Bicyclette.
Bicycle. The object of the present invention is a bicycle whose pedals perform a reciprocating movement. This bicycle is characterized in that each pedal is carried by a lever rotatably mounted in the frame of the bicycle and connected by a connecting rod Fa, a crank integral with a chain wheel,
the connecting rods and cranks being intended to transform the back and forth movement of the pedals into a rotary movement imparted to the chain wheel which transmits it to the rear hub of the bicycle.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention and a variant.
The fi-. 1 is a schematic view of this embodiment; Fig. 2 is a section through II-II @de .la fig. 1, to. larger scale; Fig. .3, shows the variant.
The bicycle shown is of the horizontal pedaling type. The frame 1 carries a seat with backrest 2, and forms a socket 3 traversed by the handlebar 4. A chain wheel 5 is fixed on the axis 6 mounted in the frame and transmits its rotational movement through the chain 7 to the rear hub 8. Each end of the axle 6 carries a crank 9, respectively 10. The axle 6 is arranged at approximately the same height as the rear hub 8.
r1 the front of the chain wheel 5, and at a point located lower than the axis of this wheel, the frame has a box 11 forming a bearing for the axes of two levers 12 and 13. Each .de these levers carry, at its upper end, a pedal 14, respectively 15. The end of the lever 12 is connected, by a connecting rod 16, to the crank 9, and the end cdu lever 13 is connected, by a connecting rod 17 , with the crank 10.
It will be understood that a back and forth movement, imparted by the cyclist to the pedals 14 and 15 and to the levers 12 and 13, is communicated by connecting rods 16 and 17 to the cranks 9 and 1-0, and transformed into a rotary movement of the latter and of the axis 6 of the chain wheel 5. The movement of the chain wheel is transmitted by the chain 7, as in ordinary bicycles, to the rear hub 8.
Fig. 2 shows that the axes 18 and 19 of the levers 12 and 13 enter one clans the other, the axis 19 serving as a box for the axis 18, and the two axes being mounted on ball bearings.
The handlebars 4 are arranged in the extension of the front fork 20 and are inclined towards the rear, the handles can be easily grasped by the cyelite ssis on the seat 2 in a rearward position and benefiting from a point of contact. 'support constituted' by the file.
In the horizontal pedal bicycles used until now. the control was done by means of an ordinary pedal, that is to say the pedals executing a rotary movement and being mounted directly on the axle of the chain wheel.
To ensure horizontal pedaling. this chain wheel was necessarily arranged at the front of the. bicycle, which required an extremely long chain for the transmission to the rear hub. In the bicycle according to the present invention, everything.
keeping the horizontal pedaling, a back and forth movement of the p, ', dales is substituted for the rotational movement and the dead center of the cranks is removed; thanks to the arrangement of the connecting rods 16 and 17.
The seat 2 is carried by the frame so as to be able to move forward or backward. In the variant of fi-. 3, the connecting rods 16 and 17 also connect the pedals to the: cranks 9 and 10. The levers 12 and 13 of the pedals give the movement with bare wheel; # 1 chain 21 of the same axis as the levers, for example by a click indicated by schematically using the pawls 22 coop, # - rant with a ratchet 23.
This snap-fastening can naturally be of any type known and already used in the bicycle. It operates so as to drive the wheel 21 only during the stroke in front of the pedals. The movement of the wheel 21 is transmitted by a chain 24 to a pinion 25 carried by the axis of the wheel 5, and from there by the chain 7 to the rear hub.
Each lever 12 and 13 advances the wheel 21 by an angel corresponding to segment a-b, the length of which corresponds to half the circumference of the pinion 25. This variant is of a more complicated construction than. the example according to, fi-. 1. but it allows a more regular transmission of force to the rear hub.
