Description

Process for the production of coverings of all kinds. As is known, linoleum cement consists mainly of linoxyn and resin. It has now been found, and the new process is based on this, that tall oil can be used at least together with drying oils, for example linseed oil, for the production of linoleum cement.

The tall oil is known to be a waste product in the sulphate pulp process; it contains 50-60% unsaturated fatty acids of the group Cis, depending on its origin,

30-40% resin acids and 3-5% unsaponifiables. Compared to resins and linseed oil, the price of tall oil is extremely low. This fact is of particular importance, especially in linoleum manufacture, where the price of the materials used is of decisive importance for the price of the product.

In this connection it is also very important that tall oil is available in large quantities in countries where wood pulp is produced. To carry out the new method can be proceeded in a similar manner, as before. After the siccatives have been dissolved at a higher temperature, the oxidation can be carried out in the usual apparatus; it has been found that the so-called Bedford method is best suited for this purpose, but any other common method of linseed oil oxidation can also be used.

Example: 300 kg tall oil are mixed with 300 kg linseed oil and at 180 ° C. 5 kg lead and 1 kg cobalt resin are dissolved. The mixture and 40 kg of chalk are poured into an oxidation drum and blown with air at 70 to 90 ° C. with stirring until the mass has become so tough that it can hardly be removed. After the cement produced in this way has been sufficiently stored, it is used in a manner customary for the preparation of linoleum mass for the production of coverings, either on its own or with the addition of other types of cement.
