63 of the cylinder close on the sheet, while the transfer clamps begin to open thanks to the action of the roller 38 which comes to run or exceed the highest point of the cam 40 Following the parabolic path, the grippers 33 travel, from the guides 52, to the point where the sheets are given to the cylinder 62, a path which is substantially elongated, so that the acceleration of a sheet , from the moment she left the position she occupied when pressed against the guides until she had.
reaches the circumferential speed of the printing cylinder, that is to say upon arrival at the transfer point, takes place for a relatively long time, thus avoiding precipitous removal of the sheet, which could disturb its implementation. When the transfer grippers have released the sheet, they are again slowed down to zero before returning to another sheet to be transported. During this return stroke, the transfer clamps follow a path which is tangent to the impression cylinder 62, preferably at a point on this cylinder where there is a clearance G.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 7, it can be seen that a lever 63 is fixed to the opposite end of the shaft 15, this lever cooperating with the lever 44. At one end of the lever 63 (see FIG. 7) is fixed the bar 42 and the other end is an adjustable axis on which is journaled a roller 38B similar to the roller mounted on the levers 37 and 44. The roller 38B overlaps on a cam 64 which has the same shape as the cam 45 shown in fig. 5.
The three follower rollers 38, 38-1 (see fig. 2) and 38B (see fig. 7) are mounted on their respective levers 37, 44 and 63 by means of adjustable pins in order to allow the execution of adjustments in the aim to eliminate any play in the mechanism and also to prevent the bar 42, which extends over the entire width of the mechanism and which in itself could be subjected to considerable torsional fatigue, from being stressed by a torque.
To maintain the rollers 38E1 and 38B mounted on the levers 44 and 63, respectively in contact with the associated cams 45 and 64, two rod and spring assemblies are provided such as that shown in FIG. 7. Each assembly acts on one of the arms 14 which are fixed to both ends of the transfer shaft 10, as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. On a support 65 integral with the bar 42 is pivoted the rod 66, one of the ends of which can slide in the axis 67 which can rotate in the arms 14 of the transfer shaft 10.
The compression spring 68 is supported, on the one hand, on the axis 67 and, on the other hand, on a shoulder of the rod 66 and tends to rotate the lever 44 or 63 which is slaved to it, counterclockwise, and in this way keep one of the follower rollers 38t1 or 38B in permanent contact with one of the assistant cams 45 or 64.
In the event that a sheet is not properly pressed against the guides 52, the control coupling of the transfer shaft is disengaged by the action of a monitoring mechanism shown in FIG. 8. This mechanism can be operated by a common leaf feeler which is not shown.
When a sheet is in place, the lever 69 pivoted on the axis 70 receives pressure from said sheet feeler, pressure which puts it in the drawn position and in which its end 71 is in the path of a stop 72 provided on -Lin lever 73 which is pivoted on a shaft 74, so as to prevent the roller 75 from remaining in contact with the rotating cam 76 wedged on the shaft 31. On the shaft 74 is also fixed a the sink. 77 provided with a projection 78 and pivotally connected to the rod 79. The opposite end of the latter is slidable in the block 80.
A coil spring 81 which surrounds the rod 79 has a tendency to move the lever 77 and thereby the lever 73 in the opposite direction to that of the needles of a clock, so as to keep the roller 75 in contact with the cam 76 or stop 72 in contact with the end 71 of lever 69, depending on whether the machine works regularly or not.
If, however, a sheet is not properly in place, that is to say badly edged, the detector does not act on the lever 69 and its end 71 then does not act on the stop 72, and the roller 75 subjected to the action of the spring 81 will remain in contact with the cam 76; This in turn will allow the lever 77 to rise and the protrusion 78 to come into the path of the plate 82 which will thus be actuated which will compress the res out 20 and which will displace the wedge 21 and the tube. 19 in the position shown in fig. 9.
In this position, the wedge 21 is released from the V shaped notch 83 provided in the control disc 16 and slides on the internal surface 8 = 1 of this disc. At the same time, the tube 19 is lifted so that the notch 85 is aligned with the edge of the disc 16, in order to allow the latter to oscillate without coming into contact with the coupling tube 19.
