La fig. 1 est une vue en plan avec une partie arrachée, de l'ensemble de l'appareil constituant la première forme d'exécution; La fig. 2 est une vue de côté de l'appa reil montrant les -dispositifs\ automatiques; La fig. 3 montre un détail de la fig. 2; La fig. 4 est une vue de l'autre de côté de l'appareil, dans laquelle on peut voir un dis positif. qui permet le recul automatique, ainsi qu'un interrupteur d'arrivée de courant à une lampe excitatrice;
La fig. 5 est une vue de côté du cylindre porte-phonogrammes où l'on démontre sché matiquement la manière initiale de fixer le papier constituant le phonogramme; La fig. 6 est une vue similaire à celle de la fig. 5 pour démontrer comment s'ajuste le phonogramme et ,comment est assurée la join ture des deux extrémités de ce phonogramme, au .moyen .de la barre de fixation; La fig. 7 est une vue en plan de la deuxième forme d'exécution de l'appareil sui vant l'invention;
La fig; 8 est une vue,de côté montrant le dispositif de freinage de l'appareil suivant la fig. 7; Les fig. 9 à 18 montrent, à, une échelle plus grande, divers dispositifs de fixation du phonogramme, établis de façon telle qu'en passant en face du faisceau de lumière du lecteur photoélectrique, ils ne produisent pas de variations brusques de la lumière ré fléchie aux cellules photoélectriques, de telle sorte que leur passage ne soit pas percepti ble à l'ouïe durant la reproduction sonore;
Ceci fait, et une fois la touche de commande 23 abaissée, au moyen de la tige 22 et du levier 21, la pièce 17 bascule et pousse simultanément le levier 47, de sorte que l'extrémité antérieure se câle dans la pièce d'accrochage 55 qui la fixe dans cette position;

Figs. 19 and 20 show phonograms with various types of perforations for use with the apparatus according to fig. 1 to 6 and 7 and 8.
The apparatus according to fig. 1 to 6 comprises a cylinder 1 on which is applied a phonogram 2 in the form of a rolled sheet, cylinder 1 having a row of hooking buttons 3 which coincide with the eyelets of the phonogram 2. Inside the cylinder 1 is a motor 4 which controls the latter by means of pulleys 5 and 6 and the belt 7. The cylinder 1 is provided with a fixing bar 8 fixed to this cylinder by movable arms 9, having a spring 10 which keeps the bar 8 applied against the cylinder 1.
Opposite the two ends of the cylinder are end plates 11 and 12; on the plate 12 is mounted the motor 4 and on the plate 11 the rotation shaft of the cylinder 1 and other members which will be discussed later. A pressure brush 13, made of rubber, is fixed to the end plates 11 and 12 by means of arms 14 and of the axis 15. This axis carries on one side, fixed to it, an arm 16 which controls the brush. pressure 13. On the plate 11 is mounted a part 17 pivoted on an axis 18, biased by a spring 19 and provided with a stop 20, which is in engagement with the fork of the arm 1.6.
By means of a lever 21 and a rod 22, the part 17 is connected to a control button 23. The end plates 11 and 12 sup also carry the ends of worm screws 22 4 and 25, which, by means of gears 26 and 27, a gear 28, the cylinder 1 and a chain 29, rotate in synchronism with the cylinder 1.
A photoelectric reader comprising an exciting lamp 30, a box-envelope 31, a lens system 32 and photoelectric cells 33 is mounted on a carriage 34, which slides on the guides 35 and 36, by simple friction on the first guide and by means of the wheel 37 on the second. The carriage 34 of said reader is provided with a toothed part 38 which, depending on its position, engages with the advancement screw 24 or with the retraction screw 25. This toothed part 38 is provided with a fork 39, the which embraces the bar 40 which extends parallel to the screws 24 and 25 and which, at each end, is fixed to the bar 41 and 42 pivoted on the pins 43.
As can be seen in fig. 2, the arm 41 has an extension by which the latter is articulated to the rod 44, mu-_ nie of a button 45. The rod 44 is connected to the rod 22 by a lever 46. In FIG. 2, 47 designates a lever pivoted at 48 and carrying a stop 49 and cooperating with a spring 50. In its lowered position, the stop 49 abuts with the stop 51 of the cylinder 1. The lever 47 carries a contact rod 52, which in its lowered position establishes the electrical connection between the brushes 53 and 54 interposed in one of the current supply connections of the motor 4.
The contact rod 52 is held bare in its lowered position by a fastening part 55, which, with a tooth, mobilizes the end of the lever 47. As is apparent from FIGS. 1 and 2, the carriage 34 carries an articulated arm 56, intended to push with its free end the hooking part 55, thus freeing the front end of the lever 47, biased by the spring 50.
