Nach Abkühlen des Ge misches wird das kristallinische Material ab- filtriert und getrocknet. Es besteht aus dem Acetylderivat des gewünschten Produktes und kann aus Essigsäure kristalVsiert wer den, aus der es sich in farblosen Nadeln ab scheidet, die bei 243' C schmelzen. Es wird durch Kochen mit wä;
Process for making a cyclic ketone. The invention relates to the manufacture of cyclic concretes that can be used, for example, as intermediates in chemical syn theses, especially in the synthesis of medicinal products.
When using concretes from the general formula R. CO. CH "where R is an aromatic group, e.g., a phenyl, naphthyl or appropriately substituted phenyl or naphthyl group, condensed with furfural, become compounds of the general formula

CO. CH, representing acetophenone, is the product furfurylidene acetophenone

if R is a ss-naphthyl group, the end product is'
EMI0001.0021
When treated with aqueous-alcoholic hydrochloric acid, these furfurylidene derivatives are converted into diketo acids by the general formula <B> R </B> # <B> CO </B> # CH ?,

Acids with this general formula can be converted into substituted cyclopentenone-acetic acids of the structure by means of reagents such as dilute, aqueous solutions of caustic potash or caustic soda

being transformed.
When R represents ß-naphthyl, the product is 3-ß-naphthyl -d2-cyclopentene-1- an-2 -acetic acid having the formula
EMI0002.0009
The cyclopentenone acetic acids can (e.g.

B. a ss-naphthyl group) can be condensed with the group R to form connec tions in which the 5-carbon ring is connected to the group R through an interposed 6-carbon ring in which water is between the Carboxyl group and the ortho- or a-position of the group R is split off with the aid of a condensation agent.
So if the group R is a phenyl group, the ring formation takes place at the ortho position, whereby a connection with the structural skeleton

results, while the ring formation occurs in the a-position such.

Lischer solution in the presence of palladium-containing strontium carbonate) can be reduced to compounds in which the ring consisting of 5 carbon atoms is saturated and what the structure is

It has now been found that the carbogyl group of compounds of the type if the group R represents an ß-naphthyl group.
When the 5-carbon dioxide is saturated, the condensation can be carried out with the aid of phosphoric anhydride in benzene solution or preferably with phosphoric anhydride in syrupy phosphoric acid solution.
The product is generally a compound having a basic structure of the type
EMI0002.0075
in which the newly formed ring has a ketone structure. The condensation can also be carried out at 98 ° C using 80% strength sulfuric acid, although with a poorer yield.
Thus 3-ß-naphthyl-cyclopentan-1-one-2-acetic acid can be converted into 3 ', 4-diketo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,2-cyclopentanophene-anthrene
EMI0003.0001
However, when the 5-carbon ring is unsaturated, the newly formed ring appears

For example, 3-ss-naphthyl- d2-cyclopenten-l-one-2-acetic acid is
EMI0003.0006
In a similar way, 3-phenyl-d'-cyclopentene-1-one-2-acetic acid can be converted into 4-oxy-3'-keto-1,2-cyclopentennaphthalene.
If the compounds have an unsaturated 5-carbon ring, the condensation can be effected with condensation agents such as sulfuric acid or an aliphatic anhydride, e.g. B. acetic anhydride or propionic anhydride. Preferably acetic acid is used (with boiling), and in this case the product is obtained in the form of the acetyl derivative since the hydroxyl group is esterified.
This acetyl derivative can easily be linked to the compound with a free hydroxyl group.

always in the enol form, and a product with the structure of the bond type 4-oxy-3'-keto-1,2-cyclopentene-phenanthene is converted. being drolyzed; for example, by treatment with aqueous-alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution and subsequent acidification.
The group R, as mentioned above, may be substituted in any suitable manner, e.g. B. by one or more hydroxyl groups, one or more alkoxy groups, such as. B. the methoxy group, or one or more halogen atoms, such as. B. chlorine, or by combinations of such substituents. Thus R can represent 6-methoxy-ss-naphthyl or 5-chloro-6-methoxy-ss-naphthyl.
In this case: are the products obtained according to the invention in which the mentioned 5-carbon ring is unsaturated, namely (7-methoxy) - and (8-chloro-7-methoxy) -4-oxy-3'-keto -1, 2 - cyclopentenphen-

