I>t,</I> 2s, i@, x.
Cutting torch designed to operate in water. The invention relates to a cutting torch intended to operate in water.
This torch is particularly intended for working in water at any accessible depth, to cut sheets or any metal parts, of various thicknesses and of variable shapes. It applies in particular with advantages to underwater searches of submerged ships and to similar work.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section through the axis of the torch; Fig. 2 is an end view of the anterior end to which meet the tubes for supplying the fluids necessary for operation.
The torch itself is made up of elements, a part of which is placed inside a hollow part ca constituting the head of the torch and which is situated perpendicular to one of the ends of a long cylindrical tube 6 constituting the handle of the device. The opposite end of this handle comprises a disc 1 hollowed out internally by fluid distribution conduits, which conduits communicate with three taps <I> p, q, </I> r to which the pipes for supplying these fluids are connected. , pipes which are not shown in the drawing.
The tubular head a is formed by the widening and stamping of one of the ends of the tube 6 constituting the handle. This head a is open at one end and closed at the other end by a bottom a 'which is drilled in its center with a hole intended to give passage to the threaded end b4 of a nozzle <I> b < / I> which is arranged in the axis of the; head <I> a. </I> This nozzle is kept fixed to the head a, at the desired height, by tightening two nuts 7 locking in the opposite direction against the bottom a '.
The threaded end b4 of said nozzle b is hollowed out internally to form a cylindrical chamber b ', the upper part of which is threaded to receive the part. threaded h "of a rod h 'which constitutes a needle valve, its conical lower end h. coming to rest on a seat w formed at the lower part of this chamber b'. This chamber communicates by a channel e ', with the end of a pipe e. bringing in pure oxygen. On the other hand a tube n originates in said chamber b' and runs along the outside of the nozzle b to the frustoconical end i of this nozzle.
The lower part of the nozzle b is also hollowed out to form two cylindrical chambers <I> b "</I> and <I> b" '</I> communicating through an orifice of smaller diameter which is threaded along its length and is used to assemble titi nozzle This nozzle reigns over the entire length of the chamber b "and its end pierced with a calibrated orifice opens out at the entrance of a channel drilled axially in a spout i which is screwed at the end of the end lower nozzle b.
A pipe d opens into chamber b "', and a pipe f opens into the upper part of chamber b".
The lower part of the head a is laterally drilled with a hole which is threaded to receive a part 9 which is axially bored in order to serve as a slide for a pusher k which comprises an axial rod k \ at the embedded end of which is connected an electrically conductive wire 1. The opposite end of this rod k 'passes through a plug y and protrudes inside the head a. The pusher k is constantly pushed back by a spring z which bears against the plug y.
Opposite the projecting end of the conductive rod k 'opens out the end c' of a pipe c. At this end, which is cut obliquely, is connected a second current conducting wire which is not shown in the drawing.
The open end of the head a is pro longed by a frustoconical nozzle, j, the assembly of which is not shown, is arranged to allow this nozzle to rise and fall to be immobilized at a desired height, depending on whether the work of the torch requires that the lower end of this nozzle is at the level of the end of the nozzle i of the nozzle b or else above or below this level. The aforementioned pipes <I> e, d, f, c </I> are parallel to each other and to the handle 6 inside which they are housed, these pipes originate in the disc 1 which is fixed to the anterior end of the handle 6 by a tail 1 '.
This disc 1 is hollowed out by five radiating channels 2, 2a, 2v, 2, 2d which are each glued at a point along their length to form the seat of a needle valve 3 which is screwed into the disc 1 by a threaded part 4 terminated by a knurled head to be operated by hand. The lower end of each channel forms a chamber 5 in which a pipe originates. In the drawing the five needle valves bear the reference letters s, <I> t, </I> 2s, i @, x.
To channels 2> 1, 2 '> correspond the pipes <I> e, d, </I> while the pipes <I> f, </I> c correspond to channels 2, 211. To channel 2 corresponds a pipe nz which runs along the handle 6 and will also open into the inside of the head a fig. 1.
Channel 2 is connected via a valve q, with a compressed air supply line. The channels 2d, 21, communicate together by a transverse channel 10 to which is connected the valve to which is connected a pipe supplying pure oxygen. The channels 2, 211 communicate in the same way by a channel 11 in which acetylene gas arrives cry amount regulated by the valve p.
The valves p, q, r are used for a first adjustment of the flow of the respective fluids and the needle valves u, <I> v, </I> x, <I> s, t, </I> are intended for a second adjustment of the flow in the pipes <I> in, e, d, </I> f ', c. The flow of pure oxygen in the chamber b ', and finally aù jet rz, is regulated a third time and definitively by the needle valve h, lt'.
The operation of the torch is as follows: First of all, the compressed air valve q and the needle 3 are open when the device is immersed while the valves p, r remain closed, it follows that during the path of the torch in the water and throughout the working period in the liquid, the compressed air continuously arrives inside the head a and leaves it through the nozzle j in order to avoid any entry water inside the head a and keep Skin away from any contact with the metal to be cut, during the cutting work, as is known.
Secondly, the diver who manipulates the torch opens the valves p, <I> r, </I> and then he acts on the needle valves <I> a, t, v, </I> x to perform a first adjustment of the fluid flow in the pipes P, <I> d, f, </I> c. Finally, he pushes in the pusher lc due to its rod k 'coming into contact with the end c' of the tube c and determines the closing of the electrical circuit. This pusher is then abruptly abandoned so that a rupture spark occurs which ignites the acetylene coming out of the pipe c.
The resulting flame lengthens under the action of the compressed air passing through the head a, and this elongated flame in turn ignites the oxygen-acetylene mixture exiting through the beak.
Depending on the thickness and the nature of the metal to be cut, the respective intensities of the central flame and of the lateral cutting jet are regulated by the worker by operating the fluid inlet valves.
On the other hand, the nozzle j is adjusted in height according to the work to be carried out.
The torch is moved by the worker in its plane and parallel to the longitudinal axis, in the direction of the arrow fig. 1, so that the metal is attacked first by the combustion flame of the mixture exiting at i, and then by the jet of pure oxygen exiting from pipe n.
The torch described can operate in free air, but in this case the sending into the head a of a compressed fluid is eliminated.
The torch described has the following advan tages 1 The ignition of the gas mixture leaving the nozzle i is absolutely certain, it can be carried out at will and any number of times, when the torch is immersed in water; by the simple operation of pusher k. 2 The gases entering the compartments <I> b ", b" '</I> mix very close to their exit and produce a very oxidizing flame which activates the melting of the metal and ensures this over a great thickness in little of time.
3 The needle valve h ensures a definitive and precise adjustment of the flow of pure oxygen supplying the cutting jet n located eccentrically to the nozzle i.
4 The nozzle j can be adjusted in height in relation to the nozzle <I> i </I> of the nozzle <I> b; </I> which allows the variation of the relative positions of the nozzle <I> b </I> and the nozzle j according to the work to be performed.
b The entire torch is compact and light; all its regulating elements are within immediate reach of the hands of the worker.
