Process for producing a composite body and composite bodies produced therefrom. The present invention relates to the production of composite bodies whose individual parts are glued to one another by means of a phenol-aldehyde condensation product and relates in particular to the production of panels, e.g. B. made of wood or cork, with a metal cladding on one or both sides.
The method according to the invention for producing a composite body with individual parts united by an adhesive is characterized in that a hardenable phenol-Al, dehydrogenate condensation product in solid form and an organic substance are introduced between the surfaces to be adhered to one another In the cold state, a solution or softening effect on the condensation product:
exerts., puts the whole thing under pressure while heating until the adhesive flows, and then the condensation product hardens.
Thanks to this procedure it is. It is possible to achieve a good adhesive effect between the surfaces of materials which up to now could only be combined with one another only slightly, or not at all, by means of condensation products of the aforementioned type.
Liquid solvents are preferably used as organic substances with a dissolving or softening effect on the condensation products mentioned. or low volatility emollients, d. H. with a boiling point of 2100 C or higher is used. E "5 has.
It has been shown that a number of plasticizers for cellulose esters give excellent results. In particular, the aliphatic esters of phosphoric acid should be mentioned here, which contain no more than four carbon atoms in the aliphatic radical, e.g.
B. tributyl phosphate and especially triethyl phosphate and trimethyl phosphate; also the E: ssig- säureester of glycerol, z.
B. monoacetin, diatetin and triacetin. Other suitable substances are 1,3-butylene glycol diacetate. the monobutyl ether of diethylene glycol and benzyl alcohol. Instead of a single solvent or softening substance, mixtures of two or more such substances can also be used. Desired folders can also be used in connection with the solution:
or softening substance use a substance without a dissolving or softening effect.
The solvent or softening substance can be brought between the surfaces to be united by applying it to one or both of these surfaces and to one or both surfaces of the solid condensation product before hot pressing.
Usually it has been found satisfactory to apply the solvent or emollient in an amount of 61 to 176g to 10 m2 of contact area between the surfaces to be joined together. The solvent or softening substance can also be incorporated into the condensation product, e.g.
B. skin during the production of a glue. In this case, however, it will be difficult to incorporate the solvent or softening substance into the product in sufficient quantity to bond moisture-free surfaces together without making the handling of the solid condensation product too difficult.
The invention is particularly valuable for joining metals with wood, resin-impregnated wood (including resin-impregnated Fournier or plywood), cork, rubber or other non-metallic materials or with metals.
Composite bodies made of metal with glued-on wood, cork or the like are of great importance today, especially in the construction of aircraft, in building construction and in the motor vehicle industries. In the meantime, difficulties have arisen in achieving a satisfactory bond between these materia lien by means of the phenol-aldehyde resins.
The metals in the electrochemical series under the hydrogen and in particular those that form a strongly adherent coating in the air, such as. B. Aluminum and its alloys, a metal coated with aluminum, iron or steel (including stainless steel), nickel-copper alloys, nickel or tin (including tinplate)
do not require any significant surface pretreatment except for the removal of grease: and dirt and, in the case of polished surfaces, a roughening, e.g. B. by peeling off with glass paper or emery cloth, by means of the sandblasting blower or by etching. No roughening is required for aluminum with an anodised surface.
It is clear that in the case of metals, which form a visibly waxy coating in the air, this must be removed. Although it may be sufficient in some cases to use the surface of zinc or a surface coated with zinc, e.g.
B. degrease the surface of galvanized iron, and lightly sand the surface. To remove a weakly adhering coating and to roughen the surface, it is often desirable for the latter purposes to chemically etch the surface, z. B. by treatment with a ten percent sulfuric acid solution and subsequent washing.
Difficulties can also arise when the lead and wood are glued together because the lead then appears to have a tendency to form weakly adherent coatings due to corrosion even during setting. This difficulty can, however, be remedied by using wood with a moisture content of less than 7%. Lead alloys remain corrosion-resistant, e.g.
B. an alloy of lead with 5.5% tin and 5% bismuth with or without antimony, from which metal packaging can be made, whereby a more reliable bond is obtained than with lead alone.
For the polished surface of copper, which lies above hydrogen in the electrochemical series, a more thorough surface treatment than mere scraping or light chemical etching seems to be required. It has proven necessary to etch the polished surfaces deeply by chemical treatment. Be known suitable etching solutions are aqueous solutions which contain ammonia and hydrogen peroxide or ferric chloride and hydrochloric acid.
All loose deposits that remain on the surface after etching must be carefully removed. Less difficulties have been found in order to achieve good adhesion in alloys of copper, e.g. B. with brass or bronze. Arsenic copper with an arsenic content of z.
B. 0.3 to 0.5% can also be glued in a satisfactory manner, metals which develop a weakly adhering coating can be used according to the method according to the invention, u, m, by adhesion these transferring adherent coating to the surface of plywood or other materials.
The coatings so transferred may be used for decorative purposes or for their electrical properties, or both. So z. B. a copper sheet to be heated to high temperature to form an oxide skin and the oxide skin transferred by the fiction, contemporary method from copper to plywood or another surface who the.
