(fig.
Process for treating granular and pulverulent materials with a gas, and installation for implementing this process. The present invention comprises a process for the treatment with a gas, of granular and pulverulent materials, according to which the gas is passed through a layer of the material, disposed on a gas permeable support. The invention further comprises an installation for the implementation of this process.
Said method can be used, for example, to heat the material, to cool it, or even to subject it to chemical modifications, such as, for example, the artificial aging of the cement by means of carbon dioxide.
In the known processes, it is customary to use a horizontal grid or another similar support on which the material moves while being moved, for example, by scrapers, or else to use a so-called mobile grid, c 'that is, a horizontal grid which moves itself. When scrapers or the like are employed in conjunction with a solid grid, the material layer is extremely uneven and as a result the processing is not uniform. In addition, the use of a movable grid is often inconvenient for various reasons.
The method according to the present invention is characterized in that the layer of material is lowered onto the support, which is inclined and forms with the horizontal an angle smaller than the maximum angle at which no displacement occurs between breaking up of the material and the support, under the influence of gravity, acting internally in said layer, so that it moves as a whole and without practically occurring local slips in it .
In the description which follows, the term "angle of repose" will be used as the maximum angle under which a mass of material will remain stationary on the inclined support, without any grain or particle of the material moving by. relative to the other grains or particles of the mass, or without the whole mass moving relative to the support under the influence of gravity.
The angle at which the support is placed is important, because if the support is placed at an angle such that the material tends to descend on it, sliding under the influence of gravity, the movement is irregular and this results in non-uniform processing. However, if the angle is only slightly smaller than the angle of repose, very little force is required to force the layer of material on the support to descend, and it has been found that if it is is subjected to a suitable internal action, preferably at its lowest part, the diaper will move as a whole, even when the internal action is applied only to a few places in the diaper.
The reason for this is that the friction between the grains or particles composing the layer is greater than the friction between the layer considered as a whole and the inclined support, so that the internal action can overcome this last friction, but not the first. If the gas flows first through the carrier and then through the material, the carrier should be tilted at a smaller angle than if the gas is flowing in the opposite direction.
As the layer moves uniformly as a whole, the gas treatment is uniform and effective. In addition, no dust develops as the material descends onto the support, as opposed to methods in which the parts of the layer move relative to each other giving considerable dust development.
The absence of dust is particularly important in the case of cooling cement klinkers or other similar materials coming out in a hot state from a rotary kiln or other kilns of different systems.
The process of the invention can therefore be applied in a particularly advantageous manner to the cooling of such materials, and the gas which is employed for the cooling and which, therefore, is heated, can be used as the cooling gas. secondary air for heating the furnace.
Said process can also be used advantageously in the manufacture of cement, for example for the preliminary heating of the raw material sent to a furnace, by means of the hot gases coming from the furnace, or for the artificial aging of the cement.
The installation for implementing the method of the invention therefore comprises a support permeable to gas, intended to receive a layer of the material to be treated and to be traversed transversely by the treatment gas.
This installation is characterized in that said support is inclined and forms with the horizontal an angle smaller than the maximum angle under which no displacement occurs # under the influence of gravity, between pieces of the material and the support , and in that means are provided to act in the layer of material, in order to oblige this layer to move as a whole while descending on the support,
without practically occurring local slips in the layer.
In one embodiment of the plant used for cooling klinkers of cement or the like, the support may be disposed immediately below the outlet of the furnace.
The line of greatest slope of this support can be arranged transversely to the axis of the furnace, but the support can also be in the extension of the furnace itself, that is to say that the material can descend on the support tilted in the same general direction as it descends into the oven or in the opposite direction.
It is preferable to exert the internal action using a movable member disposed parallel to the support and spaced therefrom by a distance at least equal to the dimension of the largest grains or particles of the material. This member can receive a back and forth movement in the diaper and it will obviously have a shape such that while applying the necessary impulses to the diaper to force it to descend on the support, it can go up through the diaper. without causing appreciable disturbance in the diaper.
It has been found that the desired result can be obtained by a member comprising several bars arranged to move longitudinally in their own plane, parallel to the direction of movement of the material descending on the support.
