Process for the production of a bottle dye of the Anthraeen range. The surprising observation was made that the condensation products obtainable from glyoxal and anthron, its substitution products or derivatives, can be converted into new compounds by treatment with alkaline condensation agents, advantageously with caustic alkalis in the presence of an alcohol.
The products obtained differ from the yellow to orange colored starting compounds mainly in their intense red to purple color and their lower solubility in organic solvents. The compounds are vat dyes and dye cotton from the vat in red to purple tones with good fastness properties.
The present patent now relates to the preparation of a vat dye of the anthracene series, characterized in that the condensation product of anthrone and glyoxal is treated with alkaline condensation agents. The vat dye thus obtained is, when dry, a violet powder with a thoroughly metallic sheen, soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid with a yellow-green color.
He supplies a cherry red vat with akalic hydrosulfite and dyes cotton in real burgundy shades.
Example: 2 kg of the condensation product of anthrone and glyoxal (see Swiss patent no.129587) are added to a melt heated to 120, consisting of 8 kg of caustic potash and 8 kg of alcohol. The mixture is stirred for two hours at 120 to 140 °. The melt obtained is then introduced into water and the dye is isolated in the usual way, for example by passing in air. Recrystallization from nitrobenzene gives it in the form of green needles with a metallic sheen.
With the same result, you can replace the caustic potash with caustic soda or sodium ethylate; instead of ethyl alcohol you can also use methyl and butyl alcohol.
