Description

1'erfabren for the preparation of a valuable sulphated derivative of tall oil. The direct sulphonation of tall oil, a waste product from the manufacture of soda pulp, has not yet been described, probably not because the usual, known sulphonation process completely decomposes to carbonaceous, insoluble products.

It has now been found that a valuable, sulfated derivative of '1'all oil can be obtained if the treatment with sulfurizing agents is carried out in the presence of phenol, at least 30 parts of phenol being necessary for 100 parts of tall oil. A resinous, water-soluble body with excellent capillary-active properties is obtained. suitable for use as a wetting agent in the textile industry; in concentrated form, it gives precipitates colored with iron salts, which are readily soluble when diluted with water.

Example: 100 parts of tall oil are stirred with 7 0 parts of phenol and mixed with 100 to 105 parts of sulfuric acid 66 Be. The temperature of the mixture is maintained at 85-105 until it is water-soluble, then diluted with approximately the same volume of water and the excess sulfuric acid is removed by adding lime. By reacting the resulting lime salt with soda and evaporating the filtered solution, the sodium salt of a sulphonic acid is obtained as a hardly colored powder.

As a sulfonating agent, sulfuric acid can be replaced in whole or in part by chlorosulfonic acid or oleum.
