Process for the preparation of 4-hegyldihydroresorcinol. According to the process of the main patent, resorcinol can be converted into dihydroresorcinol in a simple manner with an almost quantitative yield by allowing hydrogen to act on a solution prepared from resorcinol and at least one equivalent of a strongly basic compound in the presence of a catalyst and acidifying the hydrogenation product.
It has now been found that this process is also eminently suitable for converting 4-alkyl and 4-aralkyl resorcinols into the corresponding cyclohexanediones. Metals of group B. of the periodic table can be used as catalysts; Find.
This route is to represent the 4-alkyl respectively. Aralkyl derivatives are particularly valuable because the 4-alli: ylresorcinins are according to the generally applicable method of Clemmensen (reports of the German Chemical Society 46 [1913] p.
1837), while the synthetic processes known up to now mainly lead to those cyclohexanedione derivatives which have the substituents in the 5-position (Liebigs Annalen der Chemie, Vol. 294 [18977, pp. 255 to 256).
According to the method described in German Patent No. 571972, phenols can also be catalytically hydrogenated in the form of their alkali metal salts, but -6 hydrogen atoms are taken up and alkali-insoluble cyclohexanols are formed.
Besides the phenolic hydroxyl, there is a second substituent ixn. Core, the formation of the trans isomeric ilexahydrophenols is favored. In the hydrogenation of the alkylresorcinols in the presence of strongly alkaline compounds, alkali-soluble cyclohexanediones are formed, the reaction being completely terminated after the absorption of only two hydrogen atoms.
In addition, the required temperature is at least <B> 100 '</B> lower than in the patent mentioned.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of 4-hexyldihydroresorcinol, which is characterized in that hydrogen is allowed to act on a solution prepared from 4-hexylresorcinol and at least one equivalent of a strongly basic compound in the presence of a catalyst and the hydrogenation product is allowed to act acidified.
4-Hexyldihydroresorcinol forms colorless flakes on crystallization from dilute alcohol or coarse crystals from ethyl acetate with a melting point of 64 ', is difficult in water, easily soluble in soda solution and in organic solvents. The new compound is very responsive. It serves as an intermediate for the manufacture of pharmaceutical preparations.
Example: 192 parts by weight of 4-hexylresorcinol are dissolved in 400 parts by weight of a 10% sodium hydroxide solution and treated with 2 parts by weight of nickel in the form of a nickel catalyst, presented according to Kelber (reports from the German Chemical Society 49 [1916, p. 55 and p.
60, last paragraph) and hydrogenated at <B> 90 '</B> with hydrogen from 20 atmospheres. The reaction is complete after 1 mol of hydrogen has been taken up. The solution freed from the catalyst is allowed to run into 1000 parts by weight of a strength solution of acetic acid, 4-hexyldihydro-resorcinol precipitating out.
The yield is <B> 96% </B> of theory.
