Process for the preparation of highly viscous solutions which are soluble in acetone, resulting in acetyl cell lots. The processes to produce acetone-soluble acetates from triacetates are extremely diverse. It was proposed to make the triacetates or primary acetates soluble in acetone by heating them with dilute sulfuric acid, or by partial saponification with dilute mineral acids by themselves or in the presence of high-percentage acetic acid,
furthermore by heating with a little water and bisulfates, with sulfates or neutral salts. Acetone solubility was achieved even without water, by heating with glacial acetic acid, a little alcohol or glycerine, with and without catalysts; finally also by heating in 90-95% acetic acid to 100 - 110 'without catalysts.
In all of these processes, relatively high temperatures must be used, with the exception of those with acid treatment, which, however, results in an undesirable reduction in the size of the molecule and a corresponding reduction in the viscosity. The surprising observation has now been made that triacetates, treated with acidic heavy metal salts of groups I and II of the periodic table containing water of crystallization, are rapidly soluble in acetone even at room temperature.
Mixtures of these heavy metal salts recognized as being effective can also be used.
It has also been found that additions to these acidic) heavy metal salts containing water of crystallization can be used from other salts which do not belong to the aforementioned groups of the periodic table. Here it is not necessary that the salts to be added (of the other groups of the periodic system) have an acidic character. Therefore, added neutral salts also have an effect in connection with the) acidic heavy metal salts of the I. and II. Group of the periodic system within the meaning of the present invention.
The acetolysis is extremely low here, so that the products obtained by the process according to the present invention have a viscosity several times higher in solution than products of previously known processes. The high viscosity is a sure sign that a molecular reduction has hardly occurred.
The products produced by the process according to the present invention show such a high degree of viscosity that none of the previously known methods could not even come close to, as the following table shows, for example:

<tb> Method A 4% acetone solution and Ost's viscometer, which is described in the Zeitschrift für Angewandte Chemie 1912, page 1893, were used to determine the viscosity.
Example 1: 100 parts of triacetate, prepared by one of the known processes, were dissolved in 500 parts of glacial acetic acid and left to stand at 200 with 80 parts of ZrrClsH 2H20. After a few hours, the product is completely soluble in acetone. The precipitation takes place in the usual way with water.
Example 2: Cellulose acetylated by means of acetic anhydride and zinc chloride, after decomposition any anhydride still present can either be mixed with ZnC1sH.2H20 in the above ratio or the appropriate amount of HCl and water can be added.
Example 3: 100 parts of cellulose acetylated by means of anhydride and sulfuric acid, 5 parts of ZnCIBH # 2H20 and 50 parts of CaC12 # 6H20 are added after decomposition of the anhydride still present and the treatment is continued as above . Example 4: 100 parts of triacetate, dissolved in 300 parts of glacial acetic acid, are brought into action at low temperature with 60 parts of 3Hg012.4HC114H20 and continue as above.
