Description
Process for applying a metallic coating to a wire. For a wide variety of purposes, it is necessary to cover metal wires with another metal. The metallic coating can be applied by evaporation of the metal and deposition on: the wire base or, for example, by cathodic sputtering and deposition.
The evaporation or cathodic atomization must always be carried out in a fully sealed off apparatus in order to maintain, for example, the required vacuum or, for example, a protective gas atmosphere. When applying a metallic over addition to a wire, however, the method poses difficulties in that it can only be worked in batches and only a more or less short piece of wire can be provided with a metal layer.
The present invention relates to a method for applying a metallic coating to a wire, which is characterized in that it is carried out through a chamber in which the metallic coating is applied, and which at the point of the Wire inlet and wire outlet each has a drawing nozzle through which the wire undergoes a double cross-sectional reduction when passing, and the metal applied to the wire is smoothed and compacted as it passes through the target outlet nozzle.
By using such a method it is possible to apply the metallic coating to the wire in a continuous operation. By smoothing and compressing the z. B. vapor-deposited; or powdered metal when passing the wire through the exit nozzle, an intimate connection between the applied metal and the underlying wire, for example iron wire, can be created.
The drawing nozzles can be manufactured in a known manner, for example from sintered aluminum oxide of the greatest possible purity, to which hardening and / or grain-refining additives, such as chromium oxide or the like, can optionally be added.
The present method is suitable e.g. B. especially for the production of high quality heating conductors. It can be carried out as follows, for example: An iron wire of - mm 0 is first passed through a pickling bath. to obtain a completely oxide-free surface. This wire is passed through a drawing nozzle that reduces its cross-section into a cathodic atomization chamber and is provided with a metal coating that prevents scaling, for example with aluminum or nickel chromium.
After passing through an outlet nozzle, which also reduces the cross section, a 4 mm thick wire with perfectly smoothed and compacted metal is obtained, which wire can be coiled and installed in the appropriate devices in an annealed or unannealed condition.
