Talking machine equipped with a device for detecting the diameter of a disc. Various types of talking machines with automatic disc change and disc stack carried by supports are already known, which have devices for detecting the diameter of the disc to be played. Nevertheless, these devices are generally quite delicate and do not always give complete satisfaction.
The subject of the invention is a talking machine provided with a device for detecting the diameter of a disc, this machine being of the type with automatic change of discs and with a stack of discs arranged above and parallel to the turntable. , carried by solid supports of rotating lateral columns, the latter being driven in a rotational movement by a motor to cause the fall of the lower -disc of the stack.
Said drive dies side columns is advantageously controlled by the arm of the pick-up entering the -dernière groove of a disc.
With a view to making it possible to place discs of different diameters in the stack of discs, certain manufacturers have proposed to equip machines with this type of devices for detecting the diameter of the disc falling on the plate.
For this purpose, some have provided a feeler arranged on the periphery of the disc holder plate and above the latter, between the stack of discs and the disc holder plate. This feeler is arranged so as to be pushed back by the discs falling on the plate. The movement of this feeler, which is a function of the diameter of the disc to be played, determines the position of the members controlling the movement of the pick-up coming to be placed in the first groove of the disc to be played.
In these machines, it is therefore the disc which actuates the members-for positioning the control members-of the pick-up arm. This command must generally be carried out by means of a spring relay, for example. Now, this spring having to be reset by the motor of the machine during the cycle of the operations necessary for changing the disc, cannot always be provided sufficiently strong for safe operation of the detection device.
Other manufacturers have proposed detection of the diameter of the discs to be played by means of a feeler actuated by the motor of the machine, so as to come shortly before the fall of the lower disc of the stack of discs in contact with the periphery of the machine. this last.
In principle, these devices are satisfactory. However, detection errors can occur when the discs show some warping. In this case, due to the fact that the probes are arranged between the two disc supports, it may happen that the probe is stopped by the edge of the second disc of the stack and not by the edge of the lower disc. In this case, if the lower disc is of a smaller diameter than the second disc, it is clear that the pick-up goes down in deh ors: from the disc to be played.
Other machines have a feeler fixed on a rotating column, and constituted by an arm provided at its end with a finger, subjected to the action of a spring tending to make it emerge upwards. The arm is actuated by the motor of the machine, so that its finger comes against the underside of the stack of discs at a distance: from the center of the upper disc to the radius of a small disc. If the lower disc of the stack is a disc of large diameter, the probe finger is pushed back by the: lower face of this disc.
The position of this finger then determines the position of the members for controlling the movements of the pick-up arm. This detection device: however, is not capable of reliably detecting <B> the </B> diameter of the discs to be played when these present a strong warping. since the feeler touches the disc at a point located outside the side supports of the stack.
The machine forming the subject of the invention eliminates the drawbacks mentioned by the fact that it comprises at least one feeler member mounted on at least one of the supports and, subjected to an action tending to push it.

The playing discs are carried by .supports 9 integral with rotating side columns 10. For greater clarity, a single column 10 is shown in the drawing, the second being arranged symmetrically with respect to the drive axis of the door plate. -disks.
The control of these columns is effected by a crank 11 carried by the axis 8 and having a finger 12 engaged in a slot 13 formed in a lever 14 pivoted at 15 on a fixed part. The finger 12 actuates the lever 14 in an oscillating movement. A lug 16, integral with a rod 17, is engaged in the slot 13. This rod is articulated on a lever 18 integral with the vertical axis of the column 10, pivoted inside a housing 19. The lever 14 and the lug 16 constitute the two parts of a coupling mechanically connecting the my level 11 to the axis of the column 10. This axis carries one of the supports 9.
A mechanical connection (not shown) connects the axis of column 10 to that of the column arranged on the same diameter on the other side of the drive axis of the disc holder plate.
The lever 14 has a recess 21 intended to allow its oscillation without dragging the lug 16, so as to eliminate the control of the columns with a view to repeating a disc. A maneuvering member (not shown) allows the rod 17 to oscillate around its articulation - so as to bring the lug 16 into the recess 21.
The pick-up arm (not shown). Is articulated on a horizontal axis (not shown) rigidly fixed to the upper end - of an axis 22 pivoted in a fixed part. This pin carries an arm 23 at the end of which a finger 24 is fixed. The latter is intended to engage the profile of a cam 25 integral with the pin 8. This cam 25, by pushing back the finger 24, causes the pick-up to <B> move sideways </B> which takes it out of the played disc. This operation completed, a cam 26 acts through its internal profile on the finger 24 so as to train the pick-up above the first groove of the disc to be played.
