\ 'experienced in the production of photographic substrates from cellulose esters. It is known to use derivatives of fatty acids as plasticizers for cellulose esters and ethers.
For example, phosphoric acid esters of fatty acid alcohol, such as trioctyl phosphate, diisoamyl butyl phosphate, diethyl phosphate, butyl phosphate or fatty acid esters have already been used as plasticizers.
These products have in part compared to other plasticizers, such as those used as camphor substitutes and which dissolve or "gelatinize" on nitrocellulose, a non-dissolving or non-dissolving cellulose ester. precipitating effect. For the failure of the mechanical properties of films, in particular cinema films, it has been recognized as a significant advantage to use a non-dissolving plasticizer instead of an additive that removes the nitrocellulose.
Through the use of such "fellers": for example, the life of the films, that is to say the number of screenings in the projection apparatus, is considerably lengthened respectively. the number of pendulum hammers parallel to this running time is increased. In general, this quality improvement is also expressed in increased elongation and crease count.
This applies to nitrocellulose films as well as to those made from organic esters of cellulose, such as cellulose acetate, cellulose butyrate, and mixed esters, such as cellulose nitroacetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, etc.
According to the invention, a method for producing photographic layer supports from cellulose esters using plasticizers is characterized in that mixtures of substances are used as plasticizers which have an uninterrupted aliphatic carbon chain with 8 to 14 carbon atoms, apart from carbon and hydrogen, at least one , @ their atom, but do not have an acidic group and have at most a weak odor.
Examples of such substances are: fatty acid esters, fatty alcohols, esters and ethers of fatty alcohols, halides of fatty alcohols, etc.
Mainly saponified vegetable fats, in particular coconut oil or palm kernel oil, can be used as the starting material, or the mixtures of fatty acids that result from the oxidation of paraffins with 8 to 14 carbon atoms with air or with oxidizing agents as oxidation products, to be used.
The plasticizers to be used according to the invention can be obtained from these materials either by esterification of a fatty acid mixture or by reduction to fatty alcohols. The alcohols can also be converted into esters or ethers or, for example, by replacing the OH group with halogen, into halides of paraffins.
The plasticizers are expediently freed of low molecular weight, more or less strongly smelling components before they are used. The low molecular weight, strong-smelling components can be separated off either before or after the derivatives of the fatty acids are prepared from the mixture.
Esters of fatty acids and fatty alcohols, as well as mixtures of different fatty acid esters and different fatty alcohols, have already been used as plasticizers for cellulose varnishes; but such mixtures always had such a persistent and unpleasant odor that they could not be used for the production of photographic substrates. So it is understandable that the excellent mechanical properties of photographic substrates made of cellulose esters with such additives have not yet been recognized.
The plasticizer mixtures are suitable both for films made of cellulose nitrate and for those made of organic cellulose esters, in particular cellulose acetate, cellulose nitroacetate, cellulose acetobutyrate, cellulose butyrate and other technically usable cellulose esters. It is clear that not all products have the same and consistent effect.
Experiments make it easy to determine which of the proposed plasticizers "have the best effect for films made from a certain cellulose ester or cellulose ester mixture" in order to make the film pliable and resistant to mechanical stress.
It has been shown that the use of derivatives of a mixture of fatty acids is substantially superior to that of isolated, chemically uniform products from the mixtures of fatty acids. This is explained by the fact that the precipitating effect on cellulose esters is particularly great with the long-chain derivatives and therefore the excretion of the cellulose derivative from the evaporating solvents would occur too suddenly if a uniform, high-molecular precipitator was used. This makes the film slightly cloudy and even white.
If a mixture of precipitants with different precipitating effects is used, precipitation occurs only slowly and gradually, as a result of which the film does not become cloudy or white and the physical data, in particular the crease number and the elongation, can be improved. The products made from fatty acids with more than 14 carbon atoms no longer have such good properties as plasticizers; there should therefore be mixtures; which contain larger amounts of such fatty acids are not used.
Among the esters of fatty acids, for example, the esters of amyl alcohol of the coconut fatty acid mixture are very useful. However, methyl esters or ethyl esters have an odor that is too intense, so: that: they cannot be used. For the same reason, the nitriles of fatty acids are also unusable.
Of the esters of mixed fatty alcohols, acetate, phthalate and phosphate in particular are recommended as plasticizers for nitro or acetyl cellulose.
The proportions of coconut alcohol boiling above <B> 150 '</B> at 13 mm have: proven themselves well for nitrocellulose.
<I> Examples: </I> 1. 20 parts of nitrocellulose with 1.2.2 nitrogen are dissolved in 100 parts of a mixture of 8 parts of acetone and 2 parts of ethyl alcohol and, with the addition of 2 parts of amyl coconut oil ester, to form a film in a known manner. 0.130 mm thick.
If this film is torn in the Schopper dynamometer, creased in the Schopper celluloid folder and smashed in the Sehoppers pendulum hammer, values are obtained which are superior to those of a similar film which contains the usual camphor (10%) instead of the coconut fatty acid amyl ester are.
