Process for the production of road building materials. In the production of .Strassenbaustof fen with low aging with the use of plastic masses, it has already been proposed to use flown coal tar peehe with a small content of free carbon.
It was previously assumed in specialist circles that coal tar pitches with a high content of free carbon could not be used in the manufacture of road building materials.
Experiments by the applicant have now surprisingly shown that an excellent starting product for road building materials, pavement grouting, etc. can be produced through a particularly high content of free carbon.
The process of the present invention for the production of road building materials with a low tendency to age using plastic masses on the flown coal tar pitches is characterized in that coal tar pitches are used whose softening point is higher than 110 C and whose free carbon content is above 45%, preferably over 55%.
It was recognized that the substances obtained by the present process are particularly suitable for road construction purposes. The reason for this lies in the properties of the plastic mass, in particular in its great toughness, the .good adhesive strength, the high softening point, and the low tendency to age. The great adhesive strength and the great toughness in particular form a prominent feature.
the plastic mass, which makes them highly suitable for their use as road building material. It can be used both for the production of entire ceilings and, especially on paved roads, to cast the joints between the paving stones and between the joints of the curbs. The plastic compound is also particularly suitable for encapsulating wooden pavement.
It has been shown that the building material produced according to the invention is also well suited. To be used instead of mastic asphalt in the construction of sidewalks and cycle paths.
Another advantage is the fact that the compound has a particularly low water absorption capacity and a high resistance to attack by acidic industrial air and water.
When used, the plastic hatch is subjected to the usual treatment for asphalt roads in the usual way. that is, it is heated, if necessary after the addition of a solvent, and then applied BEZW on the prepared bedding. poured between the joints.
In some cases it is useful. the plastic mass still add other fillers, such as crushed slag, grit and other more, useful in connec tion with solvents, eg. B. as tar macadam.
<I> Example: </I> A coal tar pitch with a Kramer-Sarov softening point of 69 C and a free carbon content of 22% anthracene oil in a ratio of 85:15 was added. The plastic mass produced in this way had a softening point according to K.-S. from 42.4 'C a viscosity drop height of 1.05 cm.
In a second experiment, a very brittle hard pitch with a softening point according to K.-S. of <B> 138 '</B> and with a free carbon content of 54% the same non-rusting anthracene oil was added in a ratio of 67:33.
The plastic mass obtained had a softening point according to K.-S. from 47 C a viscosity drop of 3.4. The height of the toughness drop is thus more than three times that of the first attempt, despite the fact that the softening point of the plastic mass produced in the second attempt was 47.
If one were to lower the softening point in the second experiment to 42.4 ', that is to say down to the softening point of the mass produced in the first experiment, by adding further anthracene oil, the viscosity drop height would be even greater.
The advantage of the process according to the invention clearly emerges from the strong increase in the height of the viscosity drop.
The softening point was determined using the method of Krämer Sarnow, and the toughness was determined using the falling ball method, which was carried out as follows:
Round disks 10 cm in diameter and 1 cm thick are gassed from the material to be tested. These discs are placed on a ring in such a way that they are only supported at the edge. A steel ball weighing 500 g is dropped onto the center of the plate, which is kept at 15 ° C., vertically to the greater height.
The height at which the specimen shows the first cracks is a measure of the toughness.
