La fig. 1 est un schéma de câblage du dispositif; La fig. 2 montre les caractéristiques mé caniques de l'un des relais figurant dans le schéma de la fig. 1; La fig. 3 représente une variante de relais jouant le même rôle que celui qui est repré senté sur la fig. 2; La fig. 4 représente un détail mécanique d'un autre des relais utilisés dans la dispo sition d'ensemble représentée sur la fig. 1;
En con tinuant à .établir et interrompre l'arc, on fait avancer chaque fois le bras 14 d'un échelon dans le sens lévogyre, de sorte que l'opéra teur peut régler le rhéostat dans ce sens dans toute mesure voulue. L'opérateur effectue alors la soudure à la façon habituelle et, dès que l'arc est de nouveau interrompu, en désexcitant l'électro-aimant 28, le volant 22 peut tourner dans le sens lévogyre sous l'ac tion du ressort 27 jusqu'à ce que l'axe 2.1, porté par le volant, arrive à l'extrémité de gauche de la fente 23;
Device for acting remotely on the operation of an electric generator. The present invention relates to a positive device for acting remotely on the operation of an electric generator, characterized by means for using for this action changes in the current supplied by the generator other than those which normally occur in service. .
The invention is advantageously applied to a current generator for electric arc welding when it is desired to modify or adjust the operating characteristics of the machine from a remote point such as the welding station. . However, it should be understood that, although the invention is described below as being particularly applicable to electric arc welding current generators, it can be used generally to act remotely on the operation of dynamos. , whatever their types and particular applications.
As those skilled in the art are aware, it is frequently necessary during an arc welding operation to modify or adjust the operating characteristics of the welding current generator. This adjustment may become necessary for a number of different reasons which need not be listed here.
With hard arc current generators, as they are currently made, it is necessary for the operator to leave the welding station and return to the generator in order to make the desired setting. 'there is only one operator present; or to carry with it a rheostat or similar adjustment device which, of course, must be connected, by means of suitable lines, to the generator.
In a particular embodiment of the object of the invention, the adjustment of the operating characteristics of a welding current generator is effected due to the repeated establishment and breaking of the arc. in a specific way and after a set number of times.
The device can be set up so that the operator can simply by interrupting the arc a determined number of times, either increase or decrease the flow rate of the welding current generator, an operation which does not in any way hamper the welding current. normal operator maneuvers while making a weld.
The drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention and a variant.
Fig. 1 is a wiring diagram of the device; Fig. 2 shows the mechanical characteristics of one of the relays shown in the diagram in fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a variant of relay playing the same role as that shown in FIG. 2; Fig. 4 shows a mechanical detail of another of the relays used in the overall arrangement shown in FIG. 1;
Fig. 5 shows, schematically, a simple form of an apparatus which the device comprises and thanks to which some of the results due to the arrangement shown in FIG. 1 can be obtained; Fig. 6 is a plan view of the apparatus shown in FIG. 2.
Referring more particularly to FIG. 1, the device shown is appli cable to a welding current generator 1 to which are connected external lines 2 and 3, which are respectively connected to a portable electrode holder 4 and to the part 5 to be welded.
The welding electrode 6 may or may not be fusible depending on the particular welding operation which must be carried out and the nature of this electrode does not in any way affect the operation of the device according to the invention. The external circuit of the welding current generator 1 has been shown as comprising an inter-polar field winding 7, an adjustable series field winding 8, a shunt 9 and a relay.
in series 10 which will be mentioned below in more detail.
The welding current generator also comprises a shunt field winding 11, excited by a separate exciter 12.
In the excitation circuit comprising the shunt field 11 is a series rheostat 13 with movable contact arm 14 of the circular type which is rotated by means of a handwheel which has not been shown for greater clarity. .
Before proceeding to the description of the positive device shown, it may be useful to briefly indicate, in more precise terms than above, the particular aims which one wishes to obtain by using this device. The latter is designed so that, if the operator wishes to modify the operating conditions or the flow rate of the generator of the hard current in a particular way, he will pass the arc briefly a certain number of times. The apparatus, which comes into action due to this repeated brief establishment of the arc, moves the arm 14 of the rheostat 13 in a particular direction.
If the operator wishes to modify the flow of the generator in the opposite direction to that which has just been indicated, he passes the arc and maintains it for a determined time, after which he establishes it briefly. vement a number of times, as above, to move the arm 14 of the rheo stat 13 in the opposite direction to that which has just been indicated.
