<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The present invention relates to an arc welding apparatus, and more particularly to a water-cooled electrode nozzle for arc welding in a gas atmosphere.
In gas-filled arc welding, an annular current of a gas is passed to the arc coaxially with the welding electrode through a welding nozzle, in order to prevent contamination of the weld. Because the nozzle is kept in close proximity to the weld, it is cooled
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
normally with water to prevent the heat of the arc from damaging it as well as to reduce spatter adhesion of the weld.
In manual welding, the worker holds a welding gun with the welding nozzle, and he handles the gun so as to place the electrode along the weld line. The gun must therefore be light, that it can be easily handled and that it preferably has the shape of a pencil, so as to ensure maximum visibility of the weld for the worker.
The welding head or gun, according to the present invention, generally comprises an annular water jacket supported coaxially with a tube in contact with the electrode, from a housing and a support. insulators. A replaceable nozzle spout is attached in heat exchange relationship to the front end plug of the water jacket for cooling the nozzle spout. An insulating tubular sleeve is disposed between the water jacket and the contact tube to prevent spark discharges between the jacket and the tube which would pierce the water jacket. The sleeve is retained in the gun, preferably by locking it between the spout of the nozzle and an interior surface of the gun.
The necessary electrical connections and necessary fittings for water and gas are all arranged in the housing so as to be electrically isolated from the worker.
A robust, inexpensive welding gun has been devised in the present invention, the lightness of which facilitates handling and which has a cooling and gas nozzle in the shape of a pencil to ensure good visibility of the welding gun. 1 'arc.
In the attached drawing, which illustrates the best embodiment currently envisaged for implementing the invention:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the welding gun.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view on a larger scale and in partial section.
Figure 3 is a vertical section taken through 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4, is an enlarged fragmentary section taken at 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section made through 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a section taken through 6-6 of Figure 4.
By examining the drawing, and in particular Figures 1 and 2, it will be seen that the gun shown includes an insulating housing. 1, fitted with a nozzle assembly 2 for the shielding gas, which extends from the front end of the casing, and a flexible inlet tube 3 fixed to the rear end of the casing . The tube 3 is secured in alignment with the nozzle to provide a guide passage for an electrode 4 which is supplied from a remote source (not shown) through the gun, to an arc (not shown). illustrated).
A water supply pipe 5, a water outlet and current supply pipe 6, a gas pipe 7 and a control cable 8 extend into the housing 1 in the vicinity of the flexible tube. 3 and are connected to the nozzle 2 so as to completely enclose in the housing 1 the various connections of the constituent elements entering the housing.
The housing 1 is a molded part of a non-conductive material and comprises a hollow rectangular body 9 and a hollow handle 10 facing downwards, similar to the butt of a shooting pistol. As can be seen in Figures 1 to 3, the housing 1 is divided vertically into two similar halves
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
corresponding, which are held together by several small transverse screws 11 provided with nuts 12 and arranged on the outer edge of the housing. The front wall 13 of the housing 1 is relatively high, and it has a cylindrical opening which is partially closed by a flange 14 and in which an enlarged part of the nozzle assembly 2 is arranged, so that the 'set 2 is supported on the housing
1.
Looking particularly at Figures 2 and 4, it is seen that the nozzle assembly 2 comprises a metal end block or support block 15, which is disposed in the opening of the front wall 13 and which is drilled at its central portion to receive a contact tube 16 of copper or other suitable conductive material. A locking screw 17, screwed into an appropriate threaded lateral bore of the block 15, bears against the tube 16 in order to immobilize it perfectly. A bore 18, which is made in the upper wall of the housing 1 and which is aligned with the locking screw, allows the tube to be replaced. contact 16 without having to separate the two halves of the housing 1.
A guide 19, for the welding wire and made of a rigid metal, is fixed in a recess in the rear part of the support block 15, this guide being aligned in the longitudinal direction with the contact tube. 16 and extending rearwardly to a drilled cylindrical boss 20, formed in the housing and in which a connector 21 supports the end of the inlet tube 3 of the electrode.
The guide 19 of the welding wire is permanently fixed in the boss 20 by means of an annular flange 22 made on the end of the guide 19 and housed in a corresponding annular recess made in the front end of the boss, thanks to whereby the guide 19 thus prevents the nozzle assembly 2 from moving longitudinally in the housing 1. The end having the guide 19 of the solder wire, which is fixed to the block 15. is recessed at
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
view to receive the inner end of the contact tube 16 and constitutes a positioning stopper serving to put the tube 16 in position in the block 15.
