Self-lubricating bearing. The present invention relates to a self-lubricating bearing, such as it can for example be used in the rolling stock of railways.
According to the invention, the bearing comprises an oil reservoir, the upper part of which forming an air chamber is separated from the atmosphere so that a vacuum can be maintained therein, this reservoir communicating, on the other hand, at its lower part, with an oil chamber from which the oil is supplied to the bearing surfaces of the bearing by means of supply with capillary effect. Preferably, the oil reservoir is mostly disposed above the level of the lowest point of the opening through which oil is supplied to the bearing surfaces of the bearing, and an expansion chamber may be provided in connection with the oil chamber to increase the effective area thereof in order to eliminate or reduce variations in the level of the feed oil.
Figs. 1, 2, 3 of the accompanying drawing represent, by way of example and in cross section, three embodiments of the object of the invention.
The bearing shown in FIG. 1 comprises a support pad 1 surrounding a journal 2 of a rotating shaft or axle. The cous sinet 1 is mounted in a collar 3 made of cast iron with the bearing box and having an opening 4 communicating with a lubrication chamber 5 occupying one side of the bearing box. The other side of the latter forms an oil reservoir 6 communicating, by a duct 7 passing under the collar 3, with an oil supply opening 8 provided in the lower part of the lubrication chamber 5, this lower part constituting an oil chamber 9.
An oil chamber; expansion, 10, is arranged next to the oil chamber 9 with which it communicates by a slot 11 to maintain the same oil level there as in the chamber 9. The entire lubrication chamber 5 as well as the oil chamber 9 are packed with a capillary-acting oil supply material 12, such as tow, which can be removed and replaced after unscrewing the screws 13 and removing the cover 14 covering the opening of the gasket. upper intro duction of the lubrication chamber 5.
The oil is carried through the capillary channels of the material 12 to the lubrication opening 4 and from there to the journal 2. The quantity of oil thus supplied to the journal 2 depends on the total cross-sectional area. of the capillary feed material at the level of the oil supply in the oil chamber 5, of the rise of the oil which is due to said material, that is to say of the level difference between the opening 4 and the supply of oil in the oil chamber 9, and the viscosity and other qualities of the oil used, depending on the lubricating conditions of the journal.
The bearing box is provided, in one of these walls, with an oil filling duct 16. This duct is connected at the top to an enlarged mouth 17, arranged above the oil tank 6, and this duct descends. in this until level 15 at which it is desired to keep the oil in the oil chamber 9.
The meaning of these arrangements will be understood by considering the conditions which arise in the event that the mouth 17 of the oil filling duct 16 is hermetically sealed. Under these conditions, the oil level in the oil chamber 9 would be determined by the higher level in the communication duct 7, i.e. it would correspond to level 19 of the lower portion of the collar. 3, whereas oil rising in the oil chamber 9 above this level would seal the duct 7 and prevent the passage of air into the upper part of the hermetically closed oil tank 6.
The mouth 17 called the wise oil filling duct 16 is not hermetically closed, but establishes free communication between the level 15 in the oil tank 6 and the external atmosphere. The static pressure at level 15 in the oil tank is thus identical to the pressure at the lower end 20 of the duct 16 and the oil in the two communicating spaces will consequently rise to the same level.
Lowering the oil level in the oil tank will cause the oil level to drop slightly at the lower end 20 of duct 16 until enough air bubbles have passed under the end. 20 in the upper portion of the oil tank to raise the oil level there to level 15, at which time the equilibrium conditions are again re-established.
The pressure in the space above the oil level 21 in the oil tank 6 will thus automatically adjust so that the oil column between the oil levels 15 and 21 plus the pressure in the oil tank 6. space above the oil level 21 is equal to atmospheric pressure. By judiciously choosing the height of the lower opening of the oil filling duct 16, it is possible to control the height of the oil level in the oil chamber 9 depending on the needs of the bearing.
The oil tank 6 is further provided with a ventilation device to ensure uniform pressure conditions in the oil tank and to prevent any disturbance in its hermetic closure during normal operation of the bearing. The ventilation device comprises a support cap 23 screwed tightly into a boss 23a, of the upper wall 24 of the oil tank and carrying a U-shaped ventilation tube 22, the longer branch 25 of which is U-shaped. extends through the plug 23 and ends above the oil tank, but at a level significantly lower than the mouth 17 of the filler pipe 16, slum that its shorter branch 26 rises to near moth of wall 24,
the bent part of this tube being immersed in the oil bath to below level 15 which is hand held in the oil chamber 9. A cap 28 and a hinged cover 29 prevent dirt from entering the openings openings of the oil filler pipe 16 and of the long branch 25 of the ventilation tube.
The operation of the aeration tube will be understood by considering the conditions which arise during ordinary filling of the oil tank 6, the first filling being able to be done after unscrewing the plug 23 by introducing oil through the bos sage 23a. Since the opening 8 which leads from the communication duct 7 to the oil chamber 9 is to some extent blocked by the capillary-acting oil feed material, the filling operation can be carried out without giving rise to excessive rise of the oil in the oil chamber 9. After filling the reservoir, the plug 23 is put back in place, ensuring that the latter is sealed.
The pressure conditions in the oil reservoir 6 and the operation of the bearing depend entirely on the care with which the servant has closed the boss 23a.
It has been found very desirable to make the bearing free from all random conditions, in particular due to the fact that its correct operation depends on the tight closing of the oil reservoir. The aeration tube 22 serves to make the bearing independent of the attention of the attendant and to automatically maintain uniform pressure conditions throughout operation. It will be assumed that the ventilation tube 22 has its branches 25, 26 partially filled with oil and that the oil in the oil reservoir 6 has been consumed up to level 15. Under these conditions, air will pass freely. under the end 20 of the filler pipe 16 in the upper part of the oil tank 6. By refilling the tank 6 again, oil is introduced into the mouth 17 of the pipe 16 which it fills in any his height.
As a result of the pressure of the oil column in the line 16, the oil will flow into the oil tank 6, compressing the air in the upper part of the latter and causing the oil contained in it to move. the short branch 26 of the ventilation tube so as to push it back through the long branch 25, until the oil has filled the entire space of the oil tank 6, the air being expelled through the tube of aeration 22 and followed by a portion of the fresh oil supplied, until the latter overflows at the open end of the long branch 25 of the aeration tube.
The movement of oil through the filling line 16 into the oil tank 6 takes place as a result of the pressure of the oil column in the line 16 and, of course, this pressure acts during the filling operation as well. on the oil in the oil chamber 9, tending to cause the oil level in it to rise, but it is unable to produce this rise due to the poor ability to conduct oil from the material to capillary effect supply blocking the opening 8 which leads there.
After the filling operation has been carried out and the oil occupies the entire space of the oil tank 6, the oil columns in the duct 16 and in the long branch 25 of the aeration tube exert pressure. on the oil in the oil chamber 9 and, in a relatively short period of time, the small quantity of oil forming these two columns will cause the level of the oil in the oil chamber 9 to rise slightly, up to that all levels are in a condition of equilibrium. The total rise of the oil level in the oil chamber 9 will however be relatively low due to the large surface area of the oil level in the expansion chamber 10. The oil consumption in the bearing will cause the level normal oil 15 will soon be reached.
The vacuum produced in the reservoir 6 drives enough oil from the short branch 26 of the ventilation tube 22 to bring the oil level in the long branch 25 to approximately level 15, when the reservoir 6 is full. , and after that the level difference in the two branches of the ventilation tube will adjust itself depending on the air pressure in the tank 6.
For filling purposes and for other reasons yet, it is advisable to mount an oil container 31 above the tank see 6, this container being connected by a flexible pipe 32, with a tight seal, to the filling duct 16 In this way, the pressure of the filling oil column can be increased to determine an acceleration of the filling operation, disregarding the possibility of filling the tank when the oil level in it. ci is significantly higher than the normal level 15. In the embodiment of FIG. 2, the filling duct and the aeration tube are combined in a single removable device 33 which comprises a threaded plug 34 screwed into a hole 35 in the upper wall of the oil tank 6 and forming a sealed closure.
The plug 34 is provided, at the bottom, with a filling tube 36 descending to the oil level 15 and, at the top, with a pipe 37 to receive the oil. With this part is combined a U-shaped ventilation tube, the long branch 38 of which passes inside the filling tube 36 and communicates at 39 with the outside, while its short branch 41 rises almost to the wall on the surface. 24 of the oil tank 6. A cha skin 42 covers the open ends of the filling tube and the aeration tube to prevent the entry of dirt and is arranged to maintain approximately the same pressure inside as. the ambient atmosphere.
The operation of this construction is similar to that of the first example. The length of the filling tube or duct 36 can be extended to a point below the lower portion 19 of the collar 3, in which case the device 34 serves only to allow the filling of oil into the bearing without disturbing. its hermetic closure. In this case, the operating oil level in the oil chamber 9 would be determined by the lower portion of the collar 3. In the example of fig. 3, a ventilation tube 45 is mounted on a plug 46 which is hermetically fixed in an opening 47 of the side wall 18 of the oil tank 6 by means of screws 49.
The aeration tube 45 comprises, on the one hand, an elbow 51 which is arranged below the atmospheric pressure level 15 in the oil tank 6 corresponding to the height of the lower end of the tube or filling duct 36 and, on the other hand, two branches 52, 53 extending, one in the upper part of the oil tank and, the other, to the outside air. The branch 53 which leads to the external atmosphere extends, at least partially, above the atmospheric pressure level 15 in the reservoir 6 and is for view of a shut-off valve 54.
It is not necessary to raise the branch 53 of the ventilation tube which leads to the outside much higher than the atmospheric pressure level 15 in the oil tank, since the oil level in this branch is Find aforesaid art level 15 shortly after the fill operation is complete. With the oil consumption in the bearing and the gradual drop in the oil in tank 6, the vacuum in the space above the oil in tank 6 decreases and the oil that is retained in the tank ventilation tube 45 is slowly evacuated by the tube branch 53 leading to the outside atmosphere. This will not affect the airtight seal of the space in the oil tank.
It is, however, preferable to avoid the slow draining of the oil from the open end of the branch 53 and it is also for this purpose that the latter is provided with the tap 54 which is open during the operation. filling and is closed during normal bearing operation. The valve 54 is not called upon to maintain the vacuum in the oil tank, the latter being maintained as a result of the relative heights of the branches of the ventilation tube, that is to say that the vacuum in the upper part of the oil tank 6 tends to maintain a united column of oil in the branch 45 of the ventilation tube.
The valve 54 is primarily employed to prevent oil leaks or flows from the vent tube which would occur as the oil supply is consumed.
It has been found that the additional resistance to the entry of oil into the reservoir which is caused by the presence of the ventilation duct makes it desirable to have a particular construction of the filling means so as to make it possible to accelerate the operation of the filling. filling to perform it in a short period of time. To this end, the filling means comprise, in combination with the filling duct 36, a device for injecting oil into the filling duct 36 under increased pressure. This device consists of a simple suction and pressure pump 55, the suction pipe of which is immersed in an oil container 56 and the delivery side of which is connected by the flexible pipe 57 to the filling pipe 36, by means of a waterproof plug 58.
In this way, the pressure of the filling oil column is increased and thereby an acceleration of the filling operation is obtained, apart from the possibility of filling the reservoir to any level with the oil contained therein. .
