subjects methyl-3-linalool to limited oxidation, preferably by chromic acid and in the presence of other acids such as sulfuric acid, a mixture of acetic and sulfuric acid, acetic acid, and in this extracting the mixture of methyl-3-citrals from the reaction product.
The conversion of methyl-3-linalool to rrrethyl-3-citrals can be represented by the equation
EMI0001.0020
The mixture of methyl-3-citrals can be isolated by fractional distillation; this operation delivers fractions rich in, methyl-3-citrals which can be used in syntheses during which the alcohols present in these fractions are not affected or are converted into products which are easy to separate from the desired products.
It is also possible to treat the fractions rich in meth-l-3-citrals or the neutral mixtures resulting from the oxidation with reagents capable of addition to aldehydes, such as sodium bisulphite. The mixture of methyl-3-citrals is then regenerated by known methods and can be obtained relatively pure by subsequent fractional distillation.
In the case where the 3-ethyl eitrals are. separated from the other reaction products under the. form of adducts including. they are regenerated, a fraction of the methyl-3-citrals may reassess more lazily and another part may enter into combinations from which it cannot be regenerated, owing to differences in reactivity of the stereoisomers.
The isolable methyl 1-3-citrals in the mixture can be condensed with cetones such as acetone and 1α, n-butanone; these condensation products give, on cyclization, particularly interesting substances.
The following examples show how the invention can be carried out.
The characteristics of the mixture of cis and trans methyl-3- cit.rals obtained are between the limits below, which correspond to. those of the two stereoisomers

Example I.- 150 g of methyl-3-lina.lol were dissolved by stirring at about 95 ° C, with 375 g of water.
While continuing to agitate vigorously and. keeping the temperature around 95 C (or between 60 and e95 C ) , using suitable external cooling, we add, in the space of 30 n:
iinutes, a mixture of 168 g of sodium dichromate, 2-17g of sulfuric acid at '66 Be and 375 of water. Stirring is continued for five minutes after the end of this addition and the product is then cooled rapidly.
300 g of benzene are then added; the benzene layer is then decanted, washed with a solution. with 5% sulfuric acid, then, successively with water, with an 8% solution of sodium bicarbonate, again with water and finally with a dilute solution of acetic acid.
Benzene is exhausted by distillation and. ïc residue, heavy. 130 g, is systematically distilled. The following fractions were finally obtained: 12 g of overheads containing dim.ethyl-heptenone, 4 4 µg of 3-methyl-linalool which can be reused, a mixture of i-netlivl-3-linalool and of niethyl-3-citra.ls, titrating 37% in aldehydes by oximation, and.
53g of a similar mixture. further containing isomeric alcohols of methyl-3-linalool and. titling. 880/0 ci ,. -aldehydes by oxirnation.
This corresponds to a yield of approximately 5501o of crude product based on the methyl-3-lina.lol consumed.
The fractions containing methvl-3-citrals were treated with an aqueous solution of sodium bisulfite under the conditions usually used for the purification of citrals. It was thus obtained, from the fractions mentioned above, 35 -, or 75% of the aldebpdes estimated by the oximation, of a mixture of 3-ethyl citrals.
The mixture of the ntétliyl-3-eitrals regenerated, by splitting. the bisulfite addition compound by means of sodium hydroxide solution has a pleasant lemony odor and its other properties are as follows:
boiling point: 91. to. 92 C under the pressure of?, 8 mm of mercury, or 116 to 117 C under that of 10 mm

<tb> Found <SEP> C <SEP> 79.63 <SEP> I110.720 / 0 The methyl-3-eitrals of the regenerated mixture of the bisulfite combinations immediately give semicarbazones when this mixture is treated with sodium acetate. semicarbazide. We obtain, by crystallizations in methyl alcohol,
a dense crystalline powdered semicarbazone melting between 209 and 209 5 C "accompanied by a more soluble semicarbazon, in the form of pearlescent sheets, having a melting point of 183 to 184 C.
0.2 g of semiearbazone melting between 209 ° and 209 ° C. was converted into dinitro = ?, 4-phenylhydrazone in the usual manner. The product, recrystallized from alcohol. methylic, occurs as bright orange red needles, melting, between 145.5 and 146 C.
Example II: -1-10 = n of methyl-3-linalool were emulsified in 1350 g of water with vigorous stirring. A mixture of 485 g of sodium dichromate, 41.6 g of 66 Bé sulfuric acid and 2550 g of water was introduced in approximately 60 minutes and without interrupting the stirring. The temperature rose rapidly from 20 to 60 ° C. and was maintained at the latter value by cooling. suitable exterior. Stirring was continued for a further 15 minutes after the end of the introduction of the oxidizing mixture.
The further processing was the same: read in the previous example. It was isolated: 72 ri of top fractions containing dimethyl-heptenone, 165 g of 3-ethyl linalool, 30 g of intermediate fractions containing 33% in oximable products, and 137 g of Fractions containing 87% of 3-methyl-citrals.
This corresponds to a yield of approximately. 601% by weight of crude iiietli®, 1-3-citrals relative to the methyl-3-linalool consumed.
The 3-niethyl citrals were extracted from the last of the mentioned fractions by treatment with sodium bisulfite. There was thus obtained 98 s, of a mixture of niethyl-) citrals having the properties mentioned above and free from other products.
Example III: 100g of niethyl-3-lirial.ol were dissolved in 500 g of containing acetic acid. 1.01 / o of water and the whole brought to 40 and 50 C. The temperature rose and was maintained at around 60 C by application. -The exterior cooling is suitable. Stirring was continued for another 5 minutes and the whole was diluted with 1500 g of water.
Then proceeding as in Example II, the following fractions were isolated: 15%; of top fractions containing dimethyl-heptenone, 38 g of methyl-3-linalool, 4 of intermediate fractions.
3: 5 #, of fractions containing 92% of methyl-3-eitrals, the latter being isolated from this fraction in the form of a mixture, as indicated in Example II.