namely (3 ', 4-diketo-7-methoxy) - respectively. (3 ', 4 diketo-8-chloro-7-methoxy) -1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1,
2 - cyclopentanophenanthrene. If the group R is 6-oxy-ss-naphthyl, who of course receives the corresponding oxy compounds.
The present patent now relates to a process for the preparation of 7-methoxy-3'-keto-1,2-cyclopentenophenanthrene, which is characterized in that one accesses the compound of the formula

allows a dehydrating agent to act, through which ring closure between the carboxyl group and the a-position of the naphthyl radical is effected.
Example: The compound 7-methoxy-4-oxy-3'-keto-1,2-zyklopentenophena.nthren of the formula
EMI0004.0035
is made as follows: anthren. When the 5-carbon ring is saturated, the corresponding compounds are 10 parts 3- (6-methoxy-ss-naphthyl-dzcyclopenten-1-one-2-acetic acid,

are ge with 75 parts of acetic anhydride on the reflux condenser for 30 minutes. boils and the excess acetic anhydride is removed by distillation. A suitable amount (about 40 cm ') of methyl alcohol is added to the residue and the mixture is boiled while grinding the lumps of solid material.
After the mixture has cooled, the crystalline material is filtered off and dried. It consists of the acetyl derivative of the desired product and can be crystallized from acetic acid, from which it separates out in colorless needles which melt at 243 ° C. It is made by cooking with wä;
Brirg methyl alcohol is hydrolyzed with potassium hydrogen, where it dissolves quickly, and when the solution is acidified with acetic acid, the desired product is precipitated. If desired, it can be recrystallized by dissolving it in pyridine and adding acetic acid.
When heated, the substance turns dark at 268'C, softens at 285'C and melts to a brown 01 at 293 to 299'C.
The acid used as starting material in this example can be prepared as follows: A 1% solution of @ - (6-methoxy-ss- naphthyl) -y - @ - diketaheptanoic acid in 2% aqueous potassium hydroxide is dissolved for one hour 95'C heated.
When the solution is acidified with hydrochloric acid, the cyclopentene acid is precipitated; it is collected and washed with water. It can be recrystallized from ethyl acetate or aqueous acetic acid and forms straw-colored needles that melt at 204 to 205 ° C.
The heptanoic acid itself can be obtained by the method described by Gehrer and Igler (Ber. 1899, year 32, p. 1178, and 1901, theory, year 34, p. 1263).
To prepare the @ - (6-methoxy-ss- naphthyl) -y - @ -, diketoheptanoic acid is z. B. 6-acetyl-2-methaxynaphthalene (obtained, for example, by the method of Hawarth and Sheldrick, J. Chem. Soc. 1934, 865) is converted into the furfurylidene derivative, and this compound is converted into the desired acid by boiling the compound (14 g) on the reflux condenser with alcohol (240om ') and hydrochloric acid (60em @ acid of density 1.16) for 15 hours.
After removing the alcohol by distillation, the product is extracted with a boiling mixture of hydrochloric acid (80 em3 acid with a density of 1.16), glacial acetic acid (100 cm ') and water (200 cm "), the extraction being repeated until no further appreciable amount of the product is obtained. The methoxynaphthyl-diketoheptanoic acid melts after recrystallization from aqueous acetic acid at 142 to 143 ° C.
It must also be mentioned that when the furfurylidene derivative of 6-acetyl-2-methoxynaphthalene is converted into diketo acid by boiling with hydrochloric acid, a certain demethylation occurs, so that to a certain extent the compound @ - (6-oxy- ss-naphthyl-y - @ - diketoheptanoic acid is formed, which on treatment with the aqueous potassium hydroxide turns into 3- (6-oxy-ss- naphthyl)
-42-cyclopenten-l-one-2-acetic acid is converted. When working according to the example, the last-mentioned substance provides 4,7-dioxy-3'-keto-1,2-cyclopentene-phenanthene. If you want to use the starting material free of ogycyklopentenone-acetic acid for the process according to the invention, it is advisable to methylate the crude cyclopene tenone-acetic acid (e.g.
treatment with methyl sulfate and sodium hydroxide in aqueous or alcoholic solution) in order to methylate the hydroxyl group in the naphthalene nucleus, or to treat the crude diketoheptanoic acid with methylating agents.
