Process for the preparation of 12-oxy-octodecanol-1. The main patent describes a process for the production of a dodecyl alcohol, in which an ester of lauric acid is produced using hydrogenation catalysts at temperatures between 150 and 400 ° C. with an excess of hydrogen until the carboxy group is converted into -CHsOH -Group treated.
It has now been found that 12-oxy-octodecanol-1 can be prepared in a completely analogous manner if an ester of 12-oxy-octodecanecarboxylic acids is used using hydrogenation catalysts at temperatures between 150 and 400 ° C. with an excess of hydrogen treated. The same catalysts as are described in detail in the main patent are suitable for the present process. The process can be carried out in the gaseous or liquid phase and both at normal and at elevated pressure, advantageously at a hydrogen pressure of at least 150 atm. To run. You can work continuously or batchwise here.
As esters, which are suitable for the preparation of the starting material for the present process, for example, we call: 12-oxy-octodecanecarboxylic acid-l-methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl ester or other esters of the 12-oxy octodecarboxylic acid-1 with higher molecular weight aliphatic alcohols, furthermore esters of 12-oxy-octodecarboxylic acid-1 and dihydric or polyhydric alcohols, for example glycol and glycerol. .
In the present process, it is also possible to start from esters of 12-oxy-octodecanoic acid-1, which were obtained from corresponding unsaturated acid esters in the reaction space itself, e.g. B. from an ester of 12-Oxy-oktodekancarbonsäiire-1, which was obtained by hydrogenation of castor oil.
The 12-oxy-octodecanol-1 obtainable according to the present process was not yet known. It is a colorless crystalline body that melts at around 65 and under 15 mm pressure boils at around 240 C. The body is soluble in organic solvents, for example alcohol. Like the lauric alcohol described in the main patent, it can be used for the production of wax mixtures and for the production of organic preparations, in particular textile auxiliaries.
Example 1 40 parts of a copper carbonate catalyst are stirred into 2000 parts of castor oil. The copper catalyst is obtained by precipitating a solution containing copper nitrate, aluminum nitrate and barium nitrate with a normal sodium bicarbonate solution. The precipitate is washed out well, dried and finely ground. The reduction is carried out in a stirred autoclave with hydrogen at 260 'and 200 atm. Pressure.
The hydrogenation of the castor oil initially produces 12-oxy-octodecanoic acid 1-ester. After filtering off the catalyst, the reaction product obtained has an acid number of 0.7; a saponification number of 7.6; a hydroxy number of 313. Pure 12-oxy-octodecanol-1 can be obtained in good yield by fractional distillation.
Example 2: 3000 parts of castor oil and 300 parts of basic cobalt carbonate are treated with hydrogen at 200 atmospheres and 230 ° in a stirring autoclave until there is no longer any noticeable absorption of hydrogen. The hydrogenation of the castor oil initially produces 12-oxy-octodecausal acid 1-ester. The product to be reduced is distilled after the catalyst has been separated off.
Pure 12-oxy-octodecanol-1 can be obtained from the distillate (yield about 90% of the raw product used), which has a hydroxyl number of 340, by fractional distillation.