As long as there is no sheet firmly in place in front of the guides 52, the watch mechanism keeps the coupling disengaged by lifting and keeping the wedge 21 in its actuated position each time the Turkish opening 83 in. the disc arrives at the engagement position. But as soon as a leaf is. properly in place, the monitoring mechanism no longer acts on the wedge 21 which falls under the action of the spring 20 in the notch 83 as soon as the latter reaches a position conducive to such an engagement, and the transfer mechanism is driven by the control disc 16.
A safety member 86 is provided to prevent the transfer assembly from being uncoupled in positions, other than two well-defined positions. The safety member 86 has two openings 87 and 88 in one of which the tube 19 must project so that the coupling can be disengaged, -y é. In any intermediate position, the tube 19 is held in its active position by the interior surface 89 of this safety member.
The automatic monitoring mechanism only disengages the coupling in the position shown in fig. A. The other position is used to manually place the mechanism in an extreme position in which the impression cylinder and transfer mechanism are best accessible for making adjustments or tune-ups.
Manual disengagement of the transfer mechanism is controlled by means of the locking button 90 and its support 91 which are shown in FIG. 10, it being possible for these members to be set in one or the other of two positions indicated on the plate 92 and which are the on and off positions.
The mechanism which acts when starting or stopping by hand is shown more clearly in figs. 2 and 3, in which the button 90 is shown in the working position also shown in fig. 10. To disengage the mechanism, a traction is exerted on the button 90, traction which acts against the spring 93 exerting pressure on the collar 94, this until the end 95 has left its seat in the plate 92. The button 90 and with it its support 91, wedged on the shaft 96 by means of the key 97, are then displaced in rotation in the direction counterclockwise until they have reached the off position.
At this moment, the end 95 of the rod supporting the button 90 falls into a seat provided to hold it in this position. Said movements of the button 90 and of the support 91 obviously have the consequence of causing a similar movement of the shaft 96 which is concen tric to the transfer shaft 10 and which pivots in one of the ends thereof; at the other end of the shaft 96 is provided an eccentric stud 98 which projects into the notch 99 of the tube 19 of the coupling.
Thus, when the shaft 96 is angularly offset, as described above, the eccentric button 98 rests on the upper wall of the notch 99 while trying to raise it to. against the pressure of the spring 20. But the tube 19 remains in the position it occupies in FIG. 2 by virtue of the action of the safety member 86 until the transfer mechanism has reached a position in which the tube 19 is aligned with one of the two openings 8 7 or 88 of said member .
The tube then enters one of these openings with the result that the wedge 21 is released from the V notch 83 provided in the control disc 16 and that the notch 85 is released. line up with the edge of this disc. As long as the button 90 is left in the off position, the stud 98 maintains the tube 19 in the disengaged position, the control disc continuing to oscillate without dragging the transfer mechanism.
To put the coupling back in the engaged position, the button 90 and the parts which are integral with it are put in the on position, which has the effect that the stud 98 returns to the position which is shown and in which it has been placed. ceased to maintain the tube 19 in its disengaged position. The latter, however, remains in its unobstructed position # where the wedge 21 slides over the inner surface 84 of the control disc 16 until the V notch 83 aligns with tube 19.
It is only then that the spring 20 is allowed to return the tube and the wedge to the active position in which they couple the disc 1.6 with the transfer mechanism.
Precise adjustment of the impression cylinder clamps as to their opening and closing on a transferred sheet is essential and can be accomplished with means incorporated in the transfer mechanism. As shown in fig. 1,
the lever 58 which controls the movement of the opening cam 57 of the clamps of the transfer mechanism also controls the opening and closing of the clamps of the printing cylinder by means of the part 100 which is fixed thereto. The lifting and lowering of lever 58 by the action of cam 61 forces part 100 to move in and out of the path of the printing cylinder clamps opening lever to open and release. close these at the desired times.
In a similar manner, the grippers of the impression cylinder are opened to take out a printed sheet and leave it to a dispensing mechanism not shown, with means which are also actuated by the lever 58. For this purpose, an arcuate segment 102 pivotally mounted at 103 on the frame of the machine is articulated to the arm 101 of the lever 58. The segment 102 drives another segment 104 on which is mounted eccentrically by means of the axis 105 a bar 106 which is in turn articulated. on part 107 which opens the clamps of the impression cylinder. The latter pivots at 108 on the frame 11.
