Description

Process for the production of a new auxiliary material for the textile industry. It has been found that a new auxiliary material for the textile industry is obtained if the imidazole mixture, which is formed by condensing o-phenylenediamine with the technical mixture of stearic and palmitic acid, as obtained from beef tallow, has an exhaustive methylating effect treated the means.

In the form of its mineral acid salts, the new auxiliary forms a hardly colored powder with the properties of so-called acid soaps. It is said to be used as an auxiliary in the textile industry.

Example: AATan produces a mixture of pentadecyl- and heptadecylbenzimidazole by heating 100 parts of the technical mixture of stearic-palmitic acid, as it is obtained from bovine tallow, with 41 parts of o-phenylendia, min which is allowed to cool to 140-120, whereupon 356 parts of the benzimidazole mixture are mixed with 1500 parts of trichlorobenzene and the mixture is heated to 150.

With constant stirring, 130 parts of dimethyl sulfate are gradually added to this solution and the reaction mass is then heated to 150 for a further 6 hours. Then 206 parts of finely powdered soda are added to the latter, followed by another 130 parts of dimethyl sulfate. After stirring the reac tion liquid for a further two to three hours at 150, the undissolved portion is filtered off hot, whereupon the reaction product precipitates as a colorless, crystalline powder when the filtrate cools, which is filtered off with suction and washed with benzene.

In this way, the quaternary ammonium salts of the methylated benzimidazoles of the formula are obtained
EMI0001.0032
in which heptadecyl and pentadecyl radicals are to be used in place of Ri, as a colorless, crystalline powder that is soluble in hot water with the formation of strongly foaming solutions.