The oxide skin adheres well to the condensation product applied between it and the plywood or another surface during the pressing process, whereupon the metal sheet is pulled off, leaving the oxide skin behind.
Thanks to the method according to the invention, it is also possible to combine a material consisting of a completely hardened synthetic resin with the same material or wood or metal of the type mentioned above. So z. B. Leaves made of phenol-formaldehyde resin or of urea-formaldehyde resin can be bonded to wood, and such leaves can be coated with an oxide skin in the manner indicated above. are covered.
However, resin sheets should be pretreated, e.g. B. by light sanding from or sandblasting to be roughened.
As an adhesive, a condensation product of a phenol and 'an aldehyde can be used, which can be cured by heating, eg. B. Condensation products from phenol or cresol and formaldehyde. The condensation product is preferably used in the form of a solid film which is formed by impregnating a thin layer of fiber material, e.g. B.
Silk paper with which the condensation product is kept. A single film of medium weight (tissue paper impregnated with the condensation product of phenol and formaldehyde) between each pair of the surfaces to be united is usually sufficient for joining metal with wood or wood with wood, while for joining metal with metal, preferably two such films used turn.
In order to increase the toughness of the resin bond when combining metal with another metal or a non-metallic material, it is advantageous to place a layer of fiber material between the adhesive layer and the non-metallic surface or between two adhesive layers when joining metal with metal. etch tissue paper or z-veckmässigerw eise knitted or woven fabric, z.
B. fine gauze to insert. Instead, it is also advantageous to connect metal to metal by inserting a thin rubber sheet or the like between the two layers of adhesive, the solvent or softening substance preferably being applied to the two metal surfaces to be joined.
In general, when combining metal with wood or wood with wood in a flat press, the pressure can be the same as that normally used for the same type of wood in the manufacture of plywood. So z. B. for the union of birch wood with duralumin or an aluminum-coated aluminum alloy a pressure of 14 to 1.6 kg / em2 can be used. For softer wood, such as fir or spruce, a pressure of 7 kg / cm 'may be sufficient, while for cork a lower pressure, such as 0.7 kg "em" is sufficient.
To connect. Metal with metal can have higher pressures, e.g. B. of 42 kg / em 'may be necessary in order to exercise all surface roughness which could prevent good adhesion between surfaces to be united. When using liquid pressure, e.g. B. in an autoclave process, as it is usually used for the production of composite bodies of uneven thickness, it is often possible to work with lower pressures, for.
B: 3; 5 kg per cm @ contact surface for wood, such as B. birch wood.
The temperature used for wax pressing is usually somewhat lower than that required when using the same adhesives without the addition of a solvent or emollient. So are z. B. good results have been achieved with temperatures of 115 to 12.5 C; however, temperatures of up to 150 C may be desirable in order to achieve magical adhesion between rubber and metal.
If metal sheets of large dimensions are to be combined with materials such as wood with very different expansion coefficients, corrugations or bubbles can result because the metal is pressed during the pressing process. is clamped between this material and the press and therefore does not expand freely during hot pressing. can.
In order to remedy or reduce these difficulties @, shortly after closing the press, approximately after 15 seconds, the pressure can be released for a moment. A metal mesh can also be used for pressing. the metal to be glued and the adjacent surface of the press are inserted.
The metal net is expediently made of a metal with a higher coefficient of expansion than the metal to be bonded, and expediently has a greater thickness than the metal sheets to be glued. When gluing aluminum to wood, zinc nets have given good results.
The slight warping that occurs when plywood or Fournier is covered with metal on only one side by hot pressing is less with ash wood than with birch wood.
The following are. some exemplary embodiments of the method according to the invention are given: Example 1: An aluminum sheet is combined with a birch plywood panel in the following way:
The aluminum surface that joins the sparrow wood laths must be cleaned of grease and lightly roughened. The roughened surface is then coated with 120 g of triethylphosphate per 10 m2 of surface.
A sheet of tissue paper impregnated with a heat-curable phenol-formaldehyde% co @ ndensationsprodukt is then placed on the coated surface of the aluminum sheet, and the plywood sheet with: the aluminum sheet and the adhesive film between them is placed between zinc nets.
The whole thing is:: then brought into the press and pressed at 12 ° C for about 20 minutes with 14 kg / cm @. The bond between aluminum and plywood is firm and rot-proof and moisture-proof.
Example 2: A galvanized iron sheet is etched for one minute with a 10% sulfuric acid solution with an addition of 1% normal butyl alcohol as a wetting agent. The etched sheet is then rinsed and dried to remove the acid.
The sheet metal will, then. coated with triethyl phosphate in an amount of 120 g on 10 m @ surface and using a sheet of tissue paper impregnated with a phenol-formaldehyde $ orudensation product in the same way as described in the first lead example for .the combination of aluminum with plywood , glued to a birch plywood panel.
Beisel 3: An aluminum sheet is combined with a pressed cork plate 25 mm thick in the same way as described in Example 1 for birch plywood, except that with: the hot pressing a pressure of only 0.7 kg /.cm 'surface is used.