It will be noted that any raising and lowering of the lever 58 is transmitted to the part 107 by the segments 102, 104 and the bar 106, so as to put it on and off the path of the clamps of the printing cylinder to release a sheet.
In modern machines which operate at a very high speed, the precise transfer of the sheets to the impression cylinder at very high speed is essential if maximum capacity is to be obtained. The positive device described above meets this requirement, but can also be used in connection with printing machines fed by hand and with others to which the sheets are fed one by one.
On this subject, -it is good to remember the great difficulties that one meets with the systems of feeding sheet by sheet- when one tries to increase the speed, this difficulty residing especially in the fact that the sheets rebound when they abut against guides such as guides 52 and, in cases where very thin sheets are used, in the tendency of the leading edge of the sheets to roll up when it abuts against said guides.
In order to overcome these difficulties, it is often necessary to reduce the speed of the feeders and, therefore, of the printing machine. -whose production is lowered in the same ratio.
If desired, the device described can easily be modified so as to retard the sheets fed, just before they come into contact with said guides. This prevents the bouncing or winding of the sheets when they come into contact with the guides 52.
For this purpose, the con tour of the cam 57 can be modified, as shown in FIG. 11. Retarding fingers 109 make it possible to retard the speed of a sheet arriving as it is moved over the support 51 towards the guides 52. Said fingers intercept the sheet as they move in the same direction. that the latter and their movement is then gradually slowed down to a point at which the speed of the sheet is practically zero; then, the latter abuts against the guides 52.
During this period of slowing down, the front edge of the sheet is prevented from rolling up on the retarding fingers thanks to the action of the underside of the tabs 43 which hold the sheets in position and in contact with the guide. until the fingers 34 close on the leading edge. These fingers 34 remain open during the slowing down period and do not close on the sheet before the latter has been placed against the guides 52.
The described sheet transfer mechanism operates as follows: A sheet to be transferred rests on the support 51 after being fed against the guides 52; then, the fingers 34 close on the leading edge, as shown in fig. 5. The actuating cams 29 and 30 shown in FIG. 4 cause during their rotation a back and forth movement of the lever 22, this movement being transmitted in turn to the control disc 16 and to the transfer shaft 10.
When the transfer mechanism begins to move in a clockwise direction, the guides 52 are simultaneously removed from the path of the sheet by the action of the lever 53, the roller 55 of which rolls over the culminating part of the sheet. the cam 56. The roller 381 which pivots on the lever 44 then overlaps on the cam 45, the spring 49 holding the lever 37 in the position shown in which the fingers 34 are closed on the associated tabs 43.
The two levers 37 and 44 move as a unit following a substantially parabolic path, as shown in FIG. 6, until they have reached the point at which the sheet is to be transferred, that is, abandoned at. impression cylinder. The roller 38 of the lever 37 then comes into contact with the raised part of the cam 40, the action of which consists in compressing, by means of the lever 37, the spring 49 and in animating the shaft 15 of rotational movement in the direction of the needles of a watch in order to lift the fingers 34.
During this phase of operation, the lever 58 was lowered because the cam 61 had moved the cam 57 out of the path of the roller 38 and placed the cam 100 in the path of the pressing cylinder clamp actuating lever. When the latter arrive at the point where they must grip the sheet, they are effectively opened to allow the engagement of the sheet, they do not close on it until a moment immediately preceding that at which the transfer clamps release their taken.
The transfer grippers continue to rotate clockwise, as shown in fig. 6, until they have completely passed the sheet, then they move in the opposite direction making the return stroke to pick up the next sheet. By performing the return stroke, the transfer clamps pass, vis-à-vis the printing cylinder, while the clearance G is opposite them.
As soon as the transfer clamps move back, the lever 58 also begins to rise, because the roller 60 overlaps on the re-entrant portion of the cam 61, which brings the cam 57 into the path of the roller 38. When this is done last comes into contact with the cam 57 (see fig. 5), the lever 37 compresses the spring 49 again by turning the shaft 15 again clockwise and lifting the fingers 34 , as they approach the sheet to be transferred. Cam 57 retains lever 37 in this position, grippers 34 remaining open until they have reached the position in which they are to grip the next sheet.
The lever 58 then begins to move downwards, and moves the cam 57 away from the roller 38; this allows the spring 49 to close the fingers 34 on the tabs 43, the clamps thus closed then gripping the edge of the sheet between them.
