Process for removing monomeric lactam from polyamide. It is known that polymers of e-caprolactam still contain 1.0 to 12% low molecular weight fractions consisting of monomeric, dimeric and trimeric e-caprolactam. It is essential to remove these substances as far as possible before spinning, since excessive extract content of the spun threads leads to difficulties in the twisting process.
To remove the low molecular weight fractions from the polymer, two approaches have been taken up to now: 1. Vacuum evaporation from the melted lIasse, 2. extraction of the stranded material with water. In the first process, the Laetam content could only be reduced to .1 to 6%, which far exceeded the limit of 2% permitted for the production of polyamide silk.
The second process, extraction with water, is not only time-consuming, but also requires extensive equipment for comminuting the solid polyamide and for recovering the extracted lactam, which is obtained in a very dilute solution. The extracted schnitzel contains 10 to 15% water, which must be completely removed before further processing. A lengthy drying process is necessary here.
It has now been found that the process for the production of spinnable material from polymers of ring-shaped latamen can be significantly simplified if, according to the invention, the solid material, e.g. B. in the form of chips or ribbons, in the absence of oxygen to tempera tures of 130 to 200, preferably 180, is heated. At this temperature, the monomeric lactam evaporates, and he holds a polyamide whose content of low molecular weight substances is reduced to 2 to 3.5 b 'and whose water content at the same time has the desired value of 0.17o or less.
It was surprising that the material treated by the process according to the invention, despite the higher content of low molecular weight substances, does not behave worse than chips with a content of 1 to 2% of such substances as are obtained by extraction with water during spinning and drawing .
The reason is to be found in the fact that the low molecular weight fractions remaining in the material after the treatment according to the invention consist practically only of dimeric and trimeric lactam which, as experiments have shown, do not interfere with the spinning and drawing process.
The heating is expediently carried out in a vacuum or in a stream of completely oxygen-free nitrogen at atmospheric pressure. In the latter case, it is advisable to maintain a slight overpressure of a few centimeters of water column, so that any penetration of air into the dryer is carefully avoided. The nitrogen can be circulated in the usual way via a cooler in which the vaporized Lactani is condensed. The distilled lactam is of such high purity that it can be polymerized without further purification.
The dryer is advantageously heated by a steam jacket or a pipe system that is charged with dichlorobenzene vapor, or by supplying the necessary heat with a superheated nitrogen stream.
Heating by means of ultra-red rays or high frequency has proven to be very advantageous, since this accelerates the distillation of the lactam immensely.
When treating chips, it is also useful to ensure good circulation of the same by using a rotating drum, a screw conveyor or a belt dryer, so that completely uniform material is obtained.
Chips treated according to the invention can be fed to a melting device and spun without further treatment.
Example: 100 kg chips made from a polymer of E-caprolactam with a content of 11.5J of low molecular weight components and 0.4% water content were in a rotating drum dryer in a stream of purified nitrogen (oxygen content <0.003%) and 0.05 atm Pressure heated to 180 "by a fixed, electrically heated tube system.
In the course of 15 hours, 8 kg of monomeric lactam distilled off, while 2.8 7, extract content and 0.087 water were found in the pure white chips. Without any further treatment, these chips were spun into cord silk Nm 34 with an average tensile strength of 59.5 km and 15.6% elongation.
