Description
Process for the production of sulfur dioxide from such containing Gases Various methods are known to thereby add sulfur dioxide from gases win that it is -absorbed in liquids and from it by heating in enriched State again drives out. Absorbent liquids known for this purpose are for example water and solutions of ammonium sulfite and bisulfite or primary and secondary sodium phosphate. The absorbency of these liquids leaves however, much to be desired.
It has also already been proposed to use organic as the absorption liquid Bases, e.g. B. aliphatic or aromatic amines, optionally mixed with Water to use. Although better absorption is achieved with these agents, however, they have the disadvantage that losses of the organic compounds as a result their volatility and also the sulfur dioxide obtained as a result becomes contaminated.
Solutions of basic aluminum sulfate are also used as an absorption liquid has been proposed; however, they absorb no more than 10000 sulfur dioxide per liter. In addition, they tend to form sparingly soluble precipitates, so that the absorption capacity soon wears off sharply. After all, we already have solutions of aluminum chloride or aluminum sulfite used for the present purposes. But also the absorption capacity these solutions is not satisfactory, and in the case of using the usual Aluminum chloride solutions are disadvantageous in their property, the walls of the apparatus to attack.
It has now been found that solutions of basic aluminum halides, especially chlorides, which contain alkali salts at most in small amounts, are able to absorb large amounts of sulfur dioxide. The sulfur dioxide is released again quantitatively on heating, if necessary with a simultaneous reduction in pressure. Basic aluminum halides of various basicities can be used; It is particularly advantageous to use a basic aluminum chloride with the approximate composition Al @ (OH) ;; Cl. At 'a temperature of 25' and under normal pressure z. B. a solution that contains 5249 of this compound per liter to absorb 265g sulfur dioxide per liter.
Hardly soluble salts are used when using this concentration and not formed in the absence of significant amounts of alkali salts. Occasionally When the sulfur dioxide is expelled, small amounts of precipitate are formed, which, however, will readily go back into solution at the next saturation with sulfur dioxide goes.
The absorption can take place in the usual absorption systems, such as. B. Trickle towers. Cooling the absorption liquid to lower temperatures and application of increased pressure increases the absorbency even further. The liquid has significantly lower corrosive properties than the solution of normal aluminum chloride.
The absorbed sulfur dioxide can be, for example, by heating Drive completely in pure form from the absorption liquid to 80 to 100 '; if reduced pressure is used, correspondingly lower temperatures are sufficient. The latter also applies if the expulsion is carried out by means of gases passed through, like air.
The absorption liquids can be reused as often as required. The gradual accumulation of sulfates can in a known manner, for. B. by precipitation of the sulfate or by branching off part of the solution and replacing it with fresh Solution to be counteracted. The branched off "feil can have any use, z. B. the extraction of clay or alum, are supplied.
Example 52: 1 part by weight of a basic aluminum chloride from approximate composition AL (OH) 5C1 were dissolved in 72o parts by weight of water. This solution was used in a trickle tower at room temperature and at geic, usual Pressure roasting gas, containing 7 percent by volume of sulfur dioxide, washed. After Saturation was achieved by heating to about 10o ° 265 kg of sulfur dioxide per cubic meter Obtain absorption liquid.
Became 34.9 parts by weight of the same basic aluminum chloride Dissolved in 815 parts by weight of water and treated as above, the amount was of the absorbed and expelled sulfur dioxide 229 kg per cubic meter Absorption liquid.