It should now be pointed out that any apparatus of the kind which will be explained and to which the invention relates must be constructed in such a way that the operator can repeatedly pass the arc. several times before starting the welding operation and without modifying the setting of the rheostat 13. This latitude is necessary since most of the operators carrying out an arc welding can, for reasons which do not have need to be explained, briefly establish the arc at least several times before starting the welding operation.
Referring to fig. 1, we will first explain the device shown in general. The windings 15 and 16 are the windings of a relay shown in more detail in FIG. 4 and, when separately energized, they respectively move the arm 14 of the rheostat in opposite directions.
The relay 17, shown schematically in FIG. 1 and in more detail, according to various embodiments, in FIGS. 2 and 3, causes the excitation of one of the windings 15 and 16 after having passed the arc successively a repeated number of times and it also causes the excitation of the other winding if the operator first establishes the arc, then maintains it for a determined time and then passes it successively a determined number of times before starting the welding operation.
A detailed explanation will be given of the circuit shown in FIG. 1 after. have explained the mechanical construction of the relay 17 and the _ relay comprising the windings 15 and 16.
Referring more particularly to FIG. 2, the relay 17 shown here is generally constituted by a support frame 18 on which is mounted a vertical console 19 which, at its upper part, comprises a horizontal shelf 20. On the console 19 can turn around an axis 21 a steering wheel 22. The console 19 has a substantially horizontal slot 23, through which passes a pin 24 fixed to the wheel 22. The pin 24, which moves in the slot 23, therefore limits the rotation of the flywheel 22 around the axis 21. On the console 19, near the end of the slot 23, there is an axis 25 and on the inner part of the flywheel 22 is located another axis 26.
The two axes 25 and 26 are connected by a coil spring 27 which tends to pull these axes towards each other and, consequently, to move the flywheel 22 in the levorotatory direction around the axis 21 until what the axis 24, carried by the steering wheel, bears against the left end of the slot 23.
On the right side of the frame 18 is an electromagnet consisting of a coil 28 and a core 29. The frame 18 also carries a T shaped lever which can rotate about an axis 30. The lower part of the head of this T, 31, is placed in the vicinity of the electromagnet 28. The other part 32 of the T is directed upwards and a coil spring 33 working under tension, which there is fixed, is fixed at its other end by means .d'un lug 34 on the steering wheel 22.
The rod 35 of this T carries a pawl 36 via a pin 37. The pawl 36 is urged in the levorotatory direction around the pin 37 by a leaf spring 38. The pawl 36 is however held in a determined adjustment position, when the parts are in the position shown in FIG. 2, by means of an adjusting screw 39 carried by the frame 18.
An axis or shaft 40 disposed substantially vertically is carried, so as to be able to come and go, in the vicinity of its opposite ends in openings through which it passes, provided respectively in the frame 18 and in the shelf 20 of the console. 19. The shaft 40 carries a larger serrated part or forming a ratchet 41 with which the pawl 36 can engage.
On the console 19 is mounted, so as to be able to oscillate about an axis 42, a tent 43 which is normally pushed in the dextrorotatory direction, around the axis 42, by a spring 44. The part 43 is provided with 'a projection 45 which can engage with the wide part 41 of the shaft 40. The upper end of the part 43 bears against the axis 24 carried by the flywheel 22.
When this axis is in the vicinity of the left end of the groove 23, if the flywheel 22 rotates in the dextrorotatory direction so as to bring the axis 24 to the right of the groove 23, the spring 44 pushes the trigger 43 in the dextrorotatory direction until the projection 45 which it carries engages with the shaft or, more precisely, the ratchet part 41 carried by the latter. On the shelf 20 of the console 19 are contact blocks placed at a certain distance from each other 46 and 47, which are isolated from each other and from the body of the apparatus.
The tablet 20 also carries an oscillating contact 48, isolated from the contacts 46 and 47 and which, by moving, can engage with one or the other of these contacts. The axis 24, carried by the flywheel 22, carries an arm 49 of insulating material, and to which is fixed one end of a coil spring 50, the other end of this coil spring being fixed to the movable contact 48.
