Direction indicator for motor vehicle. The subject of the invention is a direction indicator for a motor vehicle, of the type with electromagnetic control and the design and arrangement of which are such as to considerably reduce the consumption of current during the period of normal operation.
This direction indicator is characterized by the fact that it comprises an electromagnet controlling the movement of the signaling arm, an automatic return switch making it possible to close the circuit of said electromagnet on a source of electrical energy, and a thermal switch subjected to the influence of the heating of a resistor through which the current circulating in the electromagnet flows and which, after the lifting of said arm, is automatically activated to cause the reduction of the current , circulating in the electromagnet, this resistor being switched off after a time determined by said thermal switch.
The control member and the switches of the switch are preferably established so as to ensure automatic operation of the signaling arm and also to avoid the simultaneous activation of the two arms placed on either side of the vehicle.
According to a preferred embodiment, the direction indicator also includes the use of a locking finger holding the arm in its rest position as long as the electromagnet is not energized. The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is an overall view thereof, in vertical section, the signal arm being in its rest position.
Fig. 2 is a similar partial view, showing the arm in its signaling position.
The device shown comprises an electromagnet, the movable armature a of which is guided in brackets b and e fixed to a fixed support d, by which the magnetic circuit closes. The frame cc is extended by a rod al guided in the upper bracket c and carrying at its upper end a plate e. Around the frame is a winding.
f connected, on the one hand, to the mass at, cl and, on the other hand, to a switch (the maneuver h connected to a battery i, itself grounded at j. A fixed stop d ', in non-magnetic material, limits the downward stroke of the mobile armature a.
The mobile box k, constituting the envelope of the signaling arm, is articulated on a fixed axis 1. integral with the support d. It comprises, in the usual manner, a lamp m fixed between elastic supports, one of which is. connected to ground, while the other is isolated and connected to the circuit by a conductor n .. On either side of the lamp m, the box has windows closed by colored transparent plates. The box k is. crossed by a pin o which can act on the plate e carried by the upper end of the rod al of the mobile armature of the electromagnet. On one of the sides of the box k is also fixed a finger p forming. locking finger.
The device is completed by an automatic switch consisting of a bimetallic strip q, fixed to the support d, surrounded by a resistor r connected in the general circuit and extended by an elastic strip qÚ carrying, at its free end, a contact arranged from so as to be able to cooperate with another contact fixed on a strip s which is also fixed to the support d and connected to the switch h, as is shown in FIG. 1. The blade qÚ presses on a movable finger t capable of sliding in the support d and on which acts, in the rest position, the locking finger p carried by the mobile housing kc.
At the upper end of the box is also fixed a blade u connected to the conductor n of the lamp and which comes into contact with the strip s when the arm is raised in the signaling position, so as to switch on the lamp m .
The control switch h operates automatically and for this purpose is subjected to the action of a spring tending to bring it constantly into the neutral position (position shown in fig. 1). This switch controls, by means of two opposite studs hÚ-hÚ, a signal arm located on one side of the vehicle and, by means of two other opposite studs hê-h2, the signal arm placed on the other side of the vehicle. vehicle. In fig. 1, v represents the two conductors connecting the he-he pads to the circuit of the electromagnet of the second signaling arm.
The operation of the indicator is as follows: With switch h brought to the position indicated at I in fig. 1, the current of the battery i passes through the winding f of the electromagnet, which thus lifts the armature a-aÚ and the plate e which, pushing back the pin o of the box k, rotates the latter around its articulation axis 1 and the hand is held raised in the position shown in fig. 2 in which the lamella u makes contact. with the blade S. During this movement, the locking finger p integral with the housing k releases the mobile finger t, so that the elastic blade qÚ can push back this finger and come into contact with the strip S, which turns on the lamp mn and doubly closes the circuit of the electromagnet.
The arm of the comnui- tator h being released, returns to the neutral position under the action of its spring, but the circuit of the electromagnet remains closed by the blades q il and s, as has been said. above. During this closing of the general circuit, the bimetallic strip q heats up under the influence of the heat given off by the resistor r which surrounds it and which is traversed by the current of the electromagnet; this blade is deformed and, after a time determined by the characteristics of this bimetallic wool, the deformation is such that the contact.
automatically breaks between slats q1 and s, the lamp 7n goes out, the box h: falls down by its own weight, the locking finger p returns to take its place in front of the moving finger t, maintains the blade q1 in the position away from the blade s and also locks the signaling arm by the stop against the plate e of the armature a, of the electromagnet.
An operation in the opposite direction of the switch h, bringing it into position II, similarly causes the automatic control of the second signaling arm placed on the opposite side of the vehicle.
As seen in fi-. 1, the arrangement of the pads htl-lt.l and 1 = -h2 of the pressure switch is such that the current is automatically. cut in the thermal switch q-ql if the arm maneuvers are performed so quickly that the contacts between q1 and s do not have time to open due to the remanent magnetization of the electromagnet and the time it is before the thermal switch can operate and cause the current to break.
This is why the upper pads 1z = and hl of the switch are slightly apart from each other, in order to mechanically switch off the electromagnet.
It will be noted that, thanks to the interruption (read current by the automatic return of the switch, the consumption of the current which supplies the electromagnet during almost the entire operation is considerably reduced due to the presence, in the circuit, of the resistance r of the bi-metallic blade, the consumption in normal operation then being only about a fifth of the current consumed when the device is started.
The device also has the advantage of not comprising any mechanical transmission by connecting rods and levers, the control of the electromagnet being effected directly on the signaling arm.
The thermal switch which has been described could be omitted, by simply providing on the movable part of the signaling arm a contact which, when this arm arrives in its normal operating position, would produce the automatic switching on of the resistor. current reduction. In this case, the fall of the arm would no longer be automatic and would have to be caused by an operation of the control switch.