It is desirable to prevent the material from falling through the inclined support and, for this purpose, the latter may have covered openings, through which gas can pass, the covering of the openings preventing the material from falling through the openings. openings, or the support may be a stepped grid, i.e. formed of a series of parallel transverse plates, the lower edge of each plate or row of plates covering the upper edge of the next plate or row , but leaving a narrow day through which gas can pass.
Two embodiments of the installation that the invention comprises are shown, by way of examples ,. in the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 is an axial vertical section of the first embodiment, this view showing the unloading end of a rotary kiln, as well as a support functioning as a cooler.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along line 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is the diagram of an electric circuit for controlling a motor actuating the means acting in the layer.
Fig. 4 is a section on a large scale taken along line 4-4 of FIG. 2.
Fig. 5 is a section taken along line 5-5 of FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the unloading end of a rotary kiln cooperating with a support forming a cooler, this assembly constituting a second embodiment of the installation. In this embodiment, the axis of the re-cooler extends in the same general direction as the axis of the oven instead of extending transversely to this axis, as in FIG. 1.
Fig. 7 is a vertical cross section taken along line 7-7 of FIG. 6.
Fig. 8 is a vertical cross section taken along line 8-8 of FIG. 6, and fig. 9 is a plan of a variation of the lower part of some of the bars acting in the layer of material and having a reciprocating movement above the support, these bars intended to facilitate the movement. of the lowest and coldest part of the material layer.
With reference to fig. 1 to 5, cement is fired in a rotary kiln 1, having a refractory lining 2 and carried by rings 3 and by rollers (not shown), which are themselves supported on foundations 4. Only the lower end of the oven is shown in fig. 1.
A support constituting a cooler is arranged transversely to the axis of the furnace, below the end of the latter, -and these parts are all enclosed in an envelope having walls 5, 6 and 13, the necessary openings being provided. in the wall 6.
The cooler comprises a fixed inclined grid 7, carried by supports 8, 9 and 10. This grid consists of a sheet having several openings 33 each covered by a cap 34 formed by deep drawing or in another way. the sheet itself (fig. 5); the arrangement of the openings and the caps is such that air can pass through the grid without the clinkers coming from the oven and descending on the grid being able to pass through said or openings.
The clinhers leave the oven through an outlet ring 18 and fall on a box 19 of a fire resistant material and supported by the end wall 6 and by a brick wall 20. Box 19 is perforated; so that cooling air can flow through it. From the surface of this box, the elinkers are swept to be pushed onto the grid, by pallets 2,1 fixed to a support 22 which is integral with the oven.
Only a few of the pallets sweep the surface of the box 19, the others spread out smells like clinkers in a uniform layer over the entire width of the grid 7, at its upper end. The inclination of the grid is such that the layer of material formed, as has just been described, will not descend onto the frozen grid under the sole influence of weight.
The internal action by which the layer is forced to descend is effected by a movable gate 11 coming and going; this movable grid is formed of bars parallel to the line of greatest slope of the grid 7, interconnected by cross bars 11a and arranged in a plane parallel to the grid 7.
The grid 11 is supported by bars 23 forming a pendulum, which are fixed at their upper end to the wall 13 of the casing and which are of such dimensions that they can bend slightly to allow the grid 11 to go. and to come as a whole. This mobile grid 11 is set in a reciprocating motion by a crank disc 14 to which it is connected by a connecting rod 15 and levers 16 and 17, and this disc 14 is rotated by a motor 32 (fig. 3).
When this motor is running, the grid 11 moves back and forth, the bars moving longitudinally in their own plane, so that the layer of material moves as a whole, parallel to the bars and down on the grid 7.
To obtain this result, the distance between the two grids 7 and 11 must be at least equal to the dimension of the largest particles of clincker, otherwise the clinkers would get stuck. In addition, it has been found that in practice the bars which form the grid 11 should not be spaced from each other by more than 120 mm when treating cement elinkers, as otherwise the layer would not move. as a whole.
