Staple machine. In the stapling machines in which we are led to adjust or vary the length of the staple tips, to take into account the variable thickness of the works or materials to be stapled, this adjustment was hitherto ensured by displacement of the single thread cutting mechanism, while the thread advancing mechanism remained in a fixed position relative to the axis of the staple formers. As a result, in all existing machines, the wire could not be guided inside a closed conduit over the entire distance between the advancing mechanism and the cutting mechanism and that one was thus obliged to leave a certain free space along which the wire was not guided.
Under these conditions, when the wire, pushed by the feed mechanism, had difficulty entering the staple-forming members, due to poor straightening or a slight burr produced during cutting, this wire formed loops or flashed in the space where it was not guided, which had the effect of stopping the machine. This was a serious drawback of all known machines, because of the loss of time caused by restarting the machine.
This drawback is all the more annoying as there is a tendency at present to use more and more machines with multiple stapling heads where the engagement of a single stapling head is sufficient to stop the entire machine. In addition, the risk of jamming is increased because it is precisely when the wire used is fine, and consequently not very resistant, that the interval along which the wire is not guided is large, because the shortest staples are made with a fine thread,
thus leaving a particularly large gap without guiding the wire between the advance mechanism and the cutting mechanism.
According to the present invention, this drawback is avoided with the aid of a stapling machine, of the kind in which a sewing head, comprising a pusher and elbows, is fed by a mechanism for advancing the thread which forms the staples. , this advance mechanism comprising a shear which cuts the wire to the desired length and a wire straightening mechanism, a machine which is charac terized in that the wire advance mechanism and the mechanism for cutting said wire are mounted on a frame, at a fixed distance from each other,
the frame being movable according to the feed direction of the thread relative to the sewing head.
The appended drawing, by way of non-limiting example, represents an embodiment of the stapling machine according to the invention: FIG. 1 is an elevational view, with partial section along the longitudinal axis, of the control mechanism for the folding and driving members of the clip, this mechanism being shown in its position at top dead center.

In the embodiment of the stapling machine shown in the accompanying drawing, this machine comprises all of the above mentioned improvements, as will be seen from the description which will be given below.
In this machine, a sewing head 1 contains the control slide 2 which moves inside this sewing head 1 and which transmits its movement to the mechanism 3 for forming the staple, to the mechanism 4 for controlling the staple. thread trimming and to the thread advance mechanism.
The movement of the control slide 2 can be given by an eccentric, as in the example of fig. 3. In this example, the sewing head 1 is fixed on a frame 6 which carries a shaft 7 actuated at its other end by a motor with the intermediary of a clutch, not shown. The shaft 7, supported by a ball bearing 8 fixed to the frame 6 by the washer 9, carries an eccentric 10 keyed on it. The crank pin 11 of the eccentric 10 actuates the control slide 2 by means of the connecting rod 12, articulated at 13 on the slide 2. The smooth control neck therefore describes an alternating rectilinear movement which could just as well be given by another mechanism such as: lever, slide, cam, etc.
The control slide 2 (fig. 1 and 2) carries an axis 14 on which is articulated the connecting rod "15, itself articulated by its axis 16 on the knee lever 17. The knee lever 17 can rotate on an axis 18 carried by the lever 19. This lever 19 is articulated on the axis 20 which is fixed in the sewing head 1. The lever 19 rests by its heel 21 on a stop 22 of the head 1.
On the other hand, the lever 19 is held in position by the piston 23 pushed by the spring 24, the pressure of which can be adjusted by the knurled button screw 25. On the other hand, the toggle 17 has a pin 26 on which is articulated @ toggle rod 27, itself articulated at its other end on the slide 28 of the elbow by axis 29.
The slide 28 of the elbows is at. its lower end a -pièce 30 fixed on the slide and in which are fixed the elbows 31 whose role is to bend the wire on the mandrel described below, so as to form the two points of the clip.
