Device for sealing rotating shafts. The invention relates to a device for sealing rotating shafts, such as the drive shafts of pumps. Up to now stuffing boxes have usually been used for this; one has already used plate-shaped, resilient discs (membranes) that hold a hole corresponding to the shaft. These disks revolve with the shafts and press with their outer edge against a flat surface of the housing, where the seal takes place. The disadvantage of this arrangement is that such disks deflect only slightly, so that the sealing ceases after only slight wear of the grinding edge or with a small axial movement of the shaft.
This disadvantage is now eliminated in the device according to the invention in that on a sliding surface of the housing penetrated by the shaft a tubular enclosing the shaft and resilient in the direction of the shaft axis sealing element rests under pressure, the other end of which is fixed to the shaft connected is.
The drawing shows a longitudinal section of an exemplary embodiment of the subject matter of the invention applied to a gear pump.
The two toothed pistons 3, 4 rotate in the pump housing 1. Their shafts 6, 6 are mounted in the housing 1 and in the cover 2. The drive shaft 6 passes through at the bearing place the housing 1, it is therefore necessary to seal it against the exit of the conveyor. For this purpose, the housing 1 is provided with a flat annular surface 7 which is perpendicular to the shaft axis and against which a sealing ring 8 with a similar surface is pressed. This ring rotates with the shaft; it is pressed against the surface 7 by means of a resilient tube 9 firmly connected to the ring 8.
This is connected at its free end with the screw sleeve 10 on which a nut 11 is seated. Between this and the screw sleeve 10, the free face of which is conical, is located. a press ring 12, the bore of which is adapted to the shaft 5 in such a way that the ring can just be moved on it by hand. The sealing members 8-12 are located in a neck-shaped extension of the housing 1, which is closed by a screwed-in cover 13.
In order to now press the sealing ring 8 with the required pressure against the annular surface 7, when the union nut 11 is open, this together with the screw sleeve 10 and the press ring 12 is advanced by hand so that the resilient tube receives the desired pressure. The union nut is then screwed on. As a result, you press the, for example, made of bronze, the ring 12 against the hollow cone of the screw benhülse 10; whereby the inner diameter of the ring is reduced so that it comes to sit firmly on the shaft 5.
In this way, a double purpose is achieved, because on the one hand the compressed resilient tube 9 is held firmly in this position, and then the press ring, which is firmly seated on the shaft, seals against the discharge of hydraulic fluid completely. The cavities between the shaft 5 and the organs 8, 9, 10 would gradually fill with hydraulic fluid that seeps through the bearings of the shaft. If, therefore, as in the exemplary embodiment, the sealing of a pump is involved, the aforementioned cavities are connected through a channel 14 with the suction side of the pump, whereby the accumulating liquid is removed and at the same time the sealing ring 8 due to the external overpressure is pressed against the annular surface 7.
As a result, the axial pressure otherwise to be absorbed by the shaft is reduced. By appropriately dimensioning the wave-shaped curved resilient tube 9 you have it in hand to reach the required suspension travel, taking into account the sealing pressure to be applied, so that both the wear and tear of the sliding surfaces and any axial movement of the shaft is recorded. To lubricate the sliding surface 7, if the liquid to be conveyed is not itself a lubricant, the cavity between the neck of the housing 1 and the organs 8-11 is filled with grease.
The invention is not limited to the sealing of such pumps, it is much more applicable to all rotating shafts that are to be sealed against escaping, pressurized or vacuum conveying or propellant.
