Pressurized fluid brake. The present invention relates to a pressurized fluid brake.
In trams, for example, the pressurized fluid brakes have at each end of the car a brake operating valve intended to be controlled by the mechanic of the car, but it is customary not to admit every both the operation of the brake from a single end of the car by means of a single removable handle -de which will be applied to the operating valve to be actuated.
In some circumstances it may be desirable to be able to perform an emergency brake application independently of the mechanic, but in the case where there is only one operating handle applied to the end brake valve. of the car where the mechanic is standing, it is impossible to apply the brake from a place other than the location of the mechanic, that is to say, for example, from the rear end of the car, unless the brake does not include, in this place, an auxiliary control valve which can be used by the driver of the car.
It has been proposed, in certain types of brakes, to provide a. control member in the connection pipe between the first valve of maneuver dï7. mechanic and the brake cylinder, this control member comprising a movable piston arranged to automatically establish communication between the operating valve and the brake cylinder when said valve allows fluid for celui-ei. In this kind of installation,
the provision of an auxiliary valve within reach of the driver of the car to enable him to apply the brake from the rear, for example, of the car, independently of the mechanic, has the drawback - that it may be difficult subsequently to effect release of the brake from the end where the mechanic is standing due to the fact that the aforementioned movable piston will automatically move to a position establishing communication between said auxiliary valve and the brake cylinder,
at the same time as he intercepts the communication between the maneuvering valve of the mechanic at the head of the car and the brake cylinder, the mechanic then not having enough pressure at his disposal to bring the control piston back to its original position, which would allow it to release the brake.
The brake forming the subject of the invention is of the type with a movable control member arranged to automatically establish communication between the mechanic's brake valve and the brake cylinder when said valve allows fluid to pass for this. last to deny, but next.
the invention comprises an auxiliary control valve at the driver's reach to allow the latter to cause emergency application of the brake independently of the mechanic, auxiliary valve constructed so as not to allow the brake to be released only by the mechanic. from the opposite end of the car by appropriate maneuvering of the operating valve at this end and after the auxiliary valve has been returned to its rest position.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention.
The brake equipment shown in this drawing has two brake control valves 1, one at each end of the car, operated by the mechanic at the head of the car, in combination with a single control handle:
work 2 arranged to be adapted to one or other of these brake control valves, a brake cylinder 3, a main reservoir 4, a reversing or control member 5 interposed in the brake pipe 6 s' extending straight through from one end of the car to the other, and arranged to establish, through line 6, a communication between one or the other brake actuator valve and the brake cylinder, and an auxiliary maneuvering valve 7 at each end of the car, mounted within reach of the driver located each time at the rear of the car.
The reversing member 5 comprises a box with a median cylindrical chamber 8 enclosing a movable piston 9 and with two end chambers 10, 11 each containing a drawer 1.2 connected by a rod 13 to the udder 9 and controlling an escape orifice ment 14.
The sections of the brake pipe 6, coming from the brake maneuvering cocks 1 open, one into the chamber 10 and the other into the chamber 11. A pipe 15 connects the middle chamber 8 of said pouring member to the brake cylinder 3, so that, when the piston 9 rests on one or the other of the two seats provided at the ends of the chamber 8, it establishes through the pipe 15 communication between one of the maneuvering valves 1 and the brake cylinder 3, at the same time as it intercepts any communication of the other maneuvering valve 1 with the brake cylinder 3.
Each auxiliary maneuvering valve 7 comprises a plug with a key 16 that can be turned using a handle 17 to establish communication between the crrespoadant section of the brake line 6 and an auxiliary line 18 connected by a branch to main tank 4.
In the interconnection line thus established between the brake line 6 and the auxiliary line 18 is a pressure limiting valve 19 subjected to the pressure of a spring 20, so that the maximum pressure of the fluid which can be admitted to the brake cylinder by the operation of the auxiliary valve 7 is appreciably lower than the pressure in the main reservoir 4, in spite of the pressure exerted by the spring 20.
Suppose that the maneuvering valve 1 to the right of the drawing is the one which is operated by the mechanic at the head of the car. If the brake is to be applied from the left end or in the operative state, the driver or any person other than the mechanic who operates the valve 1 at the head of the.
car, turn the key -I valve 16 from this left end to its open position, as shown on the left in the drawing, and pressurized fluid is immediately admitted from the main tank 4 through line 1.8 and through the limiting valve pressure 19 corresponding to the brake line 6 and will cause the piston 9 to move to the right to establish communication between the brake line 6 and the brake cylinder 3, so that pressurized fluid will not be in this to cause, the tightening (read brake. The tightening performed, the valve key 7 6 is, under normal conditions, returned to the closed position.
Of course, in an emergency, the valve key 16 can be kept in the open position to prevent the mechanic from releasing the brake against the will of the driver.
As said above, the maximum pressure of the fluid which can be admitted to the brake cylinder by the respective auxiliary control valve 7 is lower than the pressure of the fluid in the main reservoir 4 due to the reducing action. valve 19 and, therefore, if the mechanic at the head of the car should want to release the brake, he can do so by first moving the handle chi operating valve to the clamping position, so as to admits to be. fluid to full pressure from the main reservoir to the brake line.
The main reservoir pressure being greater than the pressure in the brake cylinder acting on the opposite side of the piston 9, the latter will be moved to the left so as to re-establish communication through the brake pipe between the brake valve. maneuver 1 to the head of the car (to the right of the drawing) and the brake cylinder. It is understood that when admitting fluid from line 6 into device 5, there will be some loss of fluid through the corresponding exhaust port 14, but ports 14 are so small that this loss will occur. does not come into play.
When the piston 9 moves to the left, the left drawer 12 uncovers in the. chamber 10 the corresponding exhaust port 14, so that the fluid can escape from the left-hand section of the brake line 6 and therefore the piston 9 will remain on the left while the maneuver 1 is brought into the released position in order to release the fluid from the brake cylinder.
Of course, the same operations occur regardless of which end of the car is at the head of the latter to receive the command from the mechanic.
