Process for the production of a new azo dye. We have found that a new azo dye useful for dyeing silk, acetate rayon, tin-weighted silk, wool and leather in reddish brown tones can be made by adding diazotized 2-chloro-6-bromo-4-nitroaniline with 1- Methyl-4-methogy-3-ogyäthylaminobenzenesulfur acid ester couples.
Example: 69 parts of sodium nitrite are added to 1480 parts of sulfuric acid and the mixture is stirred until no solid remains. 277.7 parts of 2-chloro-6-bromo-4-nitroaniline (10% excess of the theoretical) are added to this mixture while stirring for two hours, whereupon stirring is continued, if necessary for a short time, until no solid remains. The resulting liquid is then poured into 4000 parts of ice and 1000 parts of water with thorough stirring.
After stirring for half an hour, the solution of the diazotized 2; -chloro-6-bromo-4-nitroaniline is filtered off from the non-diazotized base and slowly poured into a cooled solution of 261 parts of 1-methyl-4-methogy-3-ogyäthylaminobenzene- sulfuric acid ester added to water containing 4000 parts of caustic soda.
In order to keep the temperature of the coupling medium at 0 to 5 C, ice is added from time to time and 40% aqueous caustic soda is also added in such an amount that the coupling medium is only kept acidic on Congo red paper while the diazo solution is being added is.
When all of the diazo solution has been added, the dye is filtered off from the acid medium, washed with water and the dye paste ground with enough sodium carbonate to neutralize any remaining free acid and convert the dye to its sodium salt. The dye can then be stored as a paste or dried in any way.
The dye forms a dark brown powder, which dissolves in warm water to form a reddish brown solution. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it dissolves to a carmoisine-red solution, which turns reddish yellow after dilution with water. It dyes acetate artificial silk in reddish brown tones with good lightfastness.