For greater clarity of the drawing, the control members -du raising. And lowering the pick-up are not shown, this members being already known. In fact, they consist of a rod sliding inside the axis 22 and on the upper end of which the pick-up arm rests. The axis 22 rests on an inclined plane fixed on one end of a lever pivoted on a fixed part and the other end of which is maintained in contact with the profile of a cam (not shown) fixed on the tree 8.
The upper end of the sliding rod acts on the arm of the. pick-up and its height determine the height position of the pick-up in relation to the disc carrier.
To allow the use of .discs of different diameters, it is necessary to provide a device for detecting the .diameter of the disc. play, which provokes and -determines the placement of the control-organs. the return lateral movement of the pick-up over the first stripe of a record as a function of the diameter of the record to be played.
The detection device included in the machine shown allows the use of discs having two different diameters, for example 25 cm discs and 30 cm discs. This device is constituted by a feeler 28 pivoted at 29 on one of the supports 9 along an axis approximately parallel to the surface of the latter. This probe is subjected to the action of a spring 30 which tends to cause 9 key protruding parts 31 and 32 of the probe to emerge above the upper surface of the support through openings 33 and 34 made in the support 9.
The protrusion 32 emerges first and the protrusion 31 second. It is clear that these protrusions could also emerge on the edge of the support 9.
The probe 2.8 carries a drive member 35 intended to engage, then. . of the rotational movement of column 10 in the anti-clockwise direction causing the fall of the lower disc, with a finger 37 carried by a member 38 pi voted crazy on the axis of the column 10. This member carries a second finger 39 fixed to its lower part and which actuates an arm 40 pivoted crazy on the lower part of the axis of the column 10. On the end of this arm is. articulated one of the ends of a rod 41 which in turn actuates an intermediate member consisting of a lever 42 with two arms.
For this purpose, the other end of this rod 41 is articulated on one of the arms of the lever 42 pivoted at 43 on a fixed part. The second arm of this lever carries a finger 44 and a surface 45 & stinée to cooperate with the finger 24. A spring (not shown) tends to maintain this lever in the position shown in solid lines in fi, -. 1.
The operation of this <B> detection </B> device is as follows: Depending on the diameter of the disc resting on the supports 9, the probe occupies one of the positions shown in FIGS. 3 and 4. When a 30 cm disc rests on the support, its weight pushes the feeler against the action of its return spring 30 by acting on the projection 32. In this bus, the member of drive 35 drives the finger. 37, during the rotational movement of the column 10. The finger 37 in turn drives the lever 42.
In the rest position of the columns, the finger 3 7 occupies the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 1. It is held in this position by two opposing springs (not shown). The rotation of the column 10 brings it to the position shown in phantom. To arrive in this last position, the finger 37 has caused an angular displacement of the lever 42 by aa. position indicated in solid lines, at its position indicated in phantom lines. In this last position, the finger 44 cooperates with the outer circular profile of the cam 26.
It should be noted that the. angular position of the axis 8 shown corresponds to its rest position, that is to say to the. position it occupies when listening to a record. Thus, when the feeler 28 causes the movement of the lever 42, the cam 26 has already performed an angular movement, so that its end 46 is no longer in the path of the finger 44.
The feeler maintains the lever 42 in the position indicated in phantom lines at least until the cam -96 has turned by one year, the c sufficient for its beak 53 to come opposite the finger: 44.
At this moment, the lower 30 etn disc has fallen on the plate and the columns are driven in a rotational movement in the opposite direction intended to bring them back to their rest position, in order to lay the stack of discs again on them. support; 9. A separator finger 20, the operation of which is not described, supports the discs during the fall of the lower disc.
This separator 20 is similar to those already used on known disc changers. During the return of the columns to their rest position, the internal profile of the cam 26 pushes the finger 24 inwards. This profile is determined so as to bring the pick-up above the first ridge of a 30 cm disc.
When the lower disc is a 25 cm disc (fig. 4), the driver 35 passes over the finger <B> 37. </B> During the. rotation of the columns, the latter is therefore not trailing and the finger 44 of the lever 42 falls inwardly, from the position shown in phantom to the position shown in solid lines, as soon as the. cam 26 escapes finger 44. In this case, the internal profile of cam 26 acts on finger 24 through finger 44 and surface 45. The lever arms are chosen so as to return the pick- up above the first streak of a 25 cm disc.