The control slide 2 carries, fixed to it, a part 32 in which is screwed a nut 33 which forms a housing for a spring 34. The spring 34 presses on a central slide 35 which is held in position relative to the slide of commands 2 by its heel 36 which rests on the heel 37 of the part 32. The central slide 35 carries at its lower part the central pusher 38 whose role is to drive it, into the material to be stapled, the clip which was formed by the elbows 31. In its lowering movement, the control slide 2, via the connecting rod 15, rotates the toggle 17 around the axis 18.
The toggle 17 therefore pushes, via the connecting rod 27, on the slide 28 carrying the elbows 31, thus obliging them to bend the wire which is in the mandrel and to descend onto the material to be stapled by holding between them the clip ready to be inserted. This downward movement of the colors 31 will occur until the three axes 18, 26 and 29 are roughly in a straight line. At this moment, given the position taken by the connecting rod 15 (fig. 2), the downward movement of the control slide 2 will only give the toggle 17 a slight rotational movement which will bring the axis 26 to very little distance on either side of the line of axes 18 and 29.
During this last part of the travel of the control slide 2, the colors will therefore remain almost immobile when pressing on the material to be stapled. But, on the other hand, the control slide 2 drives in its movement the slide 35 carrying the pusher 38. The latter will therefore push into the material the clip which is between the colors 31 while they remain stationary. will hold the material to be stapled. If, on the other hand, the thickness of the material to be stapled is greater than that for which the machine has been adjusted, we can clearly see in fig. 2 that, the axis 29 being stopped by the material, the movement of the control slide 2 will have the effect of raising the axis 18 carried by the lever 19 again.
This lever movement 19 will bend the spring 24. Likewise, the extra thickness of material will have the effect of bending the spring 34 when the pusher 38 has fully depressed the clip. In order to avoid that, in the event of excess thickness, the pusher 38 does not cause the back of the clip to penetrate too deeply into the soft materials, the slide 35 has a heel 39 which rests on the heel 40 of the neck. smooth 28 of the elbows when the pusher 38 is at the same level as the elbow 31.
The sewing head I comprises at its lower part a slide 41 (FIGS. 1 and 5). On the sewing head 1 is fixed a part 42 which also comprises a slide 43. The slides 41 and 43 hold the thread frame 44 which can move towards or away from the axis of the bending and driving members. the clip described above. The position of the wire frame 44 is adjusted to the length of the staple tips desired by the following means. The wire frame 44 has a boss 45 (Figs. 5 and 6) into which is screwed the adjustment screw 46 which, at its other end, carries a knurled knob 47 gou looted on it.
The screw 46 is supported by its bulge 48 on the cap 49 fixed on the sewing head 1.
The wire frame 44 carries the thread advance members which are as follows (fig. 5, 6, 7): The wire frame 44 carries a cap 50 forming a pad for the shaft 51. The control pinion 52 can rotate freely on the axis 51 and carries, fixed on it, the -53 housing which has two symmetrical heels 54. The freewheel ratchet 55 fixed on the axle 51 is driven in one direction by the freewheel cage 56 via the rollers 57 pushed by the springs 58 (fig. 10). In the other direction, the cage 56 turns mad on the ratchet 55 without dragging it.
The freewheel cage 56 comprises two symmetrical cleats 59 which are located opposite the heels 54 of the housing 53. A spiral spring 60 bearing, on the one hand, at 61 on the housing 53 and, on the other hand, at 62 on the cage - 56, tends to keep in contact the heels 54 of the housing 53 and the cleats 59 of the cage 56. On the other hand, the freewheel cage 56 has a stop 63 which can rest on the end. 64 of an adjustment screw 65 carried by the wire frame 44. The purpose of the adjustment screw 65 is to bring the two points of the staple to exactly the same length when adjusting the machine.
Ratchet 55 and pin 51 rotate in bush 66 of wire frame 44. Ratchet 55 has a driver 67 which engages gear 68. Gear 68 carries, attached to it, the roller. advance 69. The assembly formed by the gear 68 and the roller 69, which is fixed against the ratchet 55 by the screw 70, turn therefore with the ratchet 55 and only in the direction of drive given by the freewheel, that is to say in the direction of advance of the wire.