The tablet 20 also carries a contact 51 on which engages a movable contact element 52 constituted by a spring and which normally takes the position shown in FIG. 2. The head 53 of the pin 40, when this pin rises, bears against the spring 52 and pushes the latter by causing it to bear against the contact 51.
The operation of the remote control relay system shown in FIGS. 2 and 6 and we will first explain the operation of the rheostat control relay shown in FIG. 4, which will explain the operation of the remote control relay shown in FIG. 2 in combination with that of the whole apparatus.
The rheostat control relay, shown more particularly in fig. 4, com carries the coils or windings 15 and 16 controlling the rheostat and which has already been mentioned when FIG. 1. The relay shown in fig. 4 moves the control arm 14 of the rheostat 13 in opposite directions as the windings 15 and 16, respectively, are energized.
To connect the relay controlling the rheostat to the control arm 14, the shaft carrying this arm is provided with a pulley 54 on which passes a wire or a suitable rope 55. On the opposite ends of the wire 55 are fixed plungers. 57 and 58 respectively; placed in the coils or windings 15 and 16. The cores or plungers 57, 58 are suspended in the windings 15 and 16 by means of springs 59 working in tension and 60 working in compression, cooperating with consoles 61.
Coil springs 59 pull the consoles 61 downwards with a force just sufficient to counterbalance the upwardly directed pressure exerted on these consoles by the springs 60 and which is greater than the weight of the plungers carried by the consoles. When any one of the windings 15 or 16 is energized, the plunger cooperating with it is pulled downwards by first tensioning the wire 55 on the pulley 54 and, as soon as the wire is engaged with the pulley, that -ci turns in one direction or the other depending on the coil which has been excited.
If one of the coils is energized, just as the other is de-energized, pulley 54 rotates substantially twice as fast as when the coils are not energized rapidly one after the other. This is because the wire 55 being under tension from the previous stroke begins to move the pulley 54 as soon as the second plunger begins to move.
The apparatus which has just been described operates as follows: assuming first that the relay actuating the rheostat is connected to the arm 14 of the rheostat in such a way that, when the winding is energized, the arm 14 moves in the levorotatory direction and. when the winding 16 is energized, the arm 14 moves in the dextrorotatory direction, and also assuming that the operator now wishes to modify the position of the arm 14 of the rheostat to bring it to a new position, which requires that this arm be moved in the levorotatory direction, all the operator needs to do to obtain this result is to pass the arc quickly a determined number of times.
As indicated above, any apparatus such as that described here should allow the operator to pass the arc a specified number of times without making any change in the setting of the rheostat 14. This is necessary so that when the operator passes the arc the usual number of times to prepare the weld, he does not disturb the adjustment of the machine.
It will be assumed, for the description, that the apparatus has been adjusted in such a way that the operator can pass the arc five times without causing any adjustment of the rheostat, but that, when he passes it for the sixth times, this setting is made.
Referring to fig. 1 and 2, when the operator passes the arc for the first time, the series relay 10 closes the switch which is in lines -62 and 63. Line 6 2 is connected to one side of the circuit. excitation of the generator and line 63 is connected, via the various relays, to the other side of this circuit. Any suitable current source can obviously be used, but, for convenience, the excitation circuit has been shown as the circuit used.
As soon as the switch 64 is closed, the winding 28 is energized. It follows that the arm 31 is attracted towards the core 29 and the arm 35 rotates in the dextrorotatory direction around the axis 30; when the arm 35 rotates, the pawl 36 is lifted and moved to the left and comes into contact with the ratchet 41 and it lifts the axis 40 by a step.
At the same time, the arm 32 moves to the right, so that the tension-working spring 33, connected to the flywheel 22 by the axis 34, turns this flywheel in the dextrorotatory direction by an amount which depends on the ratio between the force of the springs 33 and 27, as well as the inertia of the flywheel 22 and the frictional resistance of its support axis. These different variables must be proportioned in such a way that, for a single pulse or several successive pulses of the electromagnet 28, the flywheel 22 is hand held in its extreme position of levorotatory rotation so that the part 48 is maintained in contact with block 46.
Whatever the number of impulses due to the successive establishment of the arc, the spring 27 always maintains the flywheel 22 substantially in the position just indicated, the amount by which the flywheel deviates from this position depending on the speed of the pulses.