When a 30 cm disc rests on the support 9, the angular displacement of the column intended to cause the disc to fall, brings the projection 32 outside the area occupied by this disc. In order to avoid raising the probe which would result in the. removal of the drive of the finger 37, the part 35 is provided with a spout 36 which engages under the finger <B> 37. </B> When a 25 cm disc rests on the supports 9, the raising of the feeler, during the angular displacement of the columns, is caught by a bearing surface 48 engaging under a pin 49 fixed to the housing 19 (FIG. 2).
The latter is arranged so as to limit the raising of the probe to a low value. This clans with the aim of allowing, by means of a ramp provided on the projection 32 (FIG. 2), the return of the feeler under the stack of discs during the return movement of the columns.
The device for detecting the diameter of a playing disc shown in the drawing still makes it possible to control the automatic stopping of the talking machine at the end of the series of discs. When no disc is placed on the supports 9, the feeler takes the position shown in fig. 5. In this position, the finger 37 is placed on the opposite face of a drive member 50 by virtue of a notch 54 made in the latter in a part arranged at an angle to allow the passage of the finger 37.
Shortly before the end of the return movement of the column, after the last disc has fallen, the organ 37 arrives in its rest position; the nose 36 escapes this member, respectively the surface 48 escapes the stop 49 and the released probe takes the position shown in FIG. 5. The driver 50 engages with the finger 37 and actuates it in a clockwise direction.
The movement of the latter causes the opening of a lock 54-55 for maintaining, in the engaged position, a switch 56 connected to the power supply circuit of the drive motor of the parte-disc plate. This lock 54-5-5 is lined with a second lock (not shown), the opening of which is controlled by the arm of the pick-up entering the last groove of a disc. These two locks are arranged so that the opening of the switch is only carried out when they are both in the open position, that is to say at the end of the last disc in the series.
When the pick-up arrives in the last streak of the last disc, the latter causes the opening of said second lock, so that the lever 55 oscillates under the influence of its spring. The latter controls the opening of the switch, the application of the brake, and the lock in the disengaged position of the clutch - controlling the camshaft by means of a device not shown. Thus, the camshaft cannot be actuated, even if the brake stops the disc holder plate only after the latter has made several revolutions.
The pick-up arm therefore remains completely free, so that it can be brought manually to its rest stop. In addition, to allow repetition of the last disc in the series, a safety device actuated by the manual control member of the rod 17 is provided. This safety device is formed by a lock (not shown) integral with the rod 17. In the position of repeating a disc of this rod, this lock blocks the switch 56 in the engaged position.
Finally, a second safety device is provided to ensure the return of the pick-up in the first groove of a disc to be repeated, regardless of the diameter of the latter. This device is constituted by a stop (not shown) secured to the rod 17. 8i the disc to be repeated is a 30 cm disc, the displacement of the rod 17 from the position shown to its repeating position of a disc brings said stopper into contact with part of lever 42, so as to maintain it, against the action of its return spring, in the position shown in phantom.
This stop acts in the same way when repeating any disc of the stack of discs, so as to maintain the positioning of the lever 42 according to the diameter of the last disc played. These last two safety devices being described and represented in another patent by the same inventor, will not be described in more detail here.
It should be noted that the diameter of the disc to be played is detected on the right where the disc rests on one of the supports of the stack of discs. This arrangement makes it possible to avoid any detection error due, for example, to warping of the discs, especially when care is taken to place the projection 32 on a diameter slightly greater than that of the small discs.
Finally, the positioning of the control members for the lateral movement of the pick-up arm is controlled by the drive motor of the disc holder plate since the latter actuates the columns. Thus, it is possible to provide a return spring for the lever 42 which is relatively strong and in any case largely sufficient to overcome all the friction which could occur, for example, in the joints of the rod 41.
It is obvious that the form of execution described can accommodate in its. construction details modifications. One could, for example, provide each of the projections on a separate feeler member and mount on each support 9 a feeler. One could also replace the feeler 28 by a finger, subjected to the action of a spring and sliding in a groove made in one of the supports 9, the spring tending to keep this finger in contact with the periphery of the disc placed. on the support.
By the fact that this finger comes into contact with the periphery of the disc. in the right where it rests by the support, the possible warping of the disc cannot cause an error of detection of its diameter. This finger could control the positioning of a finger drive member 37 fulfilling the same purpose and acting in the same way as the drive member 35. A stop could be provided to retain the feeler finger in its position. during the rotation of the supports, this stopper being able to fulfill the same purpose as the spout 36 and act in a similar manner.
However, the embodiment described has the advantage of avoiding any deterioration of the disks due to inattention by the user.
In fact, in the embodiment shown, the detection device is always ready to operate, the weight of the discs placed on the supports automatically bringing the feeler into position as a function of the diameter of the lower disc.