The wire frame 44 (fig. 1 and 5) carries a pin 71 on which the lever 72 pivots. This lever 72 carries at one of its ends the pin 73 on which the gear 74 rotates, in engagement with the gear. 68, and which carries the roller 75. At the other end of the lever 72 acts the spring 76 which bears on the boss 77 of the wire frame 44. The key 78 is fixed on the axis 79 com carrying a cam 80 which can be supported on a boss 81 of the wire frame 44. The spring 76 has the effect of pivoting the lever 72 around the axis 71 and clamping the wire between the rollers 69 and 75. The key 78 allows, by the 'intermediary of the cam 80, to com primer the spring 76 and to separate the rollers 69 and 75 to allow the introduction of the wire into the machine.
The wire feed mechanism is controlled by the following means: The control slide 2 (fig. 1 and 3) carries a pin 82 on which the connecting rod 83 is articulated which transmits its movement to the lever in sector 84 by its axis 85. The sector lever 84 (fig. 6 and 7), whose axis 86 rotates in the sewing head 1, meshes with the intermediate pinion 87 which itself rotates on the axis 88 also carried by the head cutter 1. The pinion 87 in turn meshes with the rack 89 which slides in a groove of the sewing head 1 and which transmits its movement to the control pinion 52 (fig. 5).
The wire frame 44 also carries the wire cutting mechanism shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4. In the groove 90 made in the wire frame 44 can move a slide 91 which carries the rectangular shear 92 in which is formed the channel 93 in which the wire passes. The slide 91 is hand held in the groove by the bars 94 and 97 fixed to the wire frame 44. On the bar 94 is fixed the knife 95 which rests on the heel 96 of the bar 94. When the slide 91 rises, the wire which is in the channel 93 is sheared by the knife 95.
The movement of the smooth neck 91 is controlled by the part 98 which slides in a groove of the sewing head 1. The slide 91 has a heel 99 which is engaged in a groove 100 of the part 98. The smooth neck 91 receives therefore its movement regardless of its position relative to the part 98. The part 98 carries at its upper part a groove in which the latch 101 can move, held in position by the spring 102. On the other hand, the pin 86 of the sector lever 84 has a cam 103 and a socket 104. Finally, the shear 92 is extended by the thread guide 105 which has a fully closed duct 106 which thus completely guides the thread from its exit from the rollers 69 and 75 to 'with the shears 92 (fig. 1).
The advance of the wire, given by the centers of the control slide 2, is finished at bottom dead center, that is to say in the position of FIG. 2. The slide 2 goes up, driving the lever 84 and the pin 86.
The cam 103 comes into contact with the latch 101 and lifts the part 98 which causes the thread to be cut. On reaching the top dead center (fig. 1), the stop 107 carried by the pinion 87 comes into contact with the heel 108 of the part 98, forcing the latter to descend and, consequently, to open the shears for a new thread advance. But in this movement of the part 98, the latch 101 has come to be housed in the cell 104 of the axis 86 (FIG. 1).
During the movement in the opposite direction of the axis 86, the edge of this cell abuts on the end of the latch 101 and drives the latter without causing movement of the part 98. Then when the cam 103 has released its passage, the latch 101 pushed by the spring 102 re takes its position shown in FIG. 2 and it is ready to cut the thread.
The operation of the wire advance mechanism is as follows: The wire frame 44 being, for example, in a certain position and the control slide at top dead center, under the conditions of FIG. 6, the control slide 2, going down, turns the lever 84 and the pinion 87 which drives the rack 89 to the left of the figure. The rack 89 in turn drives the pinion 52 which is integral with the housing 53 (FIG. 5).
