Cycle brake. The object of the invention is a cycle brake.
It comprises, like other known cycle brakes, two jaws intended to be applied on either side of the rim of the wheel to be braked.
But it differs from it in that the jaws slide transversely to the rim and are applied to the latter by ramps which have at least one movable member to which a translational movement can be communicated to produce the braking.
The accompanying drawing shows an embodiment of the brake, applied to the rear wheel of a bicycle of the so-called "half-stroke" type.
Fig. 1 is a partial side elevation of the bicycle; Fig. 2 is a partial view thereof from the rear, the wheel being shown in section; Figs. 3 to 5 are large-scale detail views.
Each of the two jaws a, b or a1, b of this embodiment comprises a metal frame a or a1, having a U-shaped cross section, as well as a rubber gasket b housed in the frame a or a1 and intended to be applied on one of the sides of the rim c of the wheel d. The frame a or a1 is provided with a cylindrical rod e sliding transversely to the wheel d in a guide piece f attached to one of the branches g or h of the upper rear fork i of the frame j of the bicycle.
A spring k interposed between the part f and a nut l screwed onto a threaded part of the rod e constantly tends to move the jaw a, b or a ', b away from the rim c. This jaw can nevertheless be applied to the rim c by a ramp in presented by one of the branches n or o of a caliper n, where a translational movement parallel to the. fork i of frame j can be communicated.
The two branches 7a, o of the stirrup n, o are independent of each other, are secured by an axis p around which they can rotate in a fork q of a slide r at their upper end and pass near their lower end in longitudinal slides s of the parts f, which stop their displacement outwards transversely to the wheel; the stems are also perforated to give passage to these branches.
When the stirrup n, o is moved upwards, the branches n and o, taking support from the bottom of the slides, act on the mounts a, a1 of the jaws a, b, a1, b and force them- here at. apply on the rim c.
The slider r is housed in a tube x fixed to a transverse part t of the fork i and is connected at its upper part to the cable @ of a Bowden control device of which. the sheath is supported on the tube x. This cable @ leads to a handle, not shown, located within easy reach on the handlebars of the bicycle.
The operation of the embodiment shown is as follows: When the brake is not in use, its various parts occupy the positions indicated in fig. 2. Stirrup n, o is in its lower position; the jaws a, b, a1, b are kept apart from the rim c by the springs k which press them against the branches of the. fork i, which is possible, thanks to. rounded cutouts v located at the top of the ramps m of stirrup n, o.
If we want. apply the brake, all you have to do is act on the control handle to force the slider r and consequently this caliper n, o to rise; the ramps m engage with the mounts a, a1 of the jaws a, b, a1, b and apply these to the rim c with increasing pressure as the jaw is raised stirrup, due to the shape of these ramps.
The brake described has various advantages over the known brakes of bicycles of the so-called "half-stroke" type, in which the two jaws are applied to the rim by bent levers pivoted on a common axis, one of the arms of each lever. carrying one of the jaws and the other arm of one of the levers being connected to the cable of the Bowden device, while the other arm of the second lever provides the fulcrum for the sheath of this positive device . It will be seen by inspection of the drawing that, in the embodiment shown, the removal of the wheel is simpler, the pressure exerted on the rim is greater for the same force on the handle. and the pressure varies linearly when acting on this handle.
The add-on parts / 'can be omitted if the fork i is positioned as required from the outset.
The arrangement of the ramps is naturally chosen according to the needs and the way in which the pressure on the rim should. vary.
It goes without saying that the brake can be applied to a front wheel as well as to a rear wheel and that it can be used for braking other cycles than a bicycle of the so-called "half-stroke" type. , eg an ordinary bicycle, a tricycle.
