Tobacco cutting machine. The present invention relates to a tobacco cutting machine of the type in which stacked tobacco leaves are compressed as they are conveyed forward through a channel so that they exit as a compact mass through an aluminum mouth. mentation where they are cut by a knife moving in front of said mouth.
Machines of this kind are generally provided with a knife animated with a reciprocating movement, and the tobacco leaves are introduced intermittently through a channel, but as a result of the vibrations produced or) said to use very solid foundations, and the performance of the machine is limited.
With respect to current machines, the tobacco cutting machine according to the invention is distinguished by the fact that it comprises titi rotary cutting member arranged in front of the aforementioned tobacco supply mouth, the axis of rotation of the cutting member being practically perpendicular to the direction of advance of the tobacco leaves through the mouth and the end face thereof conforming, practically to the surface of revolution determined by the cutting edge of the mouth. the cutting member during the rotational movement thereof.

In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and?, The mouth 15, through which the cornprin tobacco leaves are expelled in the path of the rotary cutter 103. is provided with a movable upper jaw 16 which rises and falls in dependence on variations in the thickness of the tablet of tobacco leaves passing through it.
This jaw 16 has a surface 16a (FIG. 1) which rests on the tablet of tobacco leaves and constitutes the upper movable surface of the mouth.
Said jaw 16 has the shape of a caliper with 16v bosses carrying the axis of the upper front feed wheels 511, and also comprising a 16th platform forming a seat for compression springs 18. An adjustable plate 19 allows adjust the pressure of these springs using threaded rods 20, threaded sockets 21, helical wheels 22 and propellers 23 to which a rotational movement is imparted using a handwheel 24 fixed on the axle 25 propellers. In this way, the relationship between the pressure of the springs 18 and the opening size of the mouth 15 can be varied at will, depending on the different types of tobacco and the necessary advancement thereof.
In addition, the springs 18 automatically exert a compressive force on the tobacco which varies depending on whether the movable upper jaw of the mouth rises or falls. The movable jaw 16 rises and falls in a plane practically perpendicular to the axis of advance of the tobacco, and moves in guides 17 which the hand always hold uniformly perpendicular to the axis of advance of the tobacco. tobacco. Therefore, it is advisable to take precautions to avoid shortening or lengthening the upper feed belt 3.
In the construction shown, the support plate 14 of the upper feed belt is pivoted at its front end on the movable jaw 16 constituting the upper part of the mouth 15, and its rear end is supported by means of a support 26 forming a bearing for the axle 27 of the rear wheels 5 of the upper feed belt, said axle 27 being also pivoted in connecting rods 28 which are leveled on the axle 29 of the toothed wheel inter- the rear control toothed wheel 30.
which is integral with the upper advancing wheels 5, is kept constantly in engagement with the intermediate toothed wheel 121, independently of the variations in the size of the opening of the mouth 15. The position of all these parts, namely the jaw movable 16, the support plate 14, the support 26, the axis 27 and the connecting rods 28 is adjusted according to the resistance of the tobacco introduced.
The movable jaw 16 and the end faces of the mouth 15 are machined so as to conform to the surface of revolution generated by the cutting edge of the knife which the rotary cutter 103 comprises. Said rotary cutter 103 is actuated by the main shaft 36 using chain wheel 54, chain 52 and chain wheel 53.
The bottom or the fixed lower part of the mouth is formed with a sharp edge 31. This edge 31 can be established on a separate and adjustable strip-shaped piece 32 to facilitate its sharpening, replacement and adjustment, this construction per putting to maintain a sharp edge which acts like organ of chisel during the passage of the knife.
Auxiliary springs 33 serve to compensate for the pressure exerted on the threaded rods 20 and thus to facilitate the adjustment movement of the handwheel 24.
Means may be provided to indicate the adjustment of the plate 19 which determines the pressure of the springs 18. For example, a graduation may be marked on the upper side flanges 34 which, together with an index on the adjustable plate 19, can be marked. indicates the pressure applied for a diet thickness of tobacco leaves ÎL mouth 15.
Variations in the number of slices per centimeter can be obtained by changing the relative dimensions of the two toothed wheels 35 which transmit the movement of the main shaft 36. These toothed wheels are housed in a lateral recess of FIGS. 3 and -1 represent an embodiment of rotary cutter with a single knife, but one could use there, if desired, two, three or more knives. To the wire. 3. the knife 43 is cutting the block of tobacco, the tobacco being expelled through the mouth 43 (the opening of which is in this case of invariable size) by means of the feed belts 3 and 4.
It will be noted that the cutting edge of the 42 knife is at a greater distance from the axis of the rotary cutting member than the parts of the cutting member immediately behind it, thus forming an inter - free city avoiding the crushing of the material when it is expelled from the mouth 43 while it is cut.
Knife 4? is clamped in position on the group of discs 4.1 constituting the frame of the slitter member. by means of a clamping plate 45 (fi * 4) which is established in the form of a pivoting lever on an axis 46, arranged to rotate on it so as to clamp the knife, by the action of uri aie ex centered, rotating 47 on the lever part of the plate.
