Process for the preparation of a new related dye. It has been found that the condensation product of 1 mole of chloranil and 2 moles of p-aminosalicylic acid can be converted by treatment with concentrated sulfuric acid into a new dye that stains the chrome-stained fibers in blue-tinged violet shades. The new dye is to be used in dyeing and calico printing.
While the direct condensation product of p-aminosalicylic acid with chloroanil dyes the chromed fibers in brown, less interesting shades, the new dye gives very real, bluish violet dyes on chrome-stained fibers.
Example 20 g of the condensation product of p-aminosalicylic acid and chloranil are stirred into 200 g of concentrated 98% sulfuric acid. The solution is heated to 100 to 105 ° C. for three to four hours. The solution color, initially blue-violet, gradually becomes pure blue. A sample, diluted with water, should give a precipitate of purple flakes.
This water is filtered off, gives a red-violet solution with a sodium carbonate solution, and a pure blue solution with an excess of it.
The reaction product is allowed to cool and is then poured into ice water. To isolate the dye, the precipitate obtained in this way is filtered off, pressed, then mixed with water again - the last amounts of acid are neutralized, here it is filtered again, pressed and dried.
The new dye dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a purely blue color, in dilute soda solution with fuchsin red, and in excess with a greenish blue color. When diluted with water, its solution in sulfuric acid turns into a violet precipitate. The dye stains the chrome-stained fiber in bluish purple tones.