In fig. 4, 57 denotes a leaf spring mounted on a support made of insulating material 58 and 59 a hooking part fixed to the blade 57; this hooking part 59 keeps the arm 42, which supports bar 40, thus ironing the current supply circuit of exciter lamp 30.
The photo electric reader carries a stopper 60, intended to push back the fastening part 59, releasing the arm 42 biased by the spring 61. In the upper part of the casing 31 of the exciting lamp 30 is arranged a small mirror 62 which reflects a beam of light on the phonogram 2, passing through a window 63 of an opaque screen 64 shown in FIG. 3. This device makes it possible to observe whether the photoelectric reader is correctly focused on the phonogram line, since this light beam agrees with the beam concentrated by the lens system 32. This adjustment is obtained with the screw 65, held by the support 66.
In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, the advance of the carriage 34 is carried out only by means of the worm 24, while the retreat is done by means of a traction cable 67. The cable is fixed to the toothed part 68 recalled by the res comes out 69. On an extension of the axis of the screw 24 freely rotates the pulley 70, provided with the tooth 71 which can come into engagement with the tooth 72, which tooth is fixed to the axis of the screw 24. The pulley 70, which can also be moved laterally, is attached to another pulley 73 fixed to the plate 11 of the apparatus.
Parallel to the screw 24 extends the bar 74 which is capable of moving longitudinally. This bar is connected by means of an articulation to a lever 75, which rests on a trestle 76, fixed to the plate 11. The lever 75 carries, at its middle part, the axis of the pulley 70. On the bar 74 is a sliding stopper 77 which limits the advance of the chain 34 of the photoelectric reader. As regards the automatic braking device of the apparatus according to fig. 7 and 8, it will be noted that on the plate 11 is fixed by screws 78, an elastic arm 79, which is provided with a switch 80, interposed in the circuit of the current of the motor 4, with its contact 81, which cooperates with a contact 82, fixed to the plate 11.
To the elastic arm 79 is also attached a leather heel 83, which rubs against the flange of the cylinder 1, when the arm 79 remains free. The arm 79 ends in the form of a knife and cooperates with the articulated stop 84, which is biased upwards by a spring 85 fixed to the plate 11 and to a bar 86 which slides into an orifice of the stop 84 and is articulated at its other end on a movable arm 87 and whose pivot axis is designated by 88. The carriage 34 of the reader carries a stopper 89 intended to actuate the arm 87, while the rod 22 'has its lower end wedge-shaped, in order to cause by its descent the displacement of the free end of the arm 79, which separates from the cylinder, closes the contact of the switch 80 and remains in engagement position with the stop 84.
As indicated in fig. 7, the stopper 90 is fixed to the bar 74.
The devices described operate as follows: The front edge of the phonogram 2 is placed by adjusting its eyelets 100 on the buttons 3 of the cylinder 1 and the fixing bar 8 is applied to said end of the phonogram.
This is done, and once the control button 23 has been lowered, by means of the rod 22 and the lever 21, the part 17 tilts and simultaneously pushes the lever 47, so that the front end is wedged into the hooking part. 55 which fixes it in this position;
at this moment the stop 49 is: raised and no longer opposes the passage of the stop 51 of the cylinder 1, and as the engine 4 is switched on by the contact rod 52, the cylinder dre starts up, causing at the same time the phonogram which is applied against the cylinder by the pressure brush 13, which (fig. 5) comes into action when the button 23 is lowered.
Fig. 5 shows the position of the part 17 when the key 23 is lowered, and in FIG. 6 is shown, in dotted lines, how, at the moment when the fixing bar 8 passes in the vicinity of the brush 13; it is lifted from the cylinder by the edge of the part 17, the posterior free end of the phonogram being placed at this moment automatically under the bar 8, which falls immediately and fixes the phonogram. Simulta nement by means of the lever 46, the rod 44 and the arm 41, the bar 40 is carried upwards driving the fork 39 and meshing the toothed part 38 of the reader with the screw 24 for advancement.
The bar 40 remains in this position, held by the toothed piece 59 (Fig. 4) which allows; at the same time, the lighting de the exeitateur lamp. As soon as the pressure ceases, the button 23 is returned to its rest position by means of the spring 19 and the cylinder continues to rotate and, synchronously with this, advances the photoelectric reader by reproducing the sounds by means of 'an audio-frequency amplifier and a loudspeaker.
When the reader comes to the end of its travel (fig. 4), the stopper 60 pushes back the hooking part 59 and the spring 61 draws the bar 40 downwards, the exciter lamp 30 goes out and the part 38 meshes with the worm 25, then causing the backward movement of the photoelectric reader, which on reaching its starting point (fig. 1 and 2) pushes with the articulated arm 56 the fastening part 55, releasing the lever 47, which, attracted by the res out 50, disconnects the motor and interposes the stop 49, which, by abutting against the stop 51, stops the cylinder.