As soon as the flywheel 22 turns in the dextrorotatory direction, by moving the axis 24 to the right, as we have just said, the trigger 43 turns in the dextrorotatory direction around its pivot, under the action of the spring 44, jus - that the projection 45 of the trigger engages with the teeth 41 of the axis 40. As this .denture has been raised by the pawl 36 of a step, the trigger 43 hand holds the axis in this raised position until either the pawl 36 lifts the pin even further, or the flywheel 22 rotates in the levorotatory direction, which causes the pin 24 to push back the trigger 43 by disengaging it with the teeth.
If we now assume that we have established the arc successively five times, it follows that the toothing 41 has been raised by four steps, which is just enough for the head 53 of the axis 40 to push the spring 52 to engage with contact 51. When contacts 51 and 52 are closed, the circuit is then established by contacts 46 and 48, passing through relay 15, which turns rheostat arm 14 in the levorotatory direction of a step whose amplitude depends on the stroke of the plunger 57, as seen in FIG. 4.
By continuing to establish and interrupt the arc, the arm 14 is each time advanced one step in the levorotatory direction, so that the operator can adjust the rheostat in this direction to any desired extent. The operator then performs the welding in the usual way and, as soon as the arc is interrupted again, by de-energizing the electromagnet 28, the flywheel 22 can turn in the levorotatory direction under the action of the spring 27 until 'that the axis 2.1, carried by the steering wheel, arrives at the left end of the slot 23;
the axis, moving towards the left end of the slot, engages with the trigger 43, disengaging the projection 45 of the toothing 41, which allows the axis 40 to fall back into the position shown on the fig. 2, under the influence of its own weight.
If now the operator wishes to turn the control arm of the rheostat 14 in the direction: levorotatory, that is to say in the opposite direction to that which has just been indicated, he proceeds in the manner next: it short-circuits -first the arc for a sensitive time; the short-circuiting of the arc has the effect of continuously energizing the electromagnet 28: when the electromagnet 28 is energized continuously, the spring 33 exerts a continuous traction on the flywheel 22 by pushing it in the dextrorotatory direction.
If the electromagnet 28 is energized for a sufficient time for the spring 33 to overcome the inertia of the flywheel 22, this flywheel rotates by an amount sufficient to bring the axis 24 beyond a vertical line passing by the axis 21, that is to say until the axis 24 goes to the right end of the slot 23. When the axis 24 comes in this extreme position, the spring 50 connected contact 48 has passed through the pivot point of this contact which is moved in the dextrorotatory direction to engage with contact 47.
The operator then establishes and quickly interrupts the arc a determined number of times and, each time, he brings the electrode to the work while establishing the arc, and the shaft 40 is lifted until the contacts 51 and .52 are closed. The repeated establishment of the hand bow. holds the steering wheel in the position it reached after having turned in the dextrorotatory direction, position such that the part 48 is maintained in contact with 47.
After having established the arc a sufficient number of times to close the contacts 51 and 52, the winding 16 of the rheostat relay is energized and, at each establishment of the arc, the arm 14 of the rheostat moves by. step in the right direction and the operator can continue to build the arc until the set point has been reached.
From the above it can be seen that all that the operator has to do to move the rheostat arm 14 in either direction by any amount is, either to start, to make short contacts. with the electrode until the desired adjustment has been reached in one direction, i.e., if it wishes to adjust the rheostat in the other direction, first bypassing the arc for a determined time, then briefly establish the arc several times until the desired set point has been obtained in the opposite direction.
The apparatus shown in FIG. 3 is another type of remotely controlled relay serving to obtain substantially the same results as those obtained by the construction shown in FIGS. 2 and 6. In the apparatus shown in FIG. 3, the rolling 28a is similar to the winding 28 of FIGS. 1 and 2. The winding 28a is suitably carried in a housing 65. In the housing 65 is mounted an axis 66 able to move in the vertical direction.
The shaft 66 carries, at its upper end, a weight 67 and, at its lower end, a piston 68 which functions in a dash-pot 69. In the housing 65 are rigidly mounted a number of pendant pins 70 which , at their lower ends, have stops formed by locking nuts 71, 72. One of these pins 70, that is to say the one carrying the stops 71, has a second stop 73. On the pins 70 , is mounted a bar 74 provided with openings through which pass the pins 70 and the shaft 66.
Around the shaft 66, and movable with respect to the latter and with respect to the winding 28, is an armature in the form of a sleeve 75. This sleeve 75 is, at its lower end, provided with pins 76 and 77 which also pass through openings in the part 74. On the pin 76 is fixed a stop 78, the role of which will be indicated below.
