Process for the preparation of 4-ethyl-dihydroresorcinol. According to the process of the main patent, resorcinol can be converted into dihydroresorcinol in a simple manner with an almost quantitative yield by using one of resorein and at least. an equivalent of a strongly basic Ver bond prepared solution in the presence of a. The catalyst allows hydrogen to act and acidifies the hydrogenation product.
It has now been found that this process is also eminently suitable for converting 4-alkyl and 4-aralkyl resoreins into the corresponding cyclohexanediones. Metals of group B. of the periodic table can be used as catalysts.
This way is to represent the 4-alkyl or. Aralkyl derivatives are particularly valuable because the 4-alkyl resorcinols are easily accessible according to the generally applicable method of Clemmensen (reports of the German Chemical Society 46 [1913], p. 1837), while the synthetic processes known up to now lead mainly to such cyclohexanedione derivatives ,
which have the substituents in the 5-position (Liebigs Annalen der Chemie, Vol. 294 [18971, 8. 255 to 256). According to the process described in German Patent No. 571972, phenols can also be catalytically hydrogenated in the form of their alkali metal salts, but 6 hydrogen atoms are taken up and alkali-insoluble cyclohexanols are formed.
If, in addition to the phenolic hydroxyl, there is a second substituent in the nucleus, the formation of the trans isomeric hexahydrophenols is favored. In the hydrogenation of the alkylresorcins in the presence of strongly alkaline compounds, alkali-soluble cyclohexanediones are formed, the reaction after taking up only two hydrogen.
atoms is completely finished. In addition, the required temperature is at least 100 lower than in. The patent mentioned.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of 4-ethyl-dihydroresorcinol, which is characterized in that hydrogen is allowed to act on a solution prepared from 4-ethylresorcinol and at least one equivalent of a strongly basic compound in the presence of a catalyst and acidifying the hydrogenation product.
4-ethyl-dihydroresorcinol forms colorless crystals with a melting point of 109; it is easily soluble in organic solvents and also somewhat soluble in water. The new connection is very responsive. It serves as an intermediate product in the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations.
Example: 138 parts by weight of 4-ethylresorcinol, 28 parts by weight of calcium oxide are shaken with hydrogen at atmospheric pressure together with 400 parts by weight of water and 1 part by weight of palladium (deposited on carbon). The uptake of hydrogen takes place slowly at room temperature and is brought to an end by heating to 45 to 50. The solution freed from the catalyst is concentrated to half its volume in a vacuum and then precipitated with dilute acid at a maximum of -f- 5. The yield is 82% of theory.
