Le joint entre la surface supérieure de la bague et le fond -de l'orifice de coulée est rendu étanche au verre par de la terre réfrac taire appliquée à l'état plastique. Les bagues doivent quelquefois être remplacées alors que l'avant-four est chaud; pour que cette opéra tion puisse être rapidement et exactement exécutée avant que le joint de terre soit durci par la. chaleur, un moyen spécial est prévu pour obliger la 'bague à prendre rapidement sa position: le support 151 possède un rebord 1,52 à l'équerre (fig. 7 et 9), ayant un trou 153 qui reçoit une tige 154, représentée en mixte dans fig. 7;

In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the fore-furnace comprises (fig. 1 to 4) an extension 51 of the walls of the furnace, a partition or shutter block 52, a channel 53, a casting tank 54, covers, coatings, supports and means which will be described for controlling the temperature.
So that we can properly connect the front oven to the oven and align it with it while leaving it free to move, either with it or independently of it under the action of expansion or by the contraction of one or the other, the fore-oven is supported by a metal casing comprising side walls 56 and 57 (figs. 1, 5 and 6) and a bottom 58; spaces located between them receive a fugitive caloric material which surrounds the entire fore-oven.
One end of the bottom 58 is adjustably connected to a steel reinforcement of the furnace and the other end is supported by a pair of iron shoes 61 (fi, g. 1, 2 and 3), which can be used. wind slide freely in any direction, on a sole 62 carried by a pillar 63, when the parts expand or contract.
The pads 61 have raised parts 59 supporting the anterior end of the bottom 58 by contact with one of its ribs 60 (Fig. 3). This construction allows the rear part of the fore-furnace to rise or fall freely when turning an adjusting screw 71, or as a result of settling of the furnace, or by its expansion or contraction. due to temperature changes.
Thus the oven and the oven are free to expand, contract or lower independently of each other without detrimental effort from any of their parts. A tie rod 64, having a tensioner 65, is provided to hold the end of the baffle tank downwards.
Vertical and horizontal adjustment of the rear part of the fore-oven is possible, thanks to angles 66 (fig. 1 to 4) extending from the bottom 58 to the uprights 67 of the oven wall 55, each angle bracket carrying a bracket 68 with an adjustment screw 71 and a stud 72 (fig. 3 and 4). The screws 71 rest on a bar 73 bolted to the uprights 67. Each stud 72 crosses with, clearance of the holes made in the console 68 and the bar 73, and is provided with four nuts 74.
By adjusting these, one or the other side or both sides of the front oven can be brought closer or further from the oven; this can be adjusted vertically with respect to the oven by means of the screws 71. If the walls of the oven move under the influence of heat, the uprights 67 and the front oven move with the walls without exert no harmful force on them which could split or twist them.
Adjustable plates 75 (fig. 6) fixed to the walls 56 and 57 bear on the front part of the channel 53 to hold it firmly against the extension 51.
The channel 53 rests on refractory blocks 76 and on a box spring 77 (Figs. 3 and 5); it is held laterally in position by refractory blocks 78 and by angles 81. The space between it and the outer walls contains a heat-insulating material 82; the blocks 78 are carried by the coating with the aid of projections 83 (FIG. 5). A refractory earth seal 84 (fig. 6) is provided between the lower end of the duct and the side walls 56 and 57.
We can adjust the. height of the blocks 76 and of the base 77 by screws 85 (fig. 3 and 5) passing through the bottom 58. Metal plates 86, interposed between the blocks 76 and the screws 85, equally distribute the weight of the channel 53 and make it possible to adjust it so that it is at the desired height, regardless of the front oven lining.
The extension 51 of the oven is supported by crossbars 87 (fig. 3 and 4) carried by the angles 66 and which can be adjusted vertically by screws.
The channel 53 has flanges 88 turned externally (Figs. 2 and 3), which fit against the extension 51 of the furnace and form a seal of sufficient thickness to prevent loss of glass.
