Description
Process for preserving solutions of basic aluminum salts. Solutions of basic aluminum salts are used for various technical purposes. For example, solutions of basic aluminum sulfate or aluminum chloride are used to extract sulfur dioxide from gases containing sulfur dioxide, such as roasting gases, by absorbing and driving out the sulfur dioxide. The process has the disadvantage that the basic aluminum salt solutions tend to form sparingly soluble precipitates after a certain period of use, that is to say after the solution has been saturated several times with sulfur dioxide and the gas is expelled again.
These excretions lead to a decrease in the absorption capacity and, under certain circumstances, to operational disturbances due to clogging of the lines and the like.
It has now been found that the formation of such precipitates can be avoided if humic acid or humic acid-like substances are added to the solutions. Small amounts, for example additives of 0.1 to 0.5 percent by weight, have been found to be most effective.
Both natural humic acids, for example the residues of the extraction of bituminous substances from lignite with solvents such as benzene or benzene-alcohol mixtures, and synthetic humic acids, for example obtained from phenols and persulfate or from sugar and sulfuric acid, can be used.
Humic acid degradation materials, as they are obtained in some cases in the manufacturing methods just mentioned, for example when working at relatively high temperatures during the conversion of phenols and persulfate, give similar successes.
<I> Example: </I> Using a solution containing 524 g of highly basic aluminum chloride with an approximate composition of Al_ (OH), Cl per liter, sulfur dioxide is absorbed from roasting gases. Pure sulfur dioxide is then obtained from the solution saturated with sebweed dioxide by heating it to about <B> 100 '</B> and, after cooling, the solution is used for the absorption of further amounts of sulfur dioxide.
After six times of saturation and expulsion, the solution becomes slightly cloudy; After 18 times of saturation and expulsion, precipitates have formed and the absorption capacity is greatly reduced.
If, however, 0.1% of a humic acid obtained from the extraction of brown coal with benzene as a residue is added to the solution before use and the solution is then used in the same way to obtain sulfur dioxide, it is only weak after 40 times of saturation and expulsion Determine turbidity. Excretions with a decrease in absorption capacity only occur after the process has been repeated more than 70 times.