This eccentric axis 47 can be rotated by an appropriate key provided for this purpose, and acts on rollers 48 provided at the lever part of the clamping plate 45. A spring 49 is mounted so as to bear on the part- rte clamping plate lever 45 as shown in fig. 3 and 4.
It is thus ensured that the clamping plate will be able to dis-agitate automatically for the easy removal of the knife, when the eccentric axis 4-7 is turned to the position necessary to allow this clearance.
The cutting member 103 is wedged on a shaft 50 mounted in such a way as to be able to drive a rotational movement in bearings 51, and is actuated by the main shaft 36 </ B> by chains and chain wheels as described above. The whole of this command can be appropriately protected.
The bearings 51 which carry the Cou- can- member are arranged so as to be able to slide in (the notches 55 formed in a part with a trough 5 (i, to allow the cutting member to be adjusted from the point of view of its distance from the mouth 15. The trough piece .56 has an inclined plate 10i on which the cut tobacco falls after leaving the cutting organ. 56 and the lower part of the mouth form body Fune with the other.
The bearings 51 are held in position by means of cover plates 57 and the position adjustment of the aforementioned cutting member can be effected. by means of threaded rods with flounces 5th and with, locking handles 59.
In this way, the cutting member can be suitably adjusted in its position with respect to the direction of tobacco advance and also with respect to its distance from the mouth 15. Therefore, when the knife is adjusted according to a gauge, as will be described later, the cutting edge of said knife will, during rotation (the cutting member, describe a surface Cie, cylindrical revolution, a part of which coincides with the end face machined from the mouth.
The bearings 51 carrying the cutting member can be rigidly locked in position by clamping the cover plates 57 in the vicinity of the notches GO on the side wings closed at the base of the bearings 51.
Springs (There are provided to facilitate said position adjustment of the rotary cutter member and a protective guard 52 is provided to completely surround said cutter. This protective guard also serves to retain the cut tobacco.
It i) -, (it rtre established in several removable @ectioiis oti îître constructed otherwise in order to be able to remove it easily to gain access to the moving parts.
The tobacco cut by the knife .13 as presented at fi-. 3 passes into a cavity or groove 63 provided in the cutting member 103 behind the cutting edge of the knife. It subsequently falls from said groove 63 onto plate 107 of the trough; 56 from where he is led to the desired place.
When cutting at a high speed, the tobacco tends to stick to the knife and also to the throat of the cutting member. This is largely due to the fact that an air pocket is produced in the throat and retains the cut tobacco there instead of dropping it into the trough 56.
To eliminate this drawback, the variant of FIG. 6 comprises means for inhibiting a jet of air at the rear of the throat through holes 64 provided at the bottom thereof, this jet of air destroying the pressure in the air pocket to leave the cut tobacco deposit in the trough.
These means comprise a fixed air supply pipe, not shown, supplying pressurized air and supplying on the rotary cutting member a disc 65 provided with a light 66 arranged to communicate with intermittently with said fixed air supply pipe and which opens into a duct 67 provided on the cutting or gane. This duct therefore receives a jet of air from the air supply pipe when the aperture 66 coincides with the latter.
A number of three 64 is drilled in the duct 67 to bring the air jet to the rear of the trough as described above. Notches 68 are made in the disc 65 to allow it to be adjusted in angular position on the cutting member, so that the time during which the air jet is blown over the tobacco in the trough in the most favorable conditions.
It is desirable to provide means for allowing the position of the knife to be adjusted so that its cutting edge is located along the entire length exactly on. the surface of a cylinder which conforms to the curved face of the muzzle 15. For this purpose, provision has been made for an adjustment gauge 69.
This is shown in fig. 7 dotted and is provided with a slot 70 in which is housed the cutting bevel of the knife 42, two rollers 71 forming a seat on each side of the bevel of the cutting edge, and as the angle of the bevel always receives the same magnitude on each sharpening, the cutting edge will always project a predetermined distance beyond its points of contact with the two rollers 71.
A downward extension 72 integral with the gauge body is arranged to carry behind the pivot pins 46, while the eccentric pin 47 is rotated to clamp the knife in position. Using the same gauge for each knife, their cutting edges will always be spaced an equal distance from the pivot axes and in the same relation to them.
The rollers 71 are arranged so that the line connecting their centers is perpendicular to the bisector of the bevel angle of the knife.
The gauge is provided in duplicate, one at each end of the knife whose position must be adjusted, the two elementary gauges being assembled using a bar 713 (fig. 11) to form the complete gauge .
When adjusting the position of a knife it is desirable that the bevel thereof be pressed between the gauge rollers 71 with equal pressure at each end. For this purpose or can use an electromagnet. In the arrangement repi # presented in fig. 7 and 8, two electro-inagnétiqnes coils 7-1 are mounted on a slide 75 housed in a slide 76 and able to slide therein against the adjustable pressure of a spring 77.
The coils 74 are fixed on an ebonite block 80 which is pivotally mounted, so as to rotate about a horizontal axis, in a forked part 801, which is in turn pivotally mounted using the pin 81 on the slider 75 so that it can rotate about a horizontal axis which is perpendicular to the first mentioned pivot axis.