Channel 53 has a large cross section so that the glass moves slowly through it. The front end in. Is inclined upwards, in 91 (fi- ,. 3), and -is enclosed in an apron 92, which forms part of the lining of the fore-oven and contains material. heat-insulating.
The anterior end of the conduit 53 leads to the casting tank 54 which is held in place by a liner 93 fixed to the walls 56 and 57 of the main casing (fi: -. 3 and 4). Liner 93 also contains heat insulating material 82.
The fore-oven is provided with heating devices and means for regulating the draft of the combustion gases which they produce, by which the temperature of the relatively small mass of glass which it contains can be increased or decreased; it is thus possible to adjust the casting temperature exactly to the desired value for the mold charges. In conventional ovens, it is in fact very difficult to bring a large mass of glass to the desired conditions and to keep it there. The heating devices and the means for controlling the draft of the fore-furnace described can instead be adjusted independently of the conditions in the furnace.
For this purpose the heating or combustion chamber of the front furnace is separated from the furnace and heated by burners which project a flame towards the front of the front furnace from where it is sent back to the surface. glass products. of the combustion then escaping through a chimney placed near the furnace.
The heating chamber is separated into two chambers (Fig. 3), an anterior chamber 89, and a posterior chamber 90 near the furnace; these chambers are partially separated by a baffle formed by blocks 100, 101, 102, 103 and 104, which force the hot gases to pass from the first to the second while not being very close to the surface of the glass.
The anterior chamber 89 is closed by a cover 94 in the form of an arch (Figs. 3 and 11); two side closures 95, each forming a half-arch, and an inclined closing block 96, rest on the sides of the channel. A circular opening 97 provided in the parts 94. And 9; 5 gives passage to or ganes 146 and 172 regulating the flow of the glass.
The upper block 101 of the baffle which separates the chambers 89 and 90, has an opening 105a through which a burner drains into a lumen 106 formed in the block 102. This lumen, which is in the shape of a horseshoe, like shown in fig. 4, divides the flame into two streams which enter the fore-oven. In order to prevent the gas mixture from igniting prematurely in the lumen 106, the block 102 is kept relatively cold by a heat-insulating material 107 supported by the block 103 and held in place by the blocks 104.
The posterior chamber 90 is closed by side walls 108 and a posterior wall 109 which support a closing block 111. The block 52 separates the chamber 90 from the interior of the oven above the level of the glass. Each of the side walls 108 has a slot 112 through which a determined quantity of cooling air can be introduced; the closure block 111 has an outlet opening 110 leading to an exhaust chimney 113.
The separation block 52 forms a bridge across the extension 51 of the oven and is just in recesses 127 (Figs. 2 and 3), made in the side walls of the extension. Its position in the glass can be adjusted vertically so that it comes out of the oven at a higher or lower level. The extension 51 of the oven is provided with a cover 128 which closes the entire top of the extension.
The chimney 113 is provided, at its upper part, with a register 131 (fig. 1), able to pivot around a rod 133, which allows it to be tilted by means of an arm 134 connected to a operating rod 135. The lower end of the operating rod is provided with a thumb nut 136 by means of which the position of the register can be adjusted to regulate draft. In order to ensure the best possible effect of the adjustment of the register 131, the walls of the chambers 89 and 90 should be airtight as far as possible.
The openings 112 for the admission of the cooling air into the fore-oven are extended by -deas 138 of refractory material (fig. 4 and 5), which extend through the heat insulator 82 and walls of the front furnace coating 139. A ring 140 is attached to the exterior of each die and supports a hinged door 141, having a transparent window 142 of mica or heat resistant glass, for surveillance.
The door can be opened, to any desired amount, by means of a screw 143 (fig. 1) so as to adjust the amount of cooling air which can enter through the doors.