The box 53 (fig. 6) will therefore rotate, but in the first part of its rotation, its movement will have no other effect than to relax the spiral spring 60 which connects it to the freewheel cage 56.A from the moment when the heel 54 of the housing 53 comes into contact with the stopper 59 of the cage 56, the housing 53 will drive the cage 56 and the latter, by jamming the rollers 57 of the freewheel (fig. 10), will rotate ratchet 55 and feed roller 69 (fig. 5). This movement will occur until the control slide 2 reaches the bottom dead center (position of fig. 7). The wire feed will therefore occur not over the entire rotation of the housing 53, but only from the moment when the housing 53 drives the cage 56 by its heel 54.
This has been shown in the diagram of FIG. 8 where the angle of rotation of the housing 53 is shown at A and the angle of rotation of the cage 56 producing the advance of the wire is shown at B.
In the return stroke, the movements are made in the opposite direction (fig. 7). The housing 53 pulls on the cage 56 by the spiral spring 60 and drives it with it until the stop 63 of the cage 56 comes into contact with the stop screw 64. At this time, the cage 56 s' stops and the housing 53 continuing its movement tightens the spiral spring 60 until the control slide 2 reaches the top dead center (fig. 6). But, in the return movement of the cage 56, the freewheel rollers 57 become unstuck, and the ratchet 55 and the feed roller 69 remain stationary, the frictional forces due to the pressure on the roller 69 being much higher than those of the rollers 57 on the cage 56.
With regard to the diagram of fig. 8, it has been seen that the rotation of the housing 53 corresponds to the angle A, while the advance of the wire corresponds only to the angle B determined by the position of the heel 54 at the bottom dead center of the slide 2 and stop 64. It will now be assumed that the thread frame 44 is moved to obtain another flow of thread and that it is brought closer to the axis of the staple forming mechanism, as shown in the diagram of fig. 9.
The angle of rotation A of the housing 53 will always have the same amplitude as before, since the value of this angle is determined by the travel of the control slide 2 which is invariable. but the displacement of the wire frame 44 had the effect of rotating the pinion 52 on the 1st rack 89 by a certain angle C in the direction of the arrow.
The movement of the case 53 will therefore also be offset by this angle C with respect to the position of FIG. 8, while maintaining the same amplitude. The position of the heel 54 at the bottom dead center of the slide 2 having varied from the angle C and the stop having remained in the same place, the new angle Bl of advance of the wire becomes equal to the previous angle B minus l 'angle C.
But the angle C corresponds to a displacement of the wire frame equal to x. As the diameter of the feed roller 69 is double the pitch diameter of the pinion 52, the decrease C in the angle of rotation will correspond to a decrease in the feed of the wire by 2x, which is necessary so that the points of the new staple remain the same length.
The same reasoning can be made when the wire frame 44 moves away from the axis of the staple forming mechanism. The wire frame 44 finally carries the wire straightener which will be described below. The frame 44 com carries a boss -109 (Fig. 1) in which is fixed a wire guide 110 pierced with a conduit 111 through which the wire passes. The thread guide 110 com carries a cylindrical head 112 on which the frame of the straightener 113 is fixed. The frame 113 carries three cylindrical rollers 114 rotating on the pins 115 fixed in the frame 113. On the other hand, the frame 113 comprises a slide in which the slide 116 is located which can be adjusted by the knurled knob screw. 117.
The slide 116 carries two cylindrical rollers 118 rotating on the pins 119 fixed in the slide 116. This slide 116 is arranged so that its rollers 118 are inserted between the rollers 114 of the frame 113. Finally, the frame 113 carries a heel 120 in which is disposed a guide 121 for the entry of the wire. The wire, introduced into the guide 121, passes between the rollers 118 and 114 and then enters the guide 110 before reaching the feed rollers 69 and 75. The wire is straightened by acting on the button 117 which move the straightening rollers closer together. The re dresser frame 113 can rotate on the cylinder head 112 and is clamped in place by screw 122.
