Process for the production of chrome-free glue from chrome leather. In the usual process for the production of glue (which also includes gelatin) from chrome leather (including chrome leather waste), the procedure is usually in such a way that the chrome leather or the chrome leather waste was first removed from the chrome by treatment with alkaline agents, in particular special lime, and a subsequent treatment with acids; whereupon, after washing, the remaining. Mass on glue liquor was boiled.
This process is very time-consuming and cumbersome and, in addition, it often does not succeed in obtaining completely chromium-free glue, since the acid generally only penetrates to a certain depth in the leather parts of the ear, i.e. the chromium in the deepest Cell parts initially remain undissolved, but after the subsequent boiling they go into solution with the glue or gelatin solution.
It has also been tried to bezw the chrome leather. to process his waste directly on glue without prior removal of the stems, with the addition of smaller or larger amounts of lime and other alkalis, e.g. B. Potash, potassium hydroxide and caustic soda. However, these methods have proven to be impracticable in practice, because the lime BEZW. the alkalis of the glue are degraded to such an extent that the (-relatiiiierbarkeit- and with it the viscosity and adhesive power suffer so much that the glue obtained is not or hardly usable.
It has now been shown; that you can cook in a very simple way by direct Ver directly to technical respectively. chrome-free glue (including gelatin) can be achieved if small amounts of magnesium compounds are added to the mass to be cooked. This removes the glue while the chromium compounds remain undissolved in the residue.
Caustic calcined magnesite is particularly suitable for this purpose. When cooking chrome leather waste with water in the presence of only about 1-3% caustic burned magnesite (based on the raw material), it is possible to completely prevent the chromium from dissolving during the boiling process and thus to achieve very light glue liquors immediately.
As has been shown, the addition of burnt magnesite greatly accelerates the boiling of chrome leather waste on glue, while the ability to gelatinize is not impaired in the least. In order to remove the glue from the chrome leather waste as completely as possible, several extracts can be made, possibly using fresh additions of caustic burned magnesite.
The glue liquor obtained through the boiling process can then be evaporated and dried in the usual way.
Instead of the caustic burned magnesite, other correspondingly acting magnesium compounds can be used, such as magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate.
