Gutter strip for automobiles. This invention relates to a gutter strip for automobiles. This member is made of soft extruded metal and comprises a base element provided with a raised wing forming a gutter at its lower edge and an upper wing intended to be folded over said element to conceal the fasteners which pass through it.
This gutter strip is characterized in that the junction between the upper wing and the upper edge of the base element is formed by a zone of linear weakening which is thinner than any part of the upper wing. higher, so that this wing only pivots around the line of weakness and thus retains its shape over its entire width, said line of weakness occupying a position such that, if a crack develops therein, this crack is located on the rear side of the base element and is therefore concealed.
In the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the object of the invention is shown, by way of example. Fig. 1 is a cross section of the gutter strip and shows the latter before its assembly; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the mounted gutter strip; Fig. 3 is a front view of the mounted gutter strip, that is to say in the finished state. The gutter strip is formed by extruding the metal from which it is made, for example aluminum, through a die. The shape it has when it leaves the die and before it is placed on the automobile is shown in FIG. 1.
It comprises a base element 1, a wing forming a gutter 2 and an upper wing 3, the latter being arranged to be folded over the front face of the base element, after the nails have been driven in, so that these nails are covered by the folded wing and are thus concealed. The base element 1 has a sufficiently large thickness from its lower end to a point 4 from which its front face tilts backwards to the upper edge of the element, where an area of low thickness or line of weakness joins the wing 3 to the upper edge of said element, at 5. The wing forming a gutter has, in the blank of FIG. 1, the same shape as that which it has in the finished gutter strip shown in FIG. 2.
In other words, the position of the gutter relative to the base element does not vary during the mounting of the strip on the automobile. On the other hand, the wing 3 is tinée to be folded down from the position of FIG. 1 to that of fig. 2, after the nails have been driven in, and to cover and conceal these nails. This wing has a special shape. It has a substantially flat internal surface 6 and its edge 7 is inclined relative to its main part 8, the internal face 7a of the edge 7 being inclined with respect to the substantially rectilinear face 6.
The extreme edge of the wing 3 comes into contact with the face of the base element at the lower part of this element, when the wing is folded down to cover the nails, the arrangement being such that there remains a space x (fig. 2) where the nail head is located, so that even if this head protrudes slightly, the beaten wing would not come into contact with it and would not be not deformed by it when the worker placing the band presses the wing to its final position (fig. 2) using a hand pressing tool.
The wing is folded down by shooting from the extreme upper edge of the base element, where the weakening line 5 is located, and the outside of the wing 3 has curved faces 3a, 3b which gives the strip a fluted or curved aspect, which aspect, when looking at the strip from the front, is accentuated by the presence of the wing forming a gutter, the upper edge of which is situated at a level much lower than the depression provided there between the curved faces 3a, 3b, this relative arrangement of the elements giving the strip, seen from the front, a wavy appearance.
Strips like this are placed along the top of the sides of the car to collect rainwater and direct it to an outlet at the rear of the car and, in most cases, these bands are seen by an observer standing next to the car, so that, seen from this point, the gutter wing harmonizes with the curves 3a, 3b to give the general fluted effect. Consequently, the wing forming a gutter cooperates with the wavy wing.
Since the metal of the band is aluminum, this metal is flexible. The wing folds around the weakening line when folded down. This wing retains its shape and remains in the position to which it was brought. As the free edge rests on the front face of the base element, without abutting any ribs or shoulders, it lends itself to the adaptation of the strip in a curve, when necessary, and if the metal tends to creasing or inflating, the free arrangement of the edge allows the strip to be flattened by pressing it to remove the folds. The gutter is high enough to hide the lower edge of the folded wing. The basic element is relatively thick and so are the gutter and the folding wing.
Note that the point 5 around which the wing pivots is located near the rear face of the base element and at a good distance below the upper convex surface 3 ", so that if it s' develops a crack there, for example, due to the folding of the wing, this crack is not visible from the front. The gutter strip can be painted before its installation, because if the paint occurs. crack at the junction line, the crack would not be visible when the tape laying is complete.
Further, since the weakening line has been formed as shown by thinning the base member, the free edge of the wing 3 descends on the face of the base member, when folded down. as in fig. 2, to a point lower than if the line of weakness were formed by trimming or thinning the wing.
In other words, in the construction shown, the radius of the arc of a circle described by the free edge of the wing when pivoting around point 5 is long, so that, with a wing of minimum width, the free edge reaches a very low point on the face of the base element, which, considering the number of cars to which the tape is likely to be applied, overall saves a large amount of metal, compared to the case where the line of weakness is formed by trimming or thinning the wing, where the latter would have to be wider to reach the same point on the face of the base element after its folding.
In addition, as the wing only rotates as a block around point 5 and retains its initial shape, i.e. without bending at an intermediate point of its width, no crack will appear on the front side of the fender and the paint will not be damaged.
The line of weakness is thinner than any other part of the wing 3. This line of weakness is located at such a point that if the metal cracks there, the crack is not visible. 'a point at the front of the strip. The strip can be painted with its assembly, the cracking likely to result from the folding of the wing taking place only at the back of the strip, at a place where it is concealed. As the weakening line is placed near the rear face of the base element, the movement takes place over a large radius, so the wing can be narrower and requires less metal in its manufacturing, than it would otherwise be.