An annular terminal shutter 23, having the same diameter as the block 15, is disposed in the opening of the front wall 13 and abuts against the flange 14 '. The shutter 23 is fixed to the support block 15, coaxially with the tube. contact 16 and at some distance from it, by means of four screws 24 spaced at equal distances around a circumference, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. The screws 24 pass through the block 15 and are threaded into suitably threaded openings machined in end plug 23.
A disc-shaped insulating piece 25 made of "nylon" or other suitable material is placed between the end plug 23 and the block 15, and a cup-shaped insulating piece 26, which has a tubular extension'27,, separates the locking screw 24 from the support block, so as to electrically isolate the end stopper 23 from the support block 15.
By examining particularly Figures 2 and 4, it can be seen that the front end of the shutter 23 is recessed, so as to constitute an internal annular surace 28 aligned with the opening delimited by the flange 14 formed in the box. tier 1. A tube 29 ′ fixed by one end to the annular surface 28, and it extends outwardly through the opening made in the casing 1.
A second tube 30, which is fixed in a recess made in the extreme inner axial surface of the annular shutter 23, extends outwardly, coaxially with the tube 29 through the opening, so as to form an annular chamber 31 for water cooling between tube 29 and tube 30, the front ends of which are joined by an annular shutter 32.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Water is introduced into chamber 31 through an inlet passage 33 clearly shown in Figure 4, and it leaves the chamber through an outlet passage 34, clearly shown in Figure 2. The passages 33 and 34 are formed by aligned longitudinal bores, which are circumferentially spaced from each other by 90 in the terminal block 15, the end plug 23 and the insulating "nylon" separation disc 25. Suitably drilled seals 35 and 36 are disposed on either side of the separation disc 25 to prevent liquid from leaking out when screws 24 are unscrewed.
Tubes 37 and 38, substantially S-shaped, are secured in the rear ends of respective passages 33 and 34 / of block 15 and extend rearward and downward. Threaded fittings 39 and 40 releasably connect the water supply pipe 5 and the water outlet pipe 6 to the respective tubes 37 and 38 extending in a. chamber 41 with recesses which is formed in the housing 1, immediately below and in front of the boss 20. The conduits 5 and 6 enter the chamber 41 through an opening 42 provided at the rear of the housing 1.
The water introduced through the water inlet pipe 5 arrives through the tube 37 and the passage 33 in the water chamber 31, and then leaves through the outlet passage 34, the tube 38 and the conduit 6.
By circulating in the chamber 31, the water cools a massive copper spout 43 of the nozzle, which is screwed into the front end shutter 32 and which is, therefore, in a heat exchange relation with this last. The end plug 32 is preferably made of copper, or another metal having high heat conduction, in order to ensure efficient heat transfer from the nozzle 43. The surface of the nozzle the terminal shutter 32 which is in the tubs. 'and 30 has two annular recesses'44 forming grains and serving to ensure maximum surface contact with the water circulating in the chamber.
31 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
to allow a suitable connection 45, by thread, of the nozzle 43 and the obturator 32, with a view to mechanical strength. '
The tubes 29 and '30 extend towards the front a little less than the contact tube 16, so that the nozzle tip 43 is disposed slightly in front of the contact tube. A suitable shielding gas 46 is supplied through nozzle 43 so as to surround tip 47 of electrode 4 and thereby the welding arc (not shown).
Protective gas 46 flows continuously through a gas passage 48 which is bounded around contact tube 16 by inner tube 30 of cooling chamber 31 which is concentrically spaced from tube 16: As shown in Figure 4 , the gas 46 is introduced into the passage 48 from a channel 49 formed in the support block 15. This channel extends rearwardly and radially outward from the gas passage 48. to a longitudinal recess formed in the rear surface of the block 15 and in which is fixed one end of a tube 50 having substantially the shape of an S.
The tube 50 extends backwards and downwards, and it is / ermine in a threaded connection 51 .. housed in the chamber 41 of the housing 1 and to which the gas supply duct 7 is releasably attached. . The gas line 7 is connected to a source (not shown) of a suitable protective gas, such as carbon dioxide or an inert gas, for the purpose of continuously supplying protective gas 46 to a welding arc. .
One can see in figure 2 that the current used to maintain the arc is sent to the electrode 4 by a power cable 52 fixed in the water outlet pipe 6. This cable is fixed in the pipe. 6 by a kaaguu elastic metal ring 53 which fits tightly into the duct. One has provided an extension 54, extending rearwardly from the elastic ring 53, which is crimped around the end of the cable 52 to provide electrical connection between the ring 53 and the cable.

