Process for producing a gas-tight connection between the electrode of spark plugs and the ceramic insulator. The invention relates. on a process to produce a gas-tight connection between the central electrode of spark plugs, which is provided with a collar, with the ceramic insulator of the plugs. To produce such a connection, it has already been proposed to fill the annular space between the center electrode and the insulating body with a very finely ground powder and to press the powder into the space for sealing purposes so that it forms a gas-tight cushion.
The success of such a seal is doubtful because the structure of the pad is loosened by the movements of the electrode as a result of the thermal expansion and contraction during operation of the candle.
The invention aims to create a gas-tight connection which is removed from the influence of thermal expansion and whose method of manufacture is simple and suitable for mass production. The inven tion consists in the fact that the end face of the insulator and the side of the electrode collar facing it are precisely machined and pressed together with a layer of ground powder interposed, the electrode being supported in the part of the insulator adjacent to the collar. The compression is preferably increased by deforming the collar.
With this seal falls. the powder essentially: the role to fill the pores and unevenness of the adjacent surfaces of the federal government and the insulating body, while the seal itself is mainly caused by the flat surfaces abutting under pressure. The pressure of the federal government. If the electrode is supported in the part of the insulating body adjacent to the collar, there are no effects due to the thermal expansion of the electrode. possible. the more so because the temperature of the electrode is relatively low at this point.
The drawing shows an exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention in section. a is an insulator made of a Kerainic mass and b an electrode made of metal, e.g. B. made of high quality steel. The electrode has a collar c at the end and a thread b on the shaft by means of which it can be fastened in the insulating body. The front side of the insulator and the side of the collar facing it are precisely machined.
When assembling the spark plug, the end face of the insulator and the face of the collar facing it are provided with an oil film. Then a thin layer of finely ground powder: e.g. B. talc, placed on the insulator and dusted the electrode, with the powder being pressed into the pores and unevenness of the surfaces pressed together. A t.i-ef is rolled into the lateral surface of the federal government,
whereby the material of the collar is deformed at the lower edge and the lower edge of the collar is pressed against the face of the insulator at the umfaii.
