"BACKPEDAL BICYCLE BRAKE" @
The object of the present patent is a backpedal bicycle brake of great power, operable without the drive chain of the bicycle, of great simplicity of construction, of easy maintenance.
The envisaged brake consists in providing the axis of the crankset or the hub of one of the cranks with a so-called freewheel movement comprising a crown and a ratchet wheel capable of being driven by the crown in the direction opposite to travel. , this ratchet wheel or pinion being furnished at its periphery either with a toothing on which a chain engages, or with a rod, the free end of which is articulated at the end of a lever whose The other end is articulated to a collar or ring fixed to the upright supporting the saddle pillar, on this lever acting a suitable return spring and being articulated a caliper, whose branches are guided on the tubes of the rear horizontal fork of the bicycle,
and whose ends of said branches carry the blocks

brake systems intended to act on the rim of the wheel, all this in such a way that by executing a back-pedaling movement, the return spring is compressed, while at the same time pulling on the caliper carrying the brake blocks, the latter can act along the plane of the wheel or transversely.
In order to bring out the above description more clearly, the appended drawings show:
Fig.I the view of the rear part of a bicycle showing in elevation the considered brake.
FIG. 2 a plan view of FIG. I showing the arrangement of the brake.
Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the brake control, along section A B fig. 2.
Fig.4 a section showing in detail the assembly of the freewheel device on the hub of the crank.
Fig. 5 a view of a construction detail in a constructive variant of the brake.
Referring to the figures above, I represents the wheel of the bicycle, 2 its rim and 3 the gear whose axis 4 ', carries at its ends the cranks, of which the one opposite the transmission chain bears on its hub 5, a ring gear 6, the periphery of which is lined with pawls (not shown) per = putting to drive in one direction (back-pedaling) the outer pinion 7 provided or not completely with teeth 8 on which the end is for example fixed at 9 of a chain 10, the other end of which is attached at II to the end of a lever 12 articulated at 13 to a collar 14 fixed to the upright of the frame supporting the saddle pillar.
On this lever 12 is articulated in 15 a caliper 16 whose ends 18 of the branches carry the brake blocks 19 intended to come into contact with the rim 2, The branches of the fork 16 are guided horizontally by means of the slots or slides 20 through which pass the guide heads of bolts 21 passed through the tubes 22 or attached to collars embracing these tubes 22

constituting the rear horizontal fork of wheel I.
Finally, a compression spring 17 is arranged between the lever 12 and the gear 3 to constitute the return spring of the brake.
The operation is easily understood as follows.
By backpedaling, the chain 10 is stretched in the direction of the arrow and, as a result, the brake blocks 19 are brought closer to the rim 2, while compressing the spring 17.
When the pressure on the pedal is stopped, the spring 17, by relaxing, brings everything back to the position shown in the drawings.
In fig. 5, there is shown a constructive variant of the brake, in that the caliper 16 is articulated at '23 and that the slides 20 provided in the arms of the caliper are inclined, which makes it possible to give the ends 18 lined @ brake blocks, moving towards the rim 2 of the wheel I in the transverse direction, and removing and replacing the wheel without having to touch the brake components.
The spring 17 can also be replaced by a leaf spring, one end of which is fixed by the collar 14 and the other end of which rests on the lever 12. Likewise, a piece of coil spring placed on the spring could be considered. hinge pin 13.
Instead of the chain 10, it would also be possible to envisage a small rod in the form of a connecting rod connecting the joints 9 and II.
As can be seen, the object of the invention can lend itself to numerous variants in the details or the constructive variants of its execution.
In summary, a bicycle brake should be considered as falling within the scope of the present patent. backpedaling characterized by the following:
