Instrument for writing. There are presently a host of ink writing instruments of various types and constructions. All these stylographs or "pens" have a tip connected by a channel to an ink reservoir. The stylograph tip is protected by a cap protecting it from dust. When the user wishes to use the stylograph, he is obliged to remove said cap, which necessitates the use of both hands. In addition, the user always risks losing the capu chon during his writing or drawing work.
The present invention relates to a writing instrument, comprising a tapered casing at one of its ends and protecting a stylograph having a body provided with a writing tip, connected by a channel to an ink reservoir, a mechanism being provided to update and retract the tip of the stylograph used for writing. This instrument differs from those known to date, by the fact that the tapered end of the casing is for view of a device giving passage to the tip of the stylograph used for writing, on the one hand, and causing, on the other hand, automatically the closing of the tapered end of the envelope when the tip of the stylograph is retracted.
The accompanying drawing shows, diagrammatically and by way of example, three embodiments of the writing instrument. Fig. 1 is an exterior view of a first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is an axial sectional view thereof, the tip of the stylograph being exposed. Fig. 3 is an axial view thereof, the tip of the stylograph being retracted.
The. fig. 4 and 5 are views in axial section of a second embodiment. Fig. 6 is a sectional view along the line VI-VI of FIG. 5.
According to the embodiment shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the writing instrument has an envelope 1 tapered at one of its ends and enclosing a stylograph. The latter has a body 2 comprising a tapered end 3 carrying at its anterior end a writing tip consisting of a ball 4. The latter is connected by a channel, not shown, to an unrepresented cre reservoir, housed in the ball. body 2.
The rear end of the body 2 carries an operating member 6 emerging from the casing 1 and allowing the stylograph to be actuated against the action of a return spring 7. The latter is supported on the casing 1 by one of the ends and acts by its other end on a shoulder 8 of the body 2.
A lock is provided to keep the tip for writing in the working position (position shown in FIG. 2) against the action of the return spring 7. This lock comprises a ball 10 subjected to the action of a spring. 9 which tends to engage the latter in a recess 11 made in the wall of the casing 1.
The tapered end of the casing 1 is provided with a device giving passage to the tip of the stylograph and automatically causing, when said tip is retracted, the closing of the orifice giving passage to this tip. This device comprises slots 12 made in the tapered part of the casing, so as to give the remaining parts 13 which constitute the grippers sufficient elasticity so that, on the one hand, in the retracted position of the stylograph (fig. 1). and 3), the end of the envelope is closed, and that, on the other hand, the tip of the stylograph in the working position (fig. 2) can emerge from the envelope 1.
The operation of the instrument described is as follows: When the user is not using the graph pen, it is in the eclipsed position and the envelope is closed on all sides. When the user wishes to write, it suffices for him to exert a thrust on the actuator 6 while firmly holding the envelope 1, so as to move the stylograph, relative to the envelope, against the action of the spring 7 and cause its tip 4 to emerge from the tapered end of the casing, the clamps 13 of which elastically move apart under the pressure exerted by the stylograph and give passage to the tip 4 of the latter .
When the ball 10 passes in front of the recess 11 of the casing 1, it engages in this recess and is held in the latter by the action of the spring 9.
As shown in fig. 2, this ball engaged partly in the recess of the casing and partly in a housing 14 of the man # uvr # 6 constitutes a lock tending to immobilize the graphing pen in the working position relative to the envelope 1.
To retract the tip of the stylograph, the user exerts a thrust on the ball 10 against the action of the spring 9 so as to liberate the operating member 6. As of long, the latter, actuated by the spring 7, moves to the position shown in fig. 3, causing the stylogra phe in its displacement. During this movement, the clamps 13, the inherent elasticity of which tends to hold them in closed positions with respect to each other (fig. 1), slide along the tapered end 3 of the stylograph and close again. ment under the influence of their own elasticity.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 to 6, the writing instrument comprises an envelope 1 protecting a stylograph of the same type as that shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.
The rear end of the body 2 of the stylograph is made integral with a rack 15. The latter is rigidly fixed to the internal wall of the casing 1 by any known means, so that the axial position of the stylograph relative to the The envelope is fixed.
The device giving passage to the tip 4 of the stylograph and automatically causing, during the retraction of said tip, the closing of the tapered end of the casing is constituted here by a sliding member comprising a portion 16 approximately. cylindrical event terminating in tapered grippers 17 emerging from the tapered end of the casing.
These clamps 17 are provided so that in the closed position (Fig. 5), they completely envelop the tapered end 3 and the tip 4 of the stylogra: phe emerging from the tapered end of the envelope 1.
The taper of these clamps 17 corresponds to that of the tapered part of the casing 1. The rear end of the part 16 of the sliding member carries claws 18 in which the ends of the connecting members 19 are engaged, of which . the other ends are engaged in housings 20 made in the operating member 6. These connecting members slide and are guided in channels 21 formed in the ring 15.
The return spring 7 is supported by one of its ends on the ring 15, while its other end exerts a thrust on the operating member 6. A lock similar to that described with reference to FIGS. . 1 to 3 is placed in a housing 14 of the operating member 6 and cooperates with a recess 11 of the casing 1.
In this embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 to 6, the parts of the writing instrument normally occupy the relative positions shown in FIG. 5. It can be seen that the pliers 17 completely block the orifice made in the tapered end of the casing, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, all around and protect the tip 4 of the stylograph emerging from envelope 1. When the user wishes to write, all he has to do is push the ball 10 against the action of its spring 9 so as to release the two parts of the lock and to free the operating organ 6 .
The latter is pushed back, by the spring 7, into the position shown in FIG. 4 and drives the sliding member in its displacement. The clamps 17 slide along the tapered end 4 of the stylograph, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, along the internal wall of the tapered part of the casing. These elastically separating clamps 17 give passage to the tip 4 of the silylograph.
The axial movement of the actuator 6 is limited by the engagement of the front face 23 of the sliding member with the front face 24 of the ring 15.
To eclipse the tip 4 of the stylograph, the user exerts a thrust on the operating member 6 and moves the latter against the action of the spring 7. During this movement, the clamps 17 slide along the inner wall of the tapered part of the envelope and automatically close on the tip 4 of the stylograph.
The ball 10 engaging in the recess 11 tends to keep the clamps 17 in the advanced position against the action of the spring 7.
Two embodiments of the instrument which is the subject of the invention have been described here, by way of example and with reference to the appended schematic drawing, but it is clear that all the components and elements described can without further be replaced by their equivalents. In particular, it is possible to replace the stylograple represented by a stylograph, the tip of which is constituted by a glass or porcelain member, or even by a metal nozzle.