The stroke of the grid 11, that is to say the stroke of the crank of the disc 14, must be modified according to the thickness of the layer. Thus, if the production of the furnace increases, the layer will become thicker and a longer stroke will be required.
The cooling is effected by circulating air from a space 25 where it is at a pressure slightly above atmospheric pressure, through the grid 7 and the layer of material. This air is heated as it passes through the material and enters the furnace to be used as secondary combustion air.
In addition to adjusting the stroke of the grid 11, the speed of movement of this grid can also be varied according to the thickness of the layer of material opening on the grid 7 and this can conveniently be performed automatically. For this purpose, an indicator 26 with paddles is provided, the position of this indicator being determined by the thickness of the layer. The indicator is. attached to a box 27 which oscillates when the indicator moves and which contains mercury switches 28a, 28b, 28e and 28d (fig. 3).
These switches are actuated successively when the sorrel box and they each serve to short-circuit one of the resistors 29a, 29b, 29c and 29d of the motor circuit 3.2. A manually adjustable resistor is provided so that the motor can initially be set to the desired speed for furnace output and cooler capacity.
The motor current, which is supplied by conductors 31, passes through a greater or lesser number of resistors depending on the position of the switches 28a, 28b, 28e and 28d, that is - that is to say according to the position of the indicator 26. In the embodiment shown in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8, the axis of the support forming the cooler extends in the same general direction as the axis of the furnace instead of being arranged transversely to the latter. In other words, the material will descend on the inclined grid in the same general direction as that of movement in the oven.
The cooler operates on the same principle as that previously described, but it is of somewhat different construction.
The discharge end of the furnace and the cooler are enclosed in a casing having walls 3 ', 4' and 5 '. The wall 4 'has an opening for a fuel pipe A and for a door 39. The material discharged from the furnace passes firstly over a grid whose bars 40 are hollow and are cooled by water flowing through. them by means of conduits 41 and 42.
The large lumps of material will not pass between the bars of the grid 40, but will roll along the grid to the vicinity of the door 39 where they can be withdrawn by this door. The normal clinkers will fall between the bars of the grid 40 and through a pre-cooling or extinguishing well, formed between the wall 5 'of the casing, a wall 43 of refractory bricks and the side walls of the casing. .
Below the pa king 43 made of refractory bricks is an articulated plate 44, made of a heat-resistant material. A collector 45 cooperates with the lower edge of the hinged plate 44 to form a restricted opening through which the clinkers leave the pre-cooling or quenching well and through which they are supplied in the form of a uniform layer over the surface. inclined grille of the re-cooler itself. The articulated plate 44 is free to erase in the event that the clinkers tend to pile up as they pass through the restricted opening under the lower edge of the plate.
The cooling or extinguishing well is traversed by members 46 for pre-cooling or for extinguishing by air, supported by the walls 5 'and 43 of the well. These. or ganes preferably have, in cross section, the shape shown in FIG. 7, so that clinkers will accumulate on these organs and pockets will be formed in the material beneath them.
Air is supplied by a distributor 47 (Fig. 6), by means of conduits 48, to the lower part of the organs 46 and to the pockets. which formed in the matter under these organs. The air thus supplied escapes partially through holes which can be provided in the horizontal rib of the members 46 and partly around the lower edges of said members, by pre-cooling or by extinguishing the hot clinkers.
The opening between the articulated plate 44 and the collector 45, as well as the arrangement of the members 46, force the clinkers to form a pile in the pre-cooling or extinguishing well, as indicated by the dotted lines B in fig. . 7, and to be distributed evenly over the entire width of the inclined grid. If occasionally the furnace discharges more clinkers than can be removed from it through the passage between plate 44 and collector 45, by the member going and coming above the inclined grate,
the height of the heap of clinkers will rise and the excess clinker will be discharged through overflow openings 49, made in the transverse wall 43, of refractory bricks. Hinged plates 50 @ are provided on each side of the clinker pile to prevent the clinkers from separating into steps, as usually happens when clinkers are allowed to stack freely.
The cooler itself comprises a gas permeable grid 6 ', which may be similar to that employed in the embodiment previously described. This grid 6 'is mounted on supports 51 (FIG. 8).
The coming and going member functioning above the grid comprises several bars 18 'extending in the direction of the length of the grid and parallel to the latter. These bars are supported at their upper ends by oscillating arms 52 and at their lower ends by oscillating arms 53. (Fig. 6), which are supported in turn respectively by upper 54 and lower 55 shafts. Shafts 54 and 55 receive an oscillating movement by means of arms 56 and 57 respectively which are actuated in turn by rods. 58.
Each rod 58 is moved back and forth by an eccentric drive mechanism mounted on a shaft 59, the eccentric packing 60 of which can be angularly adjusted by a device indicated at 61 to vary the stroke of the shaft. rod.
Each rod 58 is slidably connected with the corresponding arms 56 and 57. Collars 62 and 63 are attached to the rod 58, so that when the rod 58 moves downwards, the upper collar 62 will act. on the arm 56 to pull the bars 18 'upwards. The sliding connection between the lower end of the rod 58 and the arm 57 prevents any pushing or compressive force from being applied to the lower ends of the bars 18 '.
Likewise, as rod 58 moves up, collar 63 moves arm 57 and lowers bars 18 ', while the sliding connection between the upper end of rod 58 and arm 56 prevents any pushing force from occurring. 'be applied to the upper ends of the bars 18'.
Thus the bars 18 'are constantly under tension, because when they are lowered they are pulled at their lower end and when they are raised they are pulled at their upper end. They are never solicited by a compressive force which would tend to make them bend or give way.
When the shaft 59 is rotated, for example by an electric motor such as that shown at 32 in FIG. 3, the eccentric positive device causes the rods 58 to come and go and, thanks to the connections described above, the bars 18 'are set in a reciprocating motion to cause the movement of the entire layer of material downward. the inclined grid in the manner previously described.
If the layer of material on the grate becomes thicker as a result of an increase in furnace supply, device 61 can be operated to adjust the angular position of eccentric liner 60; which adjusts the stroke of the rods 58 and therefore the length of the stroke of the bars 18 '. Air is supplied to the casing of the cooler by means of a fan 64.
The clear part which passes through the slanted grate above the hinged baffle plate 65 takes so much heat from the clinchers that it is suitable for use for combustion in the furnace. Thanks to the partition 43, this air does not come into contact with the hot material which comes out of the oven.
The part of the air which passes through the relatively cool lower part of the layer of clinkers, between the baffle 65 and a second hinged baffle 66, is discharged by a vertical discharge pipe 67. The baffle plate 65 is hinged to allow variations in the thickness of the layer on the inclined grid and to prevent any plugging in the event that clinker lumps accidentally pass between the bars of the grid 40.
The hinged baffle plate 66 is of such a length that it rests at its lower edge on the layer of clinkers, thus forming a seal for the air.
Clinkers discharged from the lower end of the inclined grate fall into a channel where they are unloaded onto a bucket conveyor 68 which takes them to a storage location. All the fine particles of clinkem which pass through the grid 6 'fall to the bottom of hoppers 69 and 70 (fig. 8) and are discharged by conveyor screws 71,
in the channel in which the bucket conveyor 68 operates.
It has been found that the angle of repose of cold cement clinker is greater than the angle of repose of hot clinker. When the grate is given the correct inclination for cooling hot clinkers, the movement of the clinker layer at the bottom of the grate may tend to be lower than at the top, because the clinker near of the lower part of the grid has been cooled, which gives it a greater angle of repose. To compensate for this state.
As a matter of fact, the lower parts of the bars 18 'and 11 may have protrusions shaped such as to increase the efficiency of the bars for moving the clinkers towards the lower part of the grate, but do not act unduly on the grid. layer of clinker when the bars go up. Protrusions of this kind are shown at 72 in FIG. 9.
The number of these protrusions and the distance over which they protrude from the bars, will depend, among other things, on the value of the compensating action that it is desired that they exert and on the approximate location on the displacement of the bars. clinkers. where the temperature of the clinkers has changed sufficiently to tend to slow their movement.
