Process for the preparation of an anthraeene derivative. It is known that 2- (a-naphthoyl) benzoic acid yields naphthanthraquinone both by heating and with the aid of agents which split off water. It therefore had to be assumed that 2- (a-naphthoyl) -benzoic acid, even when heated with AIC13, converts into naphthanthraquinone. At higher temperatures, such as 150 C, this is also the case.
It has now been found that a compound with completely different properties is obtained if 2- (a-naphthoyl) benzoic acid is treated with aluminum chloride at temperatures between 80 ° C and 120 ° C . The new compound crystallizes in almost colorless needles, dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a light yellow color and green fluorescence and does not work like naphthanthraquinone or its "isomers"
with alkaline hydrosulphite solution in vat. The product is conveniently prepared in the presence of a flux such as trichlorobenzene or sodium chloride, for example in a NaCl-A1C13 melt, at a temperature of about <B> 100 '</B> C to prevent the formation of naphtha avoid thanthraquinone. The condensation can be carried out in an indifferent gas flow.
2- (a-Naphthoyl) -benzoic acid probably undergoes an intramolecular rearrangement and elimination of water with the formation of a derivative of dihydrobenzanthrone:

Examples 1. 240 parts by weight of aluminum chloride and 60 parts by weight of sodium chloride are melted at 90 ° C. in a nitrogen atmosphere. In. the melt is carried 2 7. 6i parts by weight of 2- (a-naphthoyl) -benzoic acid and stirred at about 100 C until no unchanged 2- (a-naphthoyl) -benzoic acid can be detected in samples. The melt is set with ice and water and the residue is boiled off with dilute hydrochloric acid.
To remove any naphthanthraquinone that may be formed, the product is poured out at 40 ° C. with hydrosulfite in dilute sodium hydroxide solution.
The residue is a gray-green substance that is crystallized from toluene for purification. Almost colorless needles with a melting point of 177 ° C. are obtained which dissolve in concentrated sulfuric acid in a pure yellow with green fluorescence. The compound is insoluble in watery alkalis, even when heated, the substance does not go into the vat when hydrosulphite is added.
If, instead of the free 2- (a-naphthoyl) -benzoic acid, its sodium salt is used, the aforementioned product is likewise obtained.
2. 120 parts by weight of finely powdered aluminum chloride are suspended in 150 parts by weight of trichlorobenzene and 27.6 parts by weight of 2- (a-naphthoyl) benzoic acid are added. It is fused again under nitrogen at 100 ° C. until no more 2- (a-naphthoyl) benzoic acid can be detected in samples, and the melt is decomposed with ice and water. After the trichlorobenzene has been removed with steam, the residue is poured out at 40 ° to 45 ° C. to remove the small amount of naphthanthraquinone. A substance is then obtained which is identical to that described in Example 1.
