Process for the preparation of a quinone vat dye which stains violet-blue. The new condensation products described in the main patent No. 11.7993, probably of the following general constitution:

(in which R = an aryl radical and X = hydrogen or aryl or aralkyl) disintegrate, as already mentioned in the main patent, when treated with alkalis, with or without the addition of a reducing agent, in arylamino compounds of o-aminoarylmerkaptans in general For mel

These substituted o-aminoarylmercaptans are still capable of all the known reactions of the parent bodies.
Particularly valuable dyes are obtained from them if they are condensed with aromatic quinones and their derivatives, in particular with haloquinones. The dyes won in this way belong to the class of the quinone vat dyes; in particular, they color the animal fibers in the hydrosulfite vat in violet, blue to black tones. These dyeings have excellent fastness properties and are usually characterized by an unusual clarity of shade.
The subject of the present patent is a process for the preparation of such a violet-blue coloring quinone vat dye, probably of the following formula:
EMI0001.0027
in which one has the body of the following constitution:
EMI0002.0001
first treated with an alkali, where it was converted into the alkali salt of 1-methyl-2-amino-5-phenylaniino-3-phenylmercaptan of the following constitution:
EMI0002.0005
passes over, whereupon a condensation is carried out with chloranil.
The dye from the hydrosulphite vat dyes wool and cotton in a hot sulphurous sodium bath in a real pure violet blue. In the dry state it is a deep blue powder, shining bronze, soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid with a pure blue color.
Example: 15 kg of the condensation product described in main patent no. 117993 with the following formula n

are made into a paste with about four to five times the amount of water or alcohol and gradually, while stirring, in an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution, which is about. 12 to 15 kg of caustic soda and conveniently 5 to 10 kg of sodium hydrosulfite is entered.
The mixture is heated to 30 to 50 C for a short time; dissolving takes place with discoloration of the mixture; If necessary, small amounts of impurities that remain undissolved are filtered and the filtrate is poured into excess chlorine zinc solution which has been made slightly acidic with acetic acid. The zinc kidney capid of the new compound separates out as a thick, white precipitate; it is filtered and washed well.
The filter material is then mixed with five to ten times its weight of alcohol, acetic acid or water, 12 to 15 kg of chloranil are added and the mixture is stirred for several hours at normal temperature. The mixture gradually turns blue; the temperature is increased slowly to the point of boiling and is held there until the reaction has ended. After cooling, it is acidified to remove the zinc, the precipitated dye is filtered off and washed neutral.
The dye paste obtained in this way is suitable. ready for dyeing and printing.