Over there. combination of the burner. adjustable chimney and by adjusting the cooling air, the glass delivered by the front furnace can be kept constantly at the desired temperature, despite variations in the temperature of the glass contained in the furnace and above the glass in this one. The products of combustion from the burner are projected against the front of the front furnace and returned downwards and backwards, as indicated by the arrows in fig. 3, so as to. go under the. baffle near the glass surface.
The force of projection of the flame can be adjusted so that it extends entirely towards the front of the fore-oven, or, on the contrary, so that it is forced to return under the, cane to a point further back.
The heating of the glass in the fore-oven can be altered in three different ways, which are: By increasing or decreasing the flame of the burner 105; 20 By adjusting doors 141 to modify the amount of cold air entering through lights 112, and 30 By adjusting damper 131 to regulate the flow of hot gases out of the chimney. The increase in the quantity of air admitted by the ports 112 reduces the effects of the draft of the chimney on the burner 105 in that the suction of the chimney is felt first on the cold air coming from the tubes. light instead of sucking hot gases from the front chamber 89.
If, on the contrary, it is desired to return the flame before it has reached the front of the fore-oven, the action of the draft is increased by closing doors 141 and opening register 131. By adjusting the burner properly, from the lights of the cold air and the register of the chimney, the temperature of the glass to be poured can therefore be increased or decreased as desired, and the glass can be maintained in homogeneous conditions.
The glass passes from the reservoir 54 into the pouring hole between the. base of a tube 146 and the top of a boss 147 (FIG. 7) surrounding the pouring orifice 148 made in the bottom of the tank. The position of this tube can be adjusted vertically (fig. 7) according to the volume of the loads to be molded; when it rests on the top -of the boss, the flow -of the glass through the pouring orifice stops (fig. 3).
From the pouring orifice, the glass passes through a ring 149 (FIG. 7) surrounded by heat-insulating material 82 and enclosed in a metallic re-garment 150, which supports it. The lower edge of the ring has a shoulder which centers it in the coating; the latter is held in a similar manner in a support 151 (fig. 3, 7, 8 and 9) for being able to pivot on the coating 93 of the reservoir.
The seal between the upper surface of the ring and the bottom of the pouring orifice is sealed against the glass by refractory earth applied in the plastic state. The rings sometimes need to be replaced while the fore-oven is hot; so that this operation can be quickly and accurately performed before the earth joint is hardened by the. heat, a special means is provided to force the 'ring to quickly take its position: the support 151 has a flange 1.52 square (fig. 7 and 9), having a hole 153 which receives a rod 154, shown mixed in fig. 7;
this rod is pivoted on an ear 155 projecting from the casing 93 of the reservoir. The exit ring is placed in the opening of the support 151 while the latter is lowered, and the support is then raised, forcing it to take its position rapidly, by means of the rod 154. Stops 156 limit up and down movement of the bracket, and latches 157 can. be rotated into position to hold securely. the support against these stops.
In order to prevent the glass from becoming too hard in the pouring orifice 148 and in the ring 149, when the operation of the apparatus temporarily ceases, a closure is provided comprising a metal cover 160 (fig. 9). which contains a heat-insulating material, and which is provided with lugs 161 which engage lugs 162 (fig. 7, 8 and 9) projecting on the opposite sides of the support 151. This arrangement constitutes a bayonet seal by means of which the cover can be put on and removed quickly.
If it is desired to prevent the cast glass from passing through the mold 164 (fig. 1) of the molding machine, a gutter 163 (fig. -3 and 7) is rotated which directs it towards a waste pit. This gutter is supported by connecting rods 165 fixed on a rod 166 mounted on the bottom of the lining 93 of the tank, and it is provided with a handle 167 (fig. 3) by means of which it can be brought to the position. indicated or move away from it. The slide is held in the desired position by a latch 168.
A flexible hose 169 brings water to its surface when in use (Fig. 3).
The pouring of the glass and its formation in molding charges is regulated by means of a reciprocating plunger 172 passing through the center of the tube 146, and severing blades 173. The mechanism for actuating and regulating these parts is supported by the front part of the fore-oven, and partly disposed in a box 174 and partly carried by this. box on the outside (fig. 1, 2, 10 and 11).
The latter is attached to a console 175, belonging to the la = térale wall 57 of the fore-oven.
The tube 146 is carried by an arm 176 fixed to a tube 177 movable vertically in slides 178 and 179 (fig. 11). The tube is removably attached to the arm 176: a flange 182 located at its upper part is housed in a recess of the arm, and a fork hammer 183 the hand holds on its seat by tightening a screw 184 passing through a groove of the dog and screwed into the arm.
The tube 177 is prevented from rotating in the slides 178 and 179 by means of an arm 1'85 (fig. 10 and 11) fixed on it and carrying a rod 186 which slides in an arm protruding on the slide 179.
The tube 146 can be moved vertically by means of a screw 191, the rod of which is housed in a bearing 192 of the slide 1.79, and provided with a crank 188 (fig. 12 and 13). . The screw carries a nut 194 fixed to a sleeve 195 which can slide in the tube 177. The pressure of the screw is elastically transmitted to the latter by a spring 190 housed between the nut 194 and a piston 196 carrying a city plug 198 and held by another pin 197 attached to the tube 177 (fig. 13). The socket 195 has a groove which allows it to slide relative to the pins 197 and 198.
The res out 190 acts as a shock absorber in the connection between the tube and the nut 194 and prevents the tube from breaking when too cold glass prevents it from moving.
Some of the active parts being hidden from the view of the worker, scales are provided to indicate the position of these parts. To indicate the. position of the lower end of the tube 146, a ladder 201 (fig. 11) is attached to the slide 179, and an index 202 is attached to the arm 185, which goes up and down with the tube 146. As the length of this tube can vary, the scale has slots for receiving set screws 203 so that the vertical position of the scale can be adjusted. The graduations of the scale indicate the distance between the bottom of the tube and the upper surface of the boss 147, the scale 201 being set to indicate zero when the tube is in its lower closed position on the boss.
Thus the worker knowing the spaces required between the end of the tube and the boss to produce the various desired weights of the load to be molded, can by observing the scale, place the tube at one stroke in the positions. correct without repeated testing and adjustment.
The plunger 172 is actuated periodically and regulates the flow of the loads to be molded: it is carried by an arm 204 (fig. 10, 11 and 17) in such a way that it can be easily withdrawn without it being it is necessary to change the arm adjustment. For this purpose, the upper end of the piston is. nested in a removable square clamp 205, having at its upper part a circular plate 206 which is received and supported in an opening 207 of the end of the arm 204, and is held in its seat by a hammer 208 pressed on the plate by a screw 210.
The arm 204 is controlled, for its vertical reciprocating movement, by a sliding rod 211, to which is subject, in an adjustable manner, a bracket 212 which is fixed to. its upper part. This arrangement allows the arm 20.1 to be adjusted so as to center the plunger in the. output ring by sliding the arm on the console 212 or rotating it around the rod 211. The console 212 carries a pillar 213 protruding above and below it and the upper end of which is surrounded, with play, by a square collar 214 (fig. 17 and 18) supporting the pin of a hinge 215, on which the arm 204 is mounted (fig. 10 and 11).
The collar 214 and the parts connected to it can be adjusted laterally, with respect to the. console 212 by means of hand screws 216 and 217 screwed into the pillar 213, at right angles to each other. the other; by rotating the. screw 217 (fi- * 17), the collar and the arm 204 are adjusted lengthwise; by turning the screw 216 (fig. 18), the arm can be adjusted transversely by rotation around the upper end of the rod 211.
The arm 204 can be secured in position after the adjustment, by means of an eye nut 218 screwed onto the upper part of the. rod 211 and pressing on a support 222, and by means of a wing nut 219 locked on the upper part of the support 213. The rod 211 passes through an opening 221 (fig. 10) of the arm 2f_14; when the nut 218 is loosened to allow adjustment of the. piston position, the arm can. rotate around the upper end: from the. rod 211.
In order to guide the piston in its vertical movements, the lower end of the pillar 213 extends into a slide 223 (FIG. 17); it bears a graduation indicating zero when the end of the piston is in the plane of the underside of the ring 149 (fig. 7), and divided above and. below zero.
Means are provided for imparting vertical displacements to the piston and for regulating, on the one hand, the amplitude of these displacements, and, on the other hand, their ends. A rod 224 (fig. 12 and 17), having its upper end connected, so as to be able to pivot, to the console 212 and its lower end connected in the same way to a lever 225, is actuated by a cam 241, propped up on a tree 358 (fig. 17).
The lever 225 and a second lever 226 are mounted loose on a pin 227; their relative position can be adjusted by a screw 230 screwed into a bracket 231 which belongs to the arm 225; this screw serves as a stopper for a beak 232 projecting from the lever 226; a clamp 233 is provided to immobilize it: The lever 226 is actuated by a connecting rod 234 connected by a pin 235, to an arm 236 actuated by the cam and mounted on a pivot 237. The city plug 235 carries a roller 240 (fig. 17) rolling on cam 241.
By adjusting the screw 230, it is possible to change the relative positions of the arms 225 and 226 and to move the stroke of the piston without changing its amplitude. By this adjustment, the piston is allowed to penetrate into the casting ring, to pass through it, or, on the contrary, to remain above it.
The means for adjusting the length of the piston stroke comprise an adjustable connection between the connecting rod 234 and the lever 226; this is notched to receive an ankle 242 (fig. 12 and 17) carried by the upper end, formed as a fork, of the connecting rod 234. One end of said ankle is threaded to receive a hand nut 243 ( Fig. 10) acting against a collar 244, which clamps the lever 226 between the head of the ankle and the collar.
The effective length of the lever 226 is adjusted by sliding the peg 242 into the. groove of the arm. by means of a screw 245, screwed into said plug and able to turn in a block 246 pivotally mounted on the lever (fig. 10 and 17).
By turning a knob 247 fixed on the screw -245, the pin 242 3e can be moved along the groove, and the stroke of the piston is thus modified; in order to be able to control this stroke, an index 248 (fig. 10, 12, 17), moving on a scale located on the top of the lever 226, visibly indicates its size. The groove of the lever 226 is formed in an arc, the center of which is the pin 235, in the position it occupies when the cam 241 is in that which corresponds to the lower end of the piston stroke. It follows that the adjustment of the screw 247 only modifies the upper position of the piston, the lower position of said piston being adjusted by the screw 230.
It is desirable to keep the piston inactive from time to time in a raised position without stopping the operation of the apparatus in third. This can be done by turning a handle 251 (fig. 11) capable of taking three positions, one allowing the regular work of the piston - (fig. 17), a second in which the piston is kept inactive approximately at its the highest working position (fig. 19) and a third in which it is slightly above its. highest working position (fig. 20).
To keep the roller 240 away from the piston control cam ,. the lever is provided with a disc 252 which has three notches 253, 254, 255 and which can be rotated so that one of these notches is engaged with a spring 256 which maintains it in any one shell of these three positions.
The handle 251 is fixed to a shaft 257 mounted in bushings. box 174 (fig. 12), and carrying an eccentric ring 258 fixed to it (fig. 17, 19 and 20) on which a hook 260 is mounted so as to be able to pivot. This hook carries a counterweight 261, which tends to make it turn to the right to bring it into the position of FIG. 19, where it engages a shoulder 259 of the arm 236 and prevents the roller from pressing on the cam.
During the operation of the pin, the hook is held in the operative position (fig. 17) by an arm 262 manufactured with the eccentric ring 258; this arm presses on a piston 263 which is pushed by a spring (FIG. 19) and which is carried by the counterweight 261; but he is. maintained in its position by the spring 256.
