Process for the preparation of a mixture containing mainly butylated a-naphthalene sulfonic acid in the core. It has been found that a mixture containing mainly butylated α-naphthalene sulfonic acid is obtained if naphthalene is sulfated to α-naphthalene sulfonic acid and condensed with normal, primary butyl alcohol.
The sulphonation is conducted in such a way that the α-naphthalenesulphonic acid is essentially formed, which can be achieved when lower temperatures are used, while when higher temperatures are used essentially ß-naplitalinsulphonic acid would be formed. One can, for example, proceed in such a way that the naphthalene is first sulfated and then treated with normal, primary butyl alcohol, with or without the presence of condensing agents such as concentrated sulfuric acid.
The a-naphthalene sulfonic acid butylated in the nucleus is also obtained if naphthalene is treated with butyl alcohol in the presence of sulfuric acid in such a way that the sulfonation to give a-naphthalene sulfonic acid and the condensation take place simultaneously.
The butylated a-naphthalene sulfonic acid can also be prepared in such a way that the naphthalene is first condensed with butyl alcohol and the product obtained is subsequently sulfated in the a position. The mixture containing butylated a-naphthalene sulfonic acid is soluble in water, has a Congo acid reaction and, like the salt mixture made from it, has strong wetting properties and can be used as a means for wetting, cleaning, emulsifying,
Suspending and dissolving water-insoluble substances in water as an additive in carbonizing, dyeing, tumbling, bleaching etc. of textiles etc. are used.
Example 256 parts of naphthalene are converted into α-naphthalene sulfonic acid by treatment with chlorosulfonic acid at a mild temperature. When the sulfonation is complete, 225 parts of normal butyl alcohol are added, -worauf man.die'Kondensation leads to the end by adding concentrated sulfuric acid at 50 to GO.
The work-up of the product obtained can be done in the usual manner.
