Process for the production of condensation products of urea. In the main patent, a process is described in which condensation products of urea and formaldehyde in aqueous solution using suitable buffer substances (Pa = 4 to 7) are produced, whereby the actual condensation is advantageous at a hydrogen ion concentration of Ph - about 4 up to 6, while the dipping process is carried out at Pa = 6 to 7 and above.
It has now been found that the duration of the hardening of the reaction products obtainable in this way can be shortened considerably if the condensation product is added prior to hardening agents capable of forming acid during the heat treatment required for hardening Both inorganic and organic substances are considered, for example magnesium chloride, formic acid esters and the like.
Formamide can also be used, from which ammonium formate is formed by hydrolysis, which continues to react with excess formaldehyde to form hexamethylene tetramine and formic acid.
The products obtainable in the manner described prove to be equivalent to the products of the earlier patent mentioned, and the process has the advantage of a shorter production time.
<I> Example </I> .T A solution of 2-10 parts of urea in 200 parts of W is condensed with 800 parts of formaldehyde (30%) with the addition of 1 part of primary sodium phosphate. After the condensation, the hydrogen ion concentration is reduced to pH-6 to 7 by adding 4 parts of secondary and 1 part of tertiary sodium phosphate and kept constant and the solution is evaporated in a vacuum at <B> 50 '</B> . After about half of the water has distilled off, 2 to 5 parts of formamide are added to the concentrated solution of the condensation product.
The solution is then further concentrated in vacuo and the viscous end product is poured into a mold. After 24 hours of heat treatment in the drying cabinet at temperatures of 60 to <B> 80 '</B>, the product is completely hardened.
Example <I> 2: </I> A solution of 1200 parts of urea in 800 parts of water is condensed with 4000 parts of formaldehyde (80%) using a buffer mixture of 5 parts of dilute acetic acid and 1 part of dilute sodium acetate solution. After the condensation, 7 parts of dilute sodium acetate solution are added to the solution of the condensation product of urea and formaldehyde, whereupon the solution is concentrated in vacuo. Towards the end of the evaporation, a concentrated solution of -10 parts of magnesium chloride is added.
The viscous end product hardens completely after about 12 hours in the heating cabinet at 70.