When you want to keep the piston inactive in its raised position, the handle 251 is rotated to engage the notch 254 with the spring 256, which slightly moves the arm 262 away from the piston 263, as shown in FIG. 19. In this position, the counterweight 261 tends to bring the hook on the shoulder 259, when the arm 236 is approximately clans its lowest position, the piston then being in its. highest position.
When, on the contrary, the arm \? 36 is in a higher position, the hook abuts against its end; but as soon as the arm is lowered the counterweight oscillates the hook and engages it with the shoulder 259 (fig. 19), which prevents the piston from moving downwards.
The roller 240 would be pushed by the projecting part of the cam at each revolution; to avoid this, the lever 251 is then rotated so as to bring the notch 253 into engagement with the spring. 256; the. eccentric ring 258 then passes from the position shown in FIG. 19, to. that of the fia. 20, and the hook releases the roller 240 entirely from the path of the cam.
When you want to put the piston back into activity, the lever 251 is turned to. position shown in fig. 17. bringing the notch 255 under the spring 256 and the arm 262 against the piston 263.
This movement rotates eccentric 258 upward, and roller 240 ends up in the path of the protrusion of cam 241, which, when engaged with it, lowers arm 236 sufficiently to release the cam. hook 260, allowing the piston 263 pressed by the spring to return the hook to the position of fig. 17, releasing the arm 236 and allowing the piston to resume its activity.
This construction only allows the piston to be activated or deactivated when the protruding part of the cam is in contact with the roller 240, thus avoiding the shock which could occur if these lifting operations were carried out when the recessed part of the cam is adjacent to the roller.
The load of glass to be molded, which passes through the pouring orifice at each operation of the piston, is cut by a shearing mechanism working in relation to the mechanism of the piston. Two reciprocating scissor blades 173 are arranged at. this effect below the ring 149; a positive dis is provided to bring them closer to or away from it, and also to adjust their relative position. These blades 173 are fixed on arms 266 and 267 (fig. 10, 11 and 21). which oscillate around parallel axes under the front part of the fore-oven.
The left blade, as shown in fig. 22, is fixed on a support 268 which has. a grooved body 275 fixed to the arm 266 by a bolt \ 369 (fig. 21).
A device is provided for adjusting one of the blades of the scissors with respect to the other to bring them to parallelism, so as to make a clean cut. For this purpose, the right blade, as shown in fig. 21. is. fixed to a plate 522 70 (fiCIg. 22, 23 and 2-1) by screws \? 71. This plate has cylindrical portions 272 housed in V grooves formed on a support 273 which has a body -274 to. groove fixed on the arm 267. Screws 276 pass with play through holes in the support 273 and are screwed into lugs protruding on the plate 270.
By loosening one of these screws and tightening the other, the blade can be tilted and locked so that its V edges are in the correct position with respect to the edges. V of the opposite blade.
Support 273 is clamped to the blade arm by a screw 277 similar to screw 2.69 by which support 268 is secured to the opposite arm. A pin 278 forms a stop for the end of the body 274 of the support 273 (Fig. 24).
A device is provided to prevent the lower blade of the Bevels from driving the upper end of the sectioned molding charge: A guide 279 is located below the blades and is connected to it. move- with the upper blade. As shown in figs. 22 and 23, the guide 279 is carried by a stud 280 fixed to the support 273.
The position of this guide is adjusted lengthwise along the stud bolt 81 by means of which it can be moved closer and away from the cutting edge of the scissor blade; the guide cannot turn around @du stud 280, being stopped by a pin 282 (fig. 22 and 24) fixed to the support 273 which has a bucket slurry receiving the guide.