In the sleeve 75 is a second sleeve 79. The sleeve 79 is normally carried by legs 80 resting on the plate 74. The legs 80 pass through or vertures provided for this purpose in a plate 81 carried by the pins 76 and 77, at the voi sinage of the lower end of the sleeve 75. The sleeve 79 and the sleeve 75 are spaced apart in the direction of the axis by means of a coil spring 82, surrounding tree 66.
The sleeve 79 has a certain number of openings arranged radially and re parts around the circumference of the circumference and in which are housed balls 83. The sleeve 75 carries an equivalent number of adjusting screws 84 provided with cam surfaces on their inner ends and placed obliquely with respect to the axis of the sleeve 75, so that when the sleeve 75 is pushed upwards during the energization of the coil 28a, these cam faces push the balls 83 and engage them with the shaft 66, so that this shaft is lifted with the armature sleeve 75.
In the housing 65 are carried contacts placed at a distance from each other 85, 86 and 87. In the circuit are coils or windings 15a and 16a similar to 15 and 16 of FIG. 1 and actuating a rheo stat. In the housing 65 are mounted, so as to be able to oscillate, .des movable contacts 88 and 89 respectively, connected to a collar 90 carried by the shaft 66 by means of coil springs 91 and 92.
The place occupied by the apparatus shown in FIG. 3 in the circuit of FIG. 1 is similar to that occupied in this circuit by the apparatus shown in FIGS. 2 and 6. The winding 28a is in series with the contact of the series relay 10, so that each time the arc is passed, the winding 28a is energized.
Assuming now that the operator wishes, using the apparatus shown in fig. 3, move the arm 14 clu rheostat in the levorotatory direction, this is done by exci as the winding 15a. For this purpose, when using the apparatus shown in fi-. 3, when the operator first passes the arc, the coil 28a is energized, lifting the armature 75 against the stop provided for this purpose. The frame 75 rising, the. - cam faces of the screws 84 engage the balls 83, urge the latter into engagement with the shaft 66 and lift the shaft.
The frame 75 and the inner sleeve 79 therefore lift together, and the pins 76 and 77 lift the plate 74 until the left end of this plate meets the stop 73, after which the continuation of the movement. rise of the frame 75 causes the part of the plate 74 which is on the right side of the shaft 66 to move up and engage with the protrusions 80 of the inner sleeve, lifting the latter in advance of the frame, which frees the balls 83 and frees the shaft 66. If the operator does not immediately pass the arc again to energize the coil 28a again, the weight 67 lowers the shaft 66, overcoming the resistance of the dash- pot 69.
However, the dash-pot 69 keeps the shaft in the raised position for a sufficient time to allow the operator to pass the arc again, still lifting the sleeve 7 5 which carries the shaft 66 with it. by moving it to another rung. After the operator has established the arc five times or any other number of times that the apparatus can be adjusted so as not to interfere with the normal welding operation, the spring 92 passes past the limit. pivot point of the contact 89 which is then caused to rise to engage with the contact 87 establishing the circuit which passes through the winding 15a.
Once the contact 89 has been engaged with the contact 87, the operator continues to strike with the electrode at a speed which is commensurate with that at which the catch 69 allows the shaft 66 to fall back. between successive strokes. By continuing to strike with the electrode at the desired speed, the contact 89 can be kept in engagement with the contact 87 and the contact 88 be kept in engagement with the contact 86, so that the new strikes thus repeated excite repeatedly. Titions the winding 15a to advance the rheostat arm 14 in the levorotatory direction one step each time.
The reason that the contact arm 89 moves upwardly in engagement with the contact 87, when the shaft 66 moves upward, before the contact arm 88 moves upwardly in engagement with the contact 85, lies in the difference in the distances from the axis of the shaft 66 to the points where the springs 91 and 92 are hooked to the arms 88 and 89 respectively. If the operator had difficulty striking the electrode at the appropriate speed to maintain part 89 in contact with block 87 without contact 88 engaging with block 85,
he can simply wait after hitting the electrode the sixth time until shaft 66 has been able to rest in the dash-pot and then repeating the first five keystrokes he can continue to adjust the rheostat in the direction desired by means of another sixth strike.