A metal tube 55 is welded, or otherwise fixed, in the front / part of the elastic ring 53, and it forms a part, of the fitting 40 for the water outlet pipe 6.
As a result, the electric current coming from the cable 52 passes through the ring 53 and arrives at the fitting 40, from where it is brought through the outlet tube 38 to the terminal or support block 15. From the block 15, the current flows. via the contact tube 16 which is attached thereto, and reaches the electrode 4 for the purpose of maintaining an arc (not shown).
So that the current only reaches the electrode
4 which extends at all times in the contact tube 16, there is provided a fiber fur 56 which extends over the entire length of the guide 19 of the welding wire. This fur bears against the contact tube 16 which partially closes at 57 the bore of the thread guide 19. The fur 56 extends to the rear of the posterior end of the thread guide 19 and it is flared outwards. as shown at 58. The flared end of the fur is locked in place between corresponding chamfered surfaces 59 provided on the connector 21 of the flexible tube 3 and the seat or recess in which the connector 21 is arranged.
The part 58 of the guide 19 ensures the / electrical insulation of the inlet connector 21 vis-à-vis the wire guide 19 and, therefore, vis-à-vis the terminal block 15 and, thanks to this flared part , the input current can only reach the electrode 4 which is in the immediate vicinity of the tube 16.
During welding, the inner tube 30 of the water jacket is normally neutral. However, if the nozzle 2 encounters an earthed element during welding, a potential difference occurs between, on the one hand, the inner tube 30 and, on the other hand, the contact tube. 16 and electrode 4. This potential difference tends to create an arc starting from the

contact 16 and electrode 4 and terminating at inner tube 30. If solder splashes enter the gas passage and adhere to either tube 30 or tube 16, the distance between these tubes is shortened and an arc may occur. 'priming more easily.
A discharge or disruptive spark between these elements would pierce tube 30. To prevent this disruptive spark, an insulating sleeve 60 has been provided which tightly surrounds and is secured to the periphery of tube 30. This sleeve is immobilized between the nozzle nozzle 43 and the terminal block 15 when the nozzle is screwed into the terminal shutter '32. The insulating sleeve 60 thus protects the entire length of the inner tube 30 and prevents the latter from being punctured. The sleeve is also preferably such that splashes do not easily adhere to it, which prevents the accumulation of splashes which would interfere with the flow of gas and cause turbulence of the latter.
The end connector 21, which is arranged in the bump of the rear wall, is crossed in its central part by a cylindrical bore comprising an annular recess 61 formed in its outer surface. This recess is aligned with a transverse opening, which is formed in the boss 20 and into which is screwed a bolt or screw 62 which freely blocks the connector 21 in the bossage. To replace the electrode 4, with another whose diameter does not allow it to pass through the flexible tube 3, the connector 21 is released and a suitable guide tube 3 is put in place for the electrode. The contact tube 16 is also changed correspondingly.
To facilitate the maintenance of the welding apparatus at a constant distance between the electrode and the workpiece (not shown) 'and, therefore, the maintenance of a constant arc length, it was fixed in the front wall 13 of the housing 1,

a guide rod 63 which extends forward parallel to the nozzle assembly 2. As shown in / figure 2, the rod
63 slides in a suitable bore in the front wall
13, and it is immobilized in an adjustable manner by a small transverse screw 64, which passes through a lateral bore formed in the wall and bears against the rod 63 in order to immobilize it.
A metal insert 65, fixed for example by press fitting in the lateral bore, has an opening / aligned with the bore receiving the rod, and a tapped hole which is perpendicular to the bore receiving the rod and which is aligned with the screw bore in the front wall for receiving screw 64. A knurled knob 66, shown in Figure 1, allows screw 64 to be turned by hand to adjust the position. rod 63.
The worker's hand is protected from the intense heat of the arc by an L-shaped metal screen 67, which is fixed to the lower part of the butt 10, for example by an adjustment screw 68 , and which slides on the rod 63 'in the immediate vicinity of the front end of the housing.
A control trigger 69, articulated in a recess in the butt 10 of the gun, can be actuated by the hand by the worker, and it is connected to the control cable 8 which extends outwardly through back of housing 1.
The control cable 8 is connected to actuating devices (not shown) in order to simultaneously trigger the sending of gas, the sending of water and closing of the electrical circuit of the unit. electrode 4.
It can be seen that the present invention has designed a welding gun which is light and easy to handle, which is intended for arc welding in a gas atmosphere and which comprises a simple water cooling system.