It can therefore be adjusted so that its straightening plane, determined by the plane of the rollers 118 and 114, coincides with the plane of curvature of the wire, whatever the position of the spool of wire. On the other hand, the rectifier frame is placed before the feed rollers 69 and 75, so that the latter pull on the wire which passes through the rectifier. Finally, the guide 121, the conduit 111 and the conduit 106 are in a straight line, so as to avoid bending the wire again after it has passed through the rectifier. The mechanism for forming the staple, shown in fig. 11 and 12, comprises a support 123 fixed on the sewing head 1. In a groove of the support 123 moves the mandrel 124 which has a groove 125 in which the thread arrives.
The wire is clamped by a clamp 126 movable around an axis 127 of the mandrel 124. The clamp 126 comprises a part forming a cam 128 and a heel 129. It is further pushed by the spring 130 which bears on the mandrel 124. A worm 131, movable in a groove of the mandrel 124 and pushed by the spring 132, can come above the heel 129 of the clamp 126 and hold the latter open.
The lock 131 is controlled by the lever 133 movable around the vertical axis 134 fixed in the mandrel. The lever 133 acts on the latch 131 by its arm 135 which engages in a groove made in the latch 131 and it receives its movement from a part 136 which slides in a groove 137 made in the sewing head 1. The part 136 com carries a buttonhole 138 and is controlled by a lug 139 fixed on the wire control rack 89, at each end of travel of said rack.
The part 136 can also come to be placed in front of the heel 140 of the mandrel 124, so as to prevent the latter from advancing under the effect of the spring 141 which constantly pushes the mandrel towards the elbows 31.
If we consider the mechanism in the position of the top dead center of the control slide 2, the mandrel 124 pushed by the spring 141 has its heel 140 released from the edge 144 of the support 123 which has been pushed back at the same time as the part 136 by the lug 139 of the rack 89. The groove 125 of the mandrel 124, in which there is a piece of wire, held by the clamp 126, is exactly below. grooves 31a of the elbow 31 (fig. 11).
These grooves are made in the elbows 31 vertically to form and hold the points of the grafe until they are inserted into the material to be stapled. The elbows 31 in their downward movement bend the wire, thus forming the two points of the staple.
The pusher 38 which slides in the grooves 31a of the elbow rods 31 also descends and when its inclined plane 142 comes into contact with the cam 128 of the clamp 126, the pusher 38 rotates the latter on its axis 127, and the beak of the clamp. pliers loose the back of the staple which is in the elbows 31. But in this movement, the heel 129 has come below the latch 131 and the latter, pushed by the spring 132, advances above the heel 129 , thus holding the clamp 126 open.
The pusher 38, continuing its stroke, moves the mandrel 124 back when its inclined plane 142 comes into contact with the inclined plane 143 of the mandrel 124, and thus brings the groove 125 of the mandrel in front of the duct 93 of the shear 92 (FIG. 1). The downward movement of the slide 28 carrying the elbow rods 31 and of the slide 35 carrying the pusher 38 continues until the three axes 18, 26 and 29 of the toggle are approximately aligned. At this moment, the slide 28 is stopped and the elbows 31 are in contact with the material to be stapled.
The movement of the slide 35 carrying the pusher 38 continues on its own and the pusher 38, pressing on the back of the clip, the points of which are in the grooves 31a of the elbow 31, pushes said points into the material to be stapled.
We have seen above that, in the downward movement of the slide 2, the wire advances, it will therefore enter the groove 125 of the mandrel 124 without being hampered by the clamp 126 which is open. At the end of the downward travel of the slide 2, corresponding to the end of the advance of the wire, the lug 139 of the rack 89 pushing on the part 136 forces the latter to act on the lever 133 which thus pushes the lock back. 131 towards the rear (fig. 12). In this movement, the latch 131 releases the heel 129 of the clamp 126 and the latter, pushed by the spring 130, clamps the wire which is in the groove 125 of the mandrel 124. But the part 136 has also come to be placed. in front of the heel 140 of the mandrel 124, preventing the latter from advancing under the effect of the spring 141.
