Silencer. The main patent relates to a muffler on internal combustion engines with a sound-absorbing mass, which is characterized in that a container is angeord net around part of the exhaust pipe, the wall of which forms an annular space with the exhaust pipe, which is connected to the sound-absorbing mass is filled, and that the exhaust pipe in the interior of the container is provided with openings which are only so large that the absorbent mass cannot enter the pipe interior.
It has now been shown that during an exhaust stroke the gases escape through the exhaust pipe at an almost constant speed, whereupon this is emptied again by the next exhaust stroke. During an exhaust stroke, there is a sudden increase in pressure and then an equally rapid pressure drop. Due to these strong pressure fluctuations occurring quickly one after the other, the known exhaust noise is generated, which according to the main patent is reduced by the fact that part of the exhaust gas flow is diverted into the annular container and the sound is absorbed in the porous mass.
According to the present additional invention, a further sound-attenuating effect is thereby produced in that the pressure fluctuations that occur in bursts when the gas is released are weakened.
This additional invention relates to a muffler according to the patent claim of the main patent and is characterized in that the exhaust pipe has means to generate congestion of the exhaust gases in the pipe.
The accompanying drawing shows two exemplary embodiments of the subject matter of the invention, namely FIG. 1 shows a longitudinal section through the first embodiment, FIG. 2 also shows a longitudinal section through the second example and FIG. 3 shows a cross section along the line A-A in FIG , but shown on a larger scale compared to this.
It is denoted with 1 an exhaust pipe and 2 with a concentrically arranged loading container, which is completed by floors 3 at both ends. The ring frame formed by the exhaust pipe 1 and the container 2 is filled with a sound-absorbing mass 4 from. As such a mass 4 are particularly suitable steel chips or iron turnings. The advantage of this filler material 4 is that it is neither clogged nor destroyed by the oil residues entrained by the exhaust gases.
In the exhaust pipe 1 holes 5 are provided which are intended to let a part of the exhaust gases pass through in the annular space of the container 2, whereby part of the noise of the exhaust gases passing through is absorbed in the mass 4.
According to the first example shown in FIG. 1, the exhaust pipe 1 has a constriction 6 in the front end of the container 2, seen in the direction of flow, in the form of a Venturi nozzle. Through this constriction 6 the entering exhaust gases are accumulated.
However, this stagnation should only be so great that the gases can escape through the exhaust pipe 1 at reduced speed in such a way that when the pressure surge occurs in the exhaust pipe 1 during the next exhaust stroke, there is still an air gap, which is able to dampen the next incoming pressure surge.
At its lowest part, the container has holes 7 through which the oil residues and condensates entrained with the exhaust gases can flow off.
Instead of a ventui-idüsenartigeil constriction can also be installed in the exhaust pipe 1 in front of the end of the container 2, a damming flange.
According to the second embodiment shown in FIGS. 2 and 3, the constriction used to stow the exhaust gases consists of several wall parts 8 with a circular sector-shaped cross-section protruding into the interior of the exhaust pipe 1 and covering the openings 9 in the radial direction to the exhaust pipe 1 and form openings 11 to the front, which are intended to direct part of the exhaust gases into the mass 4.
However, these wall parts 8 are only arranged in the front half of the container with respect to the flow direction of the exhaust gases in the exhaust pipe 1, while in the subsequent rear half holes 10 are provided in the wall of the exhaust pipe 1 to allow the exhaust gases to enter the annular space again through them the inside of the exhaust pipe 1 to return. The protruding into the exhaust pipe 1 wall parts 8 now form in their entirety the constriction that produces the congestion of the exhaust gases.
Through the pocket-shaped re-entrant wall parts 8, parts of the absorbent mass 4 cannot get into the exhaust pipe 1 because this is prevented by the flow of the exhaust gases, since the mass cannot leak against the direction of flow.