When using the apparatus shown in FIG. 3, and that the operator wishes to move the arm 14 of the rheostat in the dextrogy direction, that is to say by energizing the winding 16a, he first establishes the arc rapidly a number of times sufficient to lift the shaft 66 until the spring 91 passes past the support point of the contact 88, whereby this contact engages the contact 85. The contact 89, as explained above, is first came into engagement with contact 87, so that the circuit is now closed by coil 16a.
The operator can then, by striking the electrode any number of times, move the arm 14 of the rheo stat by a corresponding number of steps until the desired set point has been reached.
From the foregoing, it can be seen that the operator can, before starting the welding operation, modify the operating characteristics of the generator 1 in any way whatsoever desired, simply by striking the electrode on the electrode. work in a determined manner. Thanks to the device described, the operating characteristics of the welding current generator are, at any time, directly controlled by the operator, at the welding station, and this control can be done whatever the distance. where the operator is located from the machine.
For certain types of applications and for certain types of work, it may not be necessary for the operator to be able, at his will, to increase and reduce the throughput of the machine. It may be sufficient that the operator can simply, by establishing the arc, decrease or increase the flow rate of the machine and, if it is desired to have this simple control, it is not necessary to use the device. we have just described and shown in particular in FIGS. 2 and 3,
and it can be replaced by the much simpler apparatus shown in FIG. 5.
In this figure, we see a winding 93 mounted on the terminals of the generator of the welding current. On the terminals of the exciter is also mounted a winding 96 controlling the rheostat and which, when it is energized, moves the arm 14 of the rheostat by one step in a determined direction. In the circuit of the winding 96 and in series with it is a switch 97 controlled by the movable armature 98 of the electro 93, this armature being connected to a dashpot 99..
When the weld current is open, sufficient current flows through winding 93 to lift plunger 98 by an amount sufficient to open switch 97. As soon as the arc is shorted, the amount of current in winding 93 is reduced, allowing plunger 98 to descend and switch 97 to close, resulting in energization of winding 96 and, consequently, movement of rheostat arm 14 in a determined direction. The operator can, therefore, by maintaining the arc a determined number of times, adjust the rheostat to any desired extent.
The apparatus which has just been described last is obviously not as flexible as that of the embodiments described above although, as has been said, it may be satisfactory for certain simple commands.
The invention has just been described in the case of an arc welding circuit and, more particularly, with a view to adjusting and controlling the flow rate of a welding current generator. It is evident, however, that the devices described are equally applicable to the control of any ordinary type of dynamo and an operator can, from a point remote from the machine to be controlled,
carry out this command simply by interrupting the external circuit of the machine a determined number of times. It should also be noted that the device described has been applied to the control, by means of a variable resistor placed in the excitation circuit separate from the generator. It is obvious that the windings 15 and 16 and the associated devices, shown in FIG. 4, could be used to adjust the series 8 excitation.
On the other hand, if desired, the relays 15 and 16 or two other relays of this kind connected to these relays can be used to simultaneously control separate control systems respectively in the series field winding circuits. and shunted or excited separately from the generator.
The device according to the present invention has been described in its application to an electric current generator and the modifications in the operating characteristics of the generator have been obtained by modifying the excitation of the machine. It can be noted, however, that the device described here can be employed in various other ways to modify the operating characteristics of the machine.
For example, it can be advantageously used to obtain the desired results by acting directly on the control system of the generator and with the help of an appropriate modification, for example in the speed of the control system, to obtain the results. desired. When the generator is driven by an electric motor, the rheostat 13 may be in the line of current to this motor. The rheostat control system could also be used as a means by which the generator drive device can be de-energized or stopped.
This last result can be obtained. by connecting the relay operating the rheostat to a switch mounted in the current supply line of an electric motor or to the throttle lever of an internal combustion engine when using an engine of this kind to run the generator. When the device is connected to the butterfly lever of an internal combustion engine, the speed of this engine can vary in the same way as the speed of an electric motor by means of a rheostat.
The device described above and serving to modify the operating characteristics of the generator is characterized in that it operates under the action of the establishment and breaking of an electrical circuit. For convenience, in the apparatus shown and described herein, the electric arc circuit has been used so as not to need additional lines supplied to the portable electrode holder from the generator.
Obviously, a separate circuit can be used and when this occurs one or more switches can be mounted on the electrode holder to establish and break such a circuit.