Thus the electromagnet 74 is arranged so as to be able to effect universal movement. A spring 79 exerts a tensile force on the electromagnet worm, the right (fig. 7). The block of ebonite serves to isolate the electromagnet from the rest of the niacliin. Slots 78 are formed in the cores of the heli-magnet coils to receive the bevel (the knife.
The operating instructions for this device are as follows: The knife and the gauge are first placed in position as shown in fig. 7, and then the electromagnet 74 is brought into contact with the bevel of the curitearr so that as a result of the pulling of the spring I9, the electromagnet and with it the knife, thanks to the magnetic attraction, are gently drawn until the knife is clamped between the 71 gauge rollers.
The eccentric axis 47 is then actuated and the knife is secured in position. The electromagnet is disengaged from the knife, either by turning the cutting member back a small distance, or by interrupting the electric current which feeds it. The electromagnet is then withdrawn and held apart. of the trajectory of the cutting member by means of the spring 79. It is advantageous that the power of this spring does not outweigh the magnetic traction of the electromagnet.
Alternatively, a small screw clamp can be used to engage the bevel. of the knife fully between the gauge rollers 71 art place (the above-described electromagnet. This device can be mounted (the same tisanière as the electromagnet and be interchangeable with it.
In the arrangement shown at the lie. 9, a sliding part 82 provided ('titi friction pad 83 at either lower end is actuated by means of a knurled screw 84, and guided vertically by means of guide plates 85. These parts are supported by titi trap door 86.
The knife 42 is clamped between the friction pad 83 and the lower spout (bed block 86 cry turning the screw 84, and the spring 87 attracts, by acting on the trap block, the knife between the gauge rollers 71 , as previously described.
If or) desired, the rotary cutter can be animated ('titi longitudinal movement of back and forth at the same time as a rotary movement to produce a cutting action in simultaneous pulling. A mechanism to print it A longitudinal back-and-forth movement is for example shown on the lie.
The rotary cutting member is wedged on titi shaft 88 mounted in bearings 89. A movement (the rotation is imprinted on it; ru means of a chain 90 and (the one eliaine wheel 91. This wheel it, chain 91 and the shaft 88 are connected between crix by groove and key so as to allow the shaft to slide independently of the chain wheel while being rotated by the latter.
A groove pulley 92 is attached at one end. of the shaft 88 and a lever 93 pivoted at 94 is engaged with this pulley and imprints a reciprocating motion to the shaft 88 and to the cutting member, said lever receiving king oscillating movement has nioven d ' a grooved disc 95 and a connecting rod 96.
The groove disc 9r5 is rotated by toothed wheels 97 and bevel gears 98 from a shaft 100. The shaft 100 is operated by a toothed wheel 99 driven by the not shown drive shaft (the The shaft 100 is supported in (the bearings 101 and the chaflie wheel 102 wedged on this one operates by the iitteri (i @ tiiaire of the chain 90 and (the wheel with cllaîile 91 the rotary eotipeur member to turn it.
Depending on the transmission ratio between the wheels at. chain 91 and 10 ?. the periodicity of the movement (the back and forth iniprini% to the rotary cutting member may be modified according to the number of knives with which the cutting member is equipped. In addition, it is possible to use the movement in one direction axial for titi knife and the axial return movement for titi next knife.
In the variant shown -à la lie. 12. the upper jaw 16 of the mouth 15. instead of moving in rectilinear guides 17 as in the fie. 1, is arranged to complete one movement (the limited rotation around the axis of rotation of the cutting member 103.
This is done by providing arms 108 on the upper jaw 1 (i which are pivoted at the harshaft ends 50 of the rotary cutter 103 as shown at Fig. 12. By these means, the end front edge 109 at the end. end of the compression face of the upper jaw 16 of the mouth is forced to move in an arc of a circle around the axis of rotation of the cutting member 103 under the action of the springs compression 18.
In this way, the interval between this edge 109 and the knife 42 does not vary during the lifting and lowering movements of the upper jaw 16 of the mouth due to variations in thickness. bundle of tobacco leaves.
It is not necessary for the upper jaw 16 to make an angular movement exactly along an arc of a circle around the axis of the cutting member 103: indeed, any other movement of the upper jaw could be sufficient, provided that the edge 109 thereof describes an arc of a circle around the axis of rotation of the cutting member 103. Thus, the upper jaw 16 could be established so as to move in curved guides provided in the main frame of the machine.
It should be noted, however, that the extreme front edge 109 at the end of the compression face (the upper jaw is, in the construction shown in fig. 1, very closely on the same level with the axis of rotation of the rotary cutting member and that consequently the upward and downward rectilinear movement of the jaw 16 will not cause large movements of the btird 109 away from the axis of rotation of the cutting member.
Instead of the endless feed belts 3 and 4, a series of upper and lower rollers could be used, these rollers then being arranged at successively decreasing distances in the direction of the tobacco leaf advancement, so in effect forming a feed channel of decreasing cross section through which the tobacco leaves are advanced and compressed so as to exit the mouth as a mass or compact bundle.