The arms 266 and 267 of the scissors are fixed to the lower ends of shafts 285 and -) 86 (fig. 11, 16. And 21) mounted, so as to pivot , on the front part of the lining 93 of the tank; these shafts are connected to move together by means of toothed segments 287; an adjustable connection exists between them and one of the segments. Each segment is provided with a finger 288 which is rigidly connected to the arm by means of a stop screw 289 bearing on the opposite faces of the finger. By -adjusting these screws, the meeting of the two blades of the chisel can be adjusted so that it occurs in the center of the vein of glass which must be separated, or elsewhere, if desired.
The blades of the scissors are actuated for their cutting movement by a spring 290 connected to the arm 266, and for their opening movement by a two-part connecting rod 291, connected by a universal joint to the arm 267; this connecting rod is actuated by a lever 292 itself actuated by a cam 293 and by a return spring 294 (fig. 10 and 11) and mounted so as to pivot on the box 174. The relationship between the lever 292 and the blades of the scissors can be adjusted so as to obtain more or less coverage of the blades in their closed position; this adjustment is made by means of a hand wheel 295 fixed on a screw having a left pitch and a right pitch and connecting the two parts of the connecting rod 291.
An index 297 is provided to indicate on a graduation of the handwheel hub the adjustment of the blades. Means are provided for vertically adjusting one of the blades of the scissors or both at the same time in order to bring them closer to or away from the pouring orifice. When it is desired to change the level of the separation plane in this way so as to cut the vein of glass more or less high, the two arms of the scissors are adjusted together maintaining the relationship established between the two blades for the sectioning.
This vertical adjustment is ob held by the fact that the shafts 285 and 286, supporting the scissors are mounted on a slide 301 (fig. 10, 11 and 16) which is carried in a vertical slide formed on the. front part of the coating 93 of the reservoir, and which is blocked by means of plates 302 (fig. 10). To adjust vertically the. slide, we loosen a locking screw 303 (fig. 11) and turn another screw 304 (fig. 16), which is housed in a projection 305 made on the slide 301, and which is screwed into a nipple of the covering 93 of the tank.
By rotating this screw 304, the slide and the entire shearing mechanism supported by it are raised or lowered.
A result of the change thus effected in the sectioning plane is to modify the shape of the end of the charge to be molded; also means are provided to visibly indicate the level of the sectioning plane. A scale 306 (Fig. 11) moves with slide 301 and should be read in relation to the top. of the. plate 302 on the right. The scale is preferably graduated to indicate the distance from the bottom of the. ring 149 (fig. 70) to the sectioning plane, as indicated by the letter x in said fig. 7.
Tree 285, which. supports the arm 266, is provided with pads 307 (fig. 11) mounted directly in the. slide 301. To allow the adjustment of one of the blades of the buckets so as to bring it into a suitable cutting position relative to the other blade, the shaft 286, which carries the arm 267, is in. @ rtë by a socket = 308 (fig. 11 and 16). It is also provided with ball bearings 309 which allow it to oscillate in the sleeve 308, but whose longitudinal movement is prevented by a cap 310 screwed into the sleeve 308 and resting on the top of the upper bearing 309.
The socket 308 carries a projection 311 (fig. 11), which is threaded to receive a screw 312 mounted in the slide 301. This screw is provided with a handwheel 313, by means of which it can be rotated to move. vertically the sleeve 308 in the slide 301, thus adjusting the upper blade of the scissors carried by the arm 267 by bringing it closer to or away from the lower blade.
The scissors can be kept open in the inactive position by a latch 316 '(fig. 11) cooperating with a notch of a plate 317, the latch being provided with a lever 318. By moving the cam lever 292 slightly more far than the position to which it is brought by the cam 293, the latch enters the notch from which it can be withdrawn by the. lever 318.
When the scissors are in position or green, as shown on the left of fig. 7 and in fig. 10, they are cooled by a stream of air -and greased. For this purpose, there is provided on each side of the bottom of the tank an air chamber 319 located approximately above each of the blades when the latter are in the open position. The bottom of the chamber is closed by a plate 321 having. a series of holes through which air is projected onto the cutting edge of the scissor blades, as shown by the arrow in fig. 7.