With regard to the recoil operation of the apparatus according to fig. 7, this is carried out as follows: When the carriage 34 of the photoelectric reader reaches the end of its travel, it abuts against the stopper 77 and moves the bar 74 longitudinally, activating the lever 75 and bearing the pulley 70 against the end of the axis of the screw 24, engaging the tooth 71 with the tooth 72, and when the pulley 70 starts to rotate, it winds the cable 67 exerting a pulling effect on the tooth arti abutment 68 which separates it from screw 24, and causes the reader to move backwards, which, on reaching the starting point,
pushes the stop 89 against the articulated arm 87 and in turn the articulated bar 86, which is carried downwards by the stopper 51 'of the cylinder, and as going down it causes the stop 84, the elastic arm 79 is released and presses its leather heel 83 against the plate of cylinder 1, braking it and disconnecting, at the same time, the engine. If simultaneously, the carriage 34 drives the stopper 90 and disengages the pulley 70.
As has been said, phonogram 1 has a helical sound recording path when applied to the phonogram holder. When removed from it, the path appears as multiple straight and parallel paths.
In order for sound reproduction to be correct, the extremes of the traces must match up exactly, once the foil has been applied around the cylinder, which is achieved by the combination of several of the devices described, namely ie hooking buttons, phonogram eyelets, pressure brush and fixing rod.
It is obvious that the described embodiments of the object of the invention are liable to be modified from the point of view of their construction, but always in agreement for the purposes of obtaining an automatic fixation of phonograms and a automatic operation of the device. For example, the fixing rod 8 of the phonogram could be replaced by similar devices, which are shown in FIGS. 9 to 18 listed and explained in the following.
Fig. 9 shows a view of a part of a threaded bar with thread 91, which, by obliquity of its thread, produces in passing in front of the photoelectric reader variations of light, gradual and inaudible and as it is placed on the union edge of the phonogram, it also avoids the detrimental effect thereof.
Fig. 10 shows a side section, of the detail shown in FIG. 9.
Fig. 11 shows a view of a part of the coil spring 92 @ which is applied to the union edges of the phonogram 2 and, by the obliquity of its turns, cancels out the damaging effect of the edges.
Fig. 12 shows a side view of the detail shown in FIG. 11.
Fig. 13 shows a view of a toothed bar portion 93 applied to the union edges of the phonogram 2. The obliquity of the teeth avoids abrupt light variations.
Fig. 14 shows a side view of the detail shown in FIG. 13.
Fig. 15 shows a view of a fastening device having small teeth which apply to the edges of the pho nogram 2. The teeth 94 are integral with the bars 95 which are articulated on the cylinder 1 by means of the arms 96 and the axes 97. The springs 98 attract the teeth 94 towards the surface of the cylinder 1. These teeth 94, each time they pass in front of the photoelectric reader, determine gradual variations in light.
Fig. 16 shows a side view of FIG. 15.
Fig. 17 shows a view of a part of translucent bar 99 in prismatic form, applied to the edges of the phonogram 2.
Fig. 18 shows a side view of FIG. 17 in which one can see the prismatic shape of the bar 99, which bar being much more transparent on its edges than in the middle, produces gradual variations in light as it passes in front of the photoelectric reader.
The phonogram may have, to facilitate its attachment, eyelets, hooks, etc., preferably reinforced.
Fig. 19 shows a phonogram 2 with the eyelets 100 placed on one of the edges of the phonogram for its exact placement on the phonogram cylinder.
Fig. 20 shows a phonogram 2 with the eyelets 100 placed on the side edges which have no trace of sound recording.
The phonogram may be established by any suitable photoelectric recording method and copies thereof may be made by photographic methods or by means of printing plates and printing ink or other printing substance.
The arrangement of the optical tube and the photoelectric cells shown in fig. 2 and 4, allows the cell or the photoelectric cells to be illuminated only by diffused light which comes from the phonogram illuminated by the scanning beam. The photoelectric cells are located outside the direct line of reflection of the scanning beam, the latter being perpendicular or almost perpendicular to the area of the phonogram.
The optical tube could also be arranged in such a way that the photocell or cells are excited by totally or partially reflected rays.
In addition, the pressure brush 13 could be replaced by another device fulfilling this function, a rubber roller, for example. As regards the advancement of the reader, this could also be achieved by means of a rack and the retraction by a rack or else by a res sort.
The screw 65 could also be replaced by a lever, an eccentric, etc. It is also not absolutely necessary for the apparatus to stop when the player reaches its starting point, since it is possible to automatically repeat the reproduction of a phonogram.
Finally, without modifying the apparatus, it could be used for recording phonograms, by placing an oscillograph or recording device in place of the photoelectric reader, and instead of the phonogram, a sheet sensitized to the light, the whole being enclosed in a black room which could cover the appliance.