At the start of the return stroke of the slide 2, the wire is cut as mentioned above, and the mandrel 124 holds by its clamp 126 a piece of wire intended for the next staple. At the end of the return stroke of the slide 2, the pusher 38 has released the cam 128 from the clamp 126 and the elbows are raised above the groove 125 of the mandrel 124, thus leaving the possibility for the unfolded piece of wire to pass below them. At the moment; the lug 139 of the creating mesh 89 acting on the end 145 of the part 136 moves the latter to the right and the mandrel 124, whose heel 140 is released, advances under the effect of the spring 141.
The mandrel 124 then comes to be placed in the initial position allowing the formation of a new staple.
It is easy to see that the above described machine has feed and cut mechanisms which occupy a fixed position with respect to each other, which has the effect that the wire can be guided positively. over the entire distance between these two mechanisms. If, as a result of imperfect straightening of the wire or a faulty cut as a result, for example, of shear wear, loops or deformations resulting from buckling of the wire tend to occur , they can only appear between the shears and the staple formers.
Now, at this point, the shears cutting the loops or parts which have undergone buckling, these loops or deformed parts of the wire can no longer cause the machine to engage. Likewise, in the machine shown, the actual displacement of the frame is used for both the wire feed and cutting mechanisms to adjust the length of wire necessary for making a staple, and this under conditions such as two staple tips are always both the same length. This particularly advantageous result is obtained by causing a given displacement of the frame to correspond to a variation in the length of the wire which is double this displacement.
In other words, if the frame moves away from the staple formers by an amount x, the length of wire fed increases by 2x, each of the points of the staple being increased by x.
While in all existing machines, the straightening of the wire is done by means of a fixed straightening apparatus which is placed either before the wire advancement mechanism, or after this mechanism, the plane in which it ensures the straightening therefore always remaining the same, while the plane in which the wire bends is variable depending on whether the axis of the coil of wire is vertical, horizontal or inclined, it follows that the straightening is done in a straightening manner. defective in a very large number of cases, and that the presence of the rectifier apparatus often only provides an illusory result. Furthermore,
in machines where the wire straightener is placed before the feed mechanism, the wire is guided, after the straightener, in a curved conduit which has the effect of bending again the wire which could have been straightened. In known machines where the rectifier is placed after the feed mechanism, the wire remains in a straight conduit, but as it is pushed towards the rectifier, that is to say is introduced into this rectifier by being pushed, it tends to buckle or form curls in the latter.
In the machine described above and shown, on the contrary, the wire straightener is orientable so that its straightening plane can be brought into coincidence with the plane of curvature of the wire, at the will of the operator of the machine and whatever the position of the axis of the wire spool in space.
On the other hand, the rectifier is placed before the advance mechanism. and so that the latter pulls on the wire which passes through the rectifier. By this means, buckling of the wire is avoided and from the moment when the wire leaves the straightener and until the moment when it arrives in the members for forming the staple, it passes through positive guide conduits, all arranged following the same straight line.
We know that there are, on the other hand, stapling machines in which the movements of all the organs which participate in the formation of the staple derive from a single reciprocating movement, obtained either by an eccentric or by a lever, a slide, a cam or any other equivalent slow mechanism providing a reciprocating movement. In existing stapling machines with this particularity, the wire bending and staple driving members always descend at the same distance, set in advance, from the bigorne on which the work to be stapled is placed. These machines therefore do not allow variations in the thickness of the structure.
They are also machines that only allow relatively simple work and which, in particular, do not adapt to the stapling of books or materials whose thickness may vary accidentally, as is the case, for example, in unrolled wooden boxes where it may happen that the thickness of the sheets of wood varies and where it may happen, by coincidence, that we have to staple together two exceptionally thin or exceptionally thick parts every of them.
Such variations in the thickness of the work to be stapled, even when they are not very large when considered individually, may become too large to allow proper operation of known staplers in which the forming members and of insertion of the clip always descend at the same distance from the bigorne. Because if, due to an excessive thickness of the elements to be stapled, these members do not descend with respect to the bigorne, at the distance for which they are set, the operation of the stapler is interrupted as a result of the blocking of the organs. movable stapler and the formation of the staple on the elements to be stapled or the timing of the stapler drive motor.