These holes are inclined in an opposite direction to the exit of the glass so that air does not reach the glass, and are preferably arranged to match the shape of the cutting edge. scissor blades. Each chamber 319 is connected by a pipe 323 (FIG. 11) to a source of pressurized air.
The blades of the scissors are sprayed with oil or another liquid through a pipe 324 (fig. 7 and 11) connected to another pipe 325 fixed to the plate 321. The inner end of this pipe opens into a nozzle 326 having a tapered end passing through a larger diameter opening in the. plate 321. The oil from the nozzle 326, which can be discharged continuously or intermittently, is blown onto the scissor blades in the form of a mist by the air passing through the opening of the nozzle. . plate 321 around the nozzle 396.
Ln mechanism is provided to adjust the timing of the work of one or the other of the two mechanisms (control mechanism of the pis ton, and control mechanism of the scissors), the latter being driven by the same source of force. This adjustment is applied to the mechanism controlling the piston to vary the moment at which the movements of the piston take place relative to the moment when the sectioning of the glass takes place. For this purpose, the two mechanisms are driven by a shaft 354 (fi- ,. 10, 1. and 11) mounted in the box 174 and which carries a worm 355 (fig. 12 and 14) en.prise with a toothed wheel 356. This has a hollow hub carried by a bearing of the box 174 and has a base 357 to which the. cam 293.
The rear face of the wheel 356 carries a conical toothing 359 in mesh with a idler pinion 360 which meshes with a conical toothed wheel 361 having a hollow hub 362 carried by a bearing of the box 174 and provided with a flange 363 on which the . cam 241 actuating piston 241 is fixed. The idler gear 360 is carried by a hub 3.65 fixed on the shaft 358, and is engaged with the toothed wheels 359 and 361. The first of these here turns in the direction of the arrow (fig. 12), and :, by idler gear 360. rotates bevel gear 361 and cam 241 in the opposite direction.
To change the relative angular position of the two bevel gears: 359 and 361, and thus adjust the moments of the cutting operation, taking place by the, cam 2q.3. and with the movements of the piston taking place by the cam 241, means are provided for angularly moving the idler gear 360 around the axis of the shaft 358. The hub 365 is provided with an arm 366 (fig. 12, 14 and 15), the upper end of which is formed as a fork and is engaged between a collar 367, fixed to a rod 368, and the end of a tubular screw 369.
By adjusting the screw lengthwise, arm 3-66 and idle gear 360 are rotated around shaft 3.58, which changes the relative position of the two bevel wheels driven by the idle gear. The screw 369 is screwed into a cap 370 fixed to the box 174, and is fitted with a handwheel 371. To lock the arm 366 in the desired position, the rod 368 carries a fixed ring 372 threaded to receive a screw. stopper 373 which can be tightened to immobilize the end of the arm 366 between the collar 367 and the tube screw 369. The cap 370 is split and is provided with a set screw 374 to immobilize the tube screw 369.
In order to be able to establish the relation between the moments when the work of the blades takes place and that when the piston works in such a way as to obtain results corresponding to the previous experience, an indicator has been provided; the end of the shaft $ 35 (fig. 12) has an index 376 moving on a scale 377 fixed on the machine and graduated according to the previous settings. When adjusting the 3-66 arm using the handwheel at. hand 371, this index 376 moves in a corresponding manner on the scale. It is connected to the end of shaft 358 by a key and is tightened by a thumb screw 378.
The operation of the neck device emerges from the description which has just been given of its parts. The means for closing, for stopping, for cutting the vein of glass are capable of all the necessary adjustments without interrupting the continuous work of the machine.
A complete apparatus has been described for taking the glass from the melting tank and delivering it as separate melt charges, but many of the details disclosed can be usefully employed in other combinations. The illustrated embodiment of the present invention has been chosen for explanation only; the construction details and arrangement shown and described can be varied in various ways while remaining within the scope of the claim.
